More merchants attempting to escape by moving north and then turning around to skirt the coast of the Soviet Far East.

Our subs are conducting secret activities.

The CVE operating off Hakodate had a peaceful night - no air raids! Another mine field laid to the west, our DMS are clearing them. Those IJ merchant convoys appear to be hiding in the Sea of Okhotsk rather than trying to make for Japan.

Most of our B-29 on Formosa are ready to go, but the weather is again forecast rain. Against Shanghai the B-24, et al make a piddling few Light Industry hits, chipping away at that supply base.

First assault at Nanking.

Despite being "surrounded" for several days in a row, Yangtze SNLF soldiers on. No fortification breach at Nanking, but the casualty ratio was very good and will change things quickly. The troops rest tomorrow.

We have finally drained the pool of Chinese Inf Sqd 43. Chinese Inf Sqd 45 stands at 356, with almost all units so equipped set to not take replacements. I'm letting the pool build up higher so that we can get (almost) all units upgraded more quickly. Chengtu is now only slightly over crowded but has plenty of supply for an attack tomorrow. Some countryside hexes are over crowded due to transiting units but that will quickly abate.

Allied Naval Bombardments:
Allied Ships Bombarding Cebu

Our subs are conducting secret activities.

The mines west of Hakodate have been cleared. Again no air strikes against our ships at Hakodate. The airfield there has now built to size 9, allowing us to activate additional night fighter groups there. The next Imperial night strikes there will find well over 100 night fighters on duty plus some ranging from other bases.

Hakodate will also serve as a fighter base to sweep Tokyo both night and day to pave the way for B-29 strikes both night and day. At Sapporo there are 101x night variant B-29 (B-29B) and 105 day types. At Taihoku are 255 day types. All can reach Tokyo within normal range, meaning a full payload of 36x 500 lb bombs for the night type and 20x 500 lb bombs for the day type. When the weather is predicted good, we will hit Tokyo with night/day firebombing strikes. I figure on a nighttime altitude of 10,000 ft and a daytime altitude of 13,000 ft. Sweeps will be handled by 7x P-47 groups and 4x P-51 groups. Others can be transfered from the Ryukus (Okinawa area) as needed.

All units preparing for the Kochi invasion are over 70%.

Progress in China.

Yup, Hankow has 2 1/2 times as many troops in heavier terrain! Still, the fortifications there were reduced on that 1 to 8 attack. This time a lot of AV is added. I did hold back (Reserve-NoPursuit) two Bde that sustained a high percentage of disabled squads and needed time to recover disruption. Maybe going forward I'll use them as artillery until they recover most squads.

On the Chungking plain there are still some countryside hexes over stacked, but when assigned movement is done we'll sort them out. One of the biggest drawbacks with the released units is that Morale and Experience is at minimum for the country (I think that's 40 and 40). So it's great to have them but I will have to watch carefully which units I am putting on garrison versus which units are moving on to continue the advance.

At Hankow we are switching to airfield bombing to destroy supply while our troops recover some. We are also moving out the two units that were in Reserve plus another that was beat up today so they can recover more quickly in a friendly base. At Nanking our infantry has disruption in the teens but we will continue the attack tomorrow on the theory that doing so will be much worse for the defenders, who seem very close to cracking. Our forces at Chengtu must rest.

Cagayan almost cleared.

Rest tomorrow due to elevated disruption.

Shanghai is showing 20 Light Industry now, which I suppose means 18 since it never goes below 2. Toyohara still show 5. Rain forecast again for tomorrow so sweeps and strategic bombing of Tokyo will wait.

With 10 of 12 units wiped out I can't see there being 20,000 troops left at Nanking. Looks like 71st Inf. Bde. and China Expeditionary Army (minus all the vehicles).

I've come to suspect that often the Recon tally of troops is more or less a day behind. Or it could just be the total number seen, not the 'effective' number of troops that gets shown in the combat report.

At any rate, comparing the two lists gives these remaining.
3rd RGC Capital Division
71st Infantry Brigade
5th RGC Division
China Expeditionary Army

It's possible that one or two of those had their destruction reported in the "surrounded" message.
