AFV = Armored Fighting Vehicle.

Only Daito Shoto requires a shock attack. I figure the guys will have time to build condos in the jungle at Naha and Nago (Milo? Are you reading this?).

Going from memory, Naha stacking limit is 50,000 and Nago is 35,000 (might be 30,000). The defenders are pretty close. The attackers will exceed, and do so to excess.

With the fortification levels that I figure are at those bases, it would be a whole lot longer than that to disable 50% of the squads by bombardment. It's going to be bloody. Naha has 2,873 AV going ashore, Nago 949 AV, and Daito Shoto 1,834 AV.

But my little electrons have spirit. They are the badasses of the lepton world.

This is the month-old SigInt filter I ran for Okinawa operation targets. I have not run a new one. Once again the date is the most recent SigInt for that unit.

An enemy unit east of Lang Son is heading SW to get behind our troops that have advanced over the Chinese border. A para Rgt from Haiphong will block them.

Yamato has been revealed as "falsely reported sunk" which means that she is at Singapore. The repair yard there has only been repaired to 18,000 tons capacity but I think even the full 51,000 tons would be too small to fit Yamato. So, whatever shape she is in she is certainly vulnerable.

The assault gun unit just caught up and did not participate, but they will tomorrow if the enemy units are still present.

Our B-29 groups did not fly against Naha with heavy rains at the target. Now Naha scouts with 55F, 52B, 33A; Nago 45F, 25B, 28A; Amami Oshima 55F; and Daito Shoto 5F. It's going to be a hot time on the ground and at sea, why not in the air?!

Our convoys have been partially spotted and elicited comments from Email Tokyo. We are responding with disinformation. Considering the number of TFs spotted and their position and heading, it probably looks like the target is Daito Shoto. With 15 hexes to go to Naha, the convoys will move 5 hexes for the next two days and 4 hexes the following day to arrive at the final marker 1 hex out. 5 hexes per day will have the fortunate coincidence of putting all the Nago transports (and other ships) 1 hex out from Daito Shoto. Maybe two of our bombardment groups will get a shot at aircraft on the ground at night at Naha and Nago.

Indochina.

Malay Peninsula & Sumatra. Patani and Kota Bharu will be bypassed by the main forces and left for smaller units to tackle, as will Temuloh and Kuantan.

Disinformation mentioned above. I am sure this will work because it has been tested and used successfully by politicians for centuries.

Seems like there will be a lot of violence soon. Excellent :P

I'm really curious to see how much resistance he can put up. I think it must be obvious you're going for more than one island, especially with all those task forces.

I think it will be once he sees them all, but so far way less than half are seen. Not sure if the fleet's CAP will keep all from being seen until they get closer. I'll take any confusion at DAW HQ I can get!

Ah, just another day in 1944. Almost! Got two out of three.

Pakhoi under siege, troops pulling back in the Chinese Mtns routed, and huge invasion forces heading to invade what will invariably be the weakest defended Japanese positions....but in this case not!

Pretty exciting.

An ancient Chinese curse: "May you live in interesting times!"

Very interesting how things are going. You might want to have some of your big bombers work at night. Now you know why Iwo Jima was so important for the bombing campaign against the home islands.

Have you thought of breaking up Chinese divisions to work behind the lines to cut supply? The divisions with just a few squads would work fine for this, just keep one unit back to rebuild the division until you get the free rebuilds. If nothing else it would give the enemy something else to worry about. I know that you could just air transport a few squads to do the same thing, but that could be gamey.

Well, another one is a bit weak yet. I have routed a few IJA units in the mountains, but not much so far and the stack (the other two I am thinking of were single units) is staying put on a road.

Yes, they will have to. But I have decided, personally - not a house rule, to withhold night bombing with the B-29s until January 1, 1945. So until then I will suffer with the daytime-only losses.

We are long past that stage. Did what I could of that early in the game but the Devious Admiral Wa is well aware of that tactic and actively countered it. Eventually all the cats were herded. As far as transporting by air: only if I owned an airbase, because the Chinese Army has no para drop capable units.

Movement southward continues on Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula. Possibly tomorrow will see a cross-river attack on a zombie campground in Burma.

Zombies north of Saigon mark another day as the forces of their doom gather.

Allied units are heading into Soerabaja but will wait for all earmarked forces to arrive before reducing the defenses.

We harvested a whole bunch of the best pilots from the USA 4EB operating against Java (for assignment to the B-29 groups), so ground strikes will be less productive there for a while.

Another 22x B-29-1 lost for negligible damage to Naha. Tomorrow our fleet carriers will be close enough to provide escort so the action will change character. The number of Imperial fighters in the Philippines is down dramatically, more evidence of reinforcing the Okinawa area.

Indochina.

Okinawa operations. The B-29 groups will keep their Naha airfield strike orders until it is shut down.

I have my seat booked for the action here, just settling down to wait.

Okinawa fleet cruising at 6-7 hexes p/day?

It was 6/day for the first 2 days, then 5/day last turn. It will be 5/day for the turn just sent, then 4/day for the Naha force to arrive at 1 hex from target. The Nago convoys will have to jog so they might move differently on D-1.

I was trying to find when the fleet was discovered IRL. I'm guessing the same day. Hard to replicate, but there is something to be said for brute force.

In my opinion .. AFB 101 .. apply the needed judicious firepower at the IJ's most vulnerable spots .. Hey This AAR shows
an AFB can take Truk if you are willing to apply enough force (and take enough losses ! )

I think the advantage against Atolls is you can figure out exactly what it takes and what it will cost and apply the force needed ..
If it does not work out there is always more coming as long as you keep within the 2:1 VP ratio ..because not only
does the AFB have to win .. but do it under the constraints of the victory conditions ..

Witpqs has shown us he understands this fine line very well ...

1944 October 14

The Empire captured:

The Allies captured:
Sinabang

There were Imperial amphibious or airborne operations at:

There were Allied amphibious or airborne operations at:

Imperial Naval Bombardments

Allied Naval Bombardments:

Our subs continue to tangle with ASW forces while supporting the Okinawa operation.

There were no air strikes against shipping pulling into Pakhoi. No ships unloaded but all made it to port and should unload mostly or fully during the night. Defensive mine fields are in place. The airfield is size 1 + 31%. With support troops and one amphibious Tk Bn unloading tonight, the divisions will move out. The two Australian divisions are heading for Kwangchowan. The two US Army divisions are heading two hexes straight north (NE then NW) to block the road from Lang Son. It's a 4 day march at full speed without harassment from the air (correction: it's an 8 day march at full speed), which they are sure to endure after they leave the Pakhoi base hex. See the notes below about the Lang Son assault for details on the possible encirclement of Imperials there. If the attack day after tomorrow does push the enemy out of Lang Son then these two divisions might be able to attack them in the open as they withdraw to Nanning.

With one mile to go tomorrow is certain to see the river-crossing attack into the zombie enclave in Burma. Moves down Sumatra and down Malay are crisp. Looks like 2 more days for our host to arrive at Singora; maybe 1 day for the regiment to arrive at Tanjoengbalai; less than a week for the division to arrive at Sibolga. 12 enemy fighters are found at Kuantan so a P-38 group out of Soc Trang will sweep there tomorrow.

Coming soon to a theater near you "Last Days of the Zombies!"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ground combat at 61,65 (near Pakse)

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 6378 troops, 114 guns, 36 vehicles, Assault Value = 356

Defending force 2092 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 38

Japanese ground losses:
26 casualties reported
Squads: 1 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Assaulting units:
754th Tank Battalion
2/11th Armoured Car Regiment
11th Airborne/A Division
11th PAVO Regiment
11th Airborne/B Division
21st Indian Mountain Gun Regiment

Defending units:
17th Ind.Mixed Brigade

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All zombie eradication units will be in place tomorrow. 23rd LRP Bde needs about 3 days to take up a blocking position SE of Long Son. The additional assault forces should arrive at Lang Son tomorrow and will attack the day after. If that attack does not dislodge the Imperial horde, then our plan to cut off their line of retreat will go into effect. 88th Chinese Div needs more 5 days (if not impeded by air strikes) to take up a position in the jungle NE of Long Son. Two USA divisions leaving Pakhoi will block the road, to be joined by armor sea lifted from Haiphong.

Movement of forces on and to Java continues. Expedition is being dispatched to Mataram; despite partial preparation minimal resistance from the abandoned troops there expected.

The escort of one of our CA bombardment TFs (tasked as Surface Combat until a bombardment run is ordered) roughed up that Imperial sub just SE of Daito Shoto throughout the day. But the sub got the last laugh, torpedoing and sinking a destroyer.

The B-29 crews went in with no escort from their carrier-borne little friends. 26 lost. Naha has only 7 fighters seen but has 28 bombers and 13 auxiliary a/c. Nago has 50F, 26B, 12A. The B-29 groups will switch targets to Nago. The B-29 pilots have a new motto "We don't need no stinking airplanes!".

I don't know how this happened except that I obviously missed it, but one TF for Naha was left behind not last turn but the turn before! It is composed of 12 knot AK plus ASW escorts and gunfire support and has a nominal speed of 3 hexes per phase. They can make 6 or maybe 7 hexes per day as no refueling will be required. There is no way they will make D-Day and probably on D+1 will land their passengers of two USMC tank battalions and one USMC amphibious tank battalion. If I had seen them last turn they probably could have caught up with the fleet considering the reduced speed of advance.

BB Wisconsin and CL Kalao are leaving Pearl Harbor for Guam.

Indochina.
