I've been working on the turn. Nothing momentous happened, but I need more time to create a mess of convoys and send them to pick up units for the Kochi invasion. Just going through and locating all the units involved for the upcoming invasions has taken some time and I'm going to finish the rest of the turn in small bites.

Here are the targets and units assigned, in order of execution. The two small invasions listed will come with or just after the prior listed larger invasion. I have not removed some assigned units that will not be making the assault landings, like Command HQ, etc.

This is going to be fun.

What are your engineering amphibious brigades up to?

I like the all-para invasion of Saishu To (i.e. Jeju-do). You probably have experienced an amphib invasion getting shredded by the CD guns there. EDIT: I certainly have.

Cheers,
CC

Oh - I've assigned the paras but was planning to land them to lighten the casualties. But maybe casualties would be lighter in an air drop??

Do you have an estimation what these forces will encounter at each location?

Also looking forward to it...
...though since you are collecting the forces at the moment and the game pace is rather slow -> it'll be a christmas present more likely.

EAB = Engineer Aviation Battalion. They have no special amphibious qualities.

I think Rafid is pointing out that I need to assign some more Shore Party equipped units to some of the landings. He's right!

.. and Combat Engineer Battalions as well?

A glance through the list did not seem to suggest any are embedded in the landings...

I presume despite the shaky state of the Empire currently ~ Japan has been building fortifications in many likely landings spots since the landings at Okinawa.

You may of course be able to reduce them without ...but ... saving time and electron lives so to speak.

Ah, yes! I plan to mostly rely on the now substantial numbers of embedded combat engineers in the Allied divisions. Some of the dedicated combat engineer units are not allocated, but a number are doing things in China. They will be freed up in coming weeks as more and more Chinese Army units make the rail head at Tuyun and catch up to the front and near the front for garrison duties. Plus of course, further offensive actions, such as liberating Shanghai.

Engineering amphibious brigades (or amphibian brigades?) are the ones with 200 naval support. You usually get four of them by September 1944. They are great for massive invasions as they help unload stuff quickly. Possibly your scenario doesn't have them. EDIT: Regardless, having naval support and/or shore parties (in DBB scenarios) in your invasions will help a lot.

Regarding the invasion of Saishu To, it might be good to fire up a Downfall scenario to see what works. In Downfall, the garrison is light on infantry if I'm not mistaken, and since mines and CDs are present in strength, an airborne invasion may be the least costly way to do it (provided he hasn't reinforced with infantry).

Cheers,
CC

I haven't been doing amphib ops in late 1944 in many years, so either I forgot about those brigades or my scenario never had them. The Marianas scenario has units like "Amphibious Trucks" and some others that are all naval support but not brigade sized ones.
Thanks for pointing them out - always good to (re)learn something about the OOB!

Thanks. Generally the units with large naval support I have working at offload facilities and repair facilities. I probably do have the units (or variants of them) that you mention. I'll have to look, but I likely won't use them in an assault landing.

Interesting about Saishu To. I probably will make it an air drop. With the game date plus the cessation of an airlift into China I certainly have a sky full of transport planes available.

I think they are SWPac units.

BBFanboy: Once again I'm commenting from work, but it could be the DBB-based scenarios don't have those brigades in brigade format, but rather their components (boat squadrons and the like).

Cheers,
CC

64th JNAF AF Unit Wiped Out at Zamboanga by attrition!!!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One more unit to go. And in about 3 days we resume attacking on Luzon. I suspect it will be less than a month before the entire Philippines is secured.

China west.

Home Islands west. The invasion convoys for Kochi are all created and moving to pick up the assigned units. Two units are already loading but perhaps that was not wise as some will not load for a few days yet. Most units are in the Marianas, two on Amami Oshima, and a few at Taihoku.

2,533 AV presently at Hangchow. The reduction of fortifications to 2 makes the defenders more vulnerable to air strikes and naval bombardments. Of course more than 800 disabled squads will take a bit to recover. We have some units which are nearly recovered after moving out to friendly bases that will boost AV by a small degree when they return. We will also have a number or the tank units that have ranged across the northern plains back for the next assault.

We attack Tsingtao tomorrow. Both sides have agreed the breweries are off limits.

Zamboagna is secured.

And with that, all of Mindanao is secured! We should be able to order the first attack at Lingayen tomorrow. A fixing force at Cabanatuan, facing almost 8,000 defenders, will then await help from Lingayen before clearing out that location.

China west.
