In my current PBEM I have come across a very odd behaviour by training fighters.

My opponent usually puts a lot of fighter groups on training at an airbase that I am trying to attack: if I send a sweep to clear that base, my planes are never engaged by training fighters and there is no combat at all, but if I send a bombing strike I usually see the message "group xxx caught in training" and the training fighters react to my raid and, since CAP has a big advantage over escorts, they usually cause a lot of losses.

At first I kept sending bombing stikes thinking that there was a random chance that training figheters would not react to my raid but now I see that they always catch my raid in air and, due to the fact that they are probably at 100% training, there is no plane on the ground to kill, even if the raid goes through

My question is if this behaviour is WAD and, if yes, what is the best way to deal with.

Thanks a lot

Not sure, but it's likely WAD.  The best way I can think of to deal with it is to damage the airfield more than 50 + 5x AF level.  That will prevent him from flying CAP, and should prevent him from flying training.  Then you can destroy the planes on the ground.  If they still fly training and intercept you with the damage over the CAP limit, it could be a bug that michaelm might be able to address in the next beta version.

Training missions most assuredly do not always get caught up in battle. Much depends on the altitude you send in your air strikes and the amount of warning time.

In your case:

1. Try juggling the approach altitude to be significantly different from the altitude at which the enemy fighters train at.

2. Send in bombers with a faster cruise speed to cut down on warning time.

3. Take off from closer airfields, again to reduce warning/approach time.

4. Switch over completely to night bombing, those enemy fighters will be on the ground.

5. Concentrate on bombing the airfield. Eventually sufficient damage to runways and service fields can accumulate to the point of shutting down enemy flying operations.

6. If the enemy airfield is on the coast, send in a naval bombardment task force.

7. For a while send in only unescorted fighters, figther bombers to bomb the airfield. If confronted by the enemy training fighters, your planes will drop their ordnance and tangle with the enemy.

Training flights, under the right circumstances, can join in air combat. Thus it is WAD. However as you can see there are several courses of action open to you.

My experience is that training flights don't perform well when they react.

In particular in the late war they will almost always 'kami' into a bomber.  That would be fine if they took the bomber down, but it appears they also miss or hit each other a lot.  Had several outcomes losing +18 fighters in kami mode and only getting 2 - 3 4E bombers.

Thanks Alfred, very efficient as usual.

Curses. I am the opponent in question and was well aware Alex hadn't tried anything that Alfred suggested.

My cunning plan is thwarted
