Is the problem that you have to clear the enemy out of the Clark hex before you can move through that side? Effectively, they are a roadblock?

That's right. Look at some of the above maps and you will see some red hex sides, some green hex sides, and some that are green on one side and red on the other side (this one happens less often so you might have to hunt around to see examples). The way it works is that each hex has it's own 6 hex sides. When you move from one hex to another you are crossing, First) the hex side of the hex you are leaving, Second) the hex side of the hex you are entering.

The rule is that to *leave* a hex, you must own the hex side of the hex you are leaving.

Since the hex side of the Clark hex which faces Manila is owned by Japan, no Allied unit can leave the Clark hex by that hex side.

You only flip ownership of a hex's hex side when you *enter* the hex across that hex side.

Let Clark use up as much of the supply from Manila that can reach it. It only makes Manila easier to capture.

Somehow, I was able to move a unit out of Bataan after a Japanese unit walked in. I think that is was a turn or two after the Japanese unit arrived at Bataan but it might have been the same turn. I know that the unit was already moving before the Japanese moved in.

Anyway, I was then able to re-enter Bataan, cutting off a Japanese division. Then, I was able to cut the Japanese units in Manila from supplies from the North. Later, another Japanese unit invaded in Southern Luzon and eventually marched into Manila from the south. I had a weak armored battalion in the South which was able to cut the Japanese in Manila completely from receiving any supplies.

When two opposing units enter an empty hex on the same turn, neither side owns any of the hex sides. I've seen that case a number of times, but I have not yet had occasion to see what you described. I imagine that they both crossed the adjoining hex sides on the same turn, and the game said that neither side had ownership. But when you moved a unit back across the hex boundary you got ownership and trapped them. Good going!

Home Islands west. A number of night air attacks on our fleet again, and no night fighter interceptions. I chalk that up to a lack of radars operating at the base when the turn started. That should change tonight. The pursuers have now caught up to the ex-Kochi defenders and will attack tomorrow. Just across the straits at Fusan, recon has been showing lots of ships including many DD. Those are probably E, but just the same the B-29 groups from Formosa made a port strike.

No safe harbor anywhere anymore for the Japs. Must be incredibly difficult for them at this stage.

Will there be anything left for the Russians to do when they come in?

Re: Russians .. Manchuria if our AAR author so allows it or even bothers with it. I assume the Russian are now at "best" a distraction ?

Your thoughts Ser WITPQS ?

--

Not mentioned here before but also now in my mind is of course the Bomb.

I am certain you intend to pursue VJ day by the occupation of Tokyo; or something approximating this.

You and your honorable opponent may have already agreed upon date i.e. August 14 1945 (surrender) or September 2 1945 (the signing). Perhaps I missed that.

However the mechanics of the Bomb have only been written about in one AAR that I have ever read (as I recall).

The manual outline the mechanics but it is variable.. given your Date / VP point status / Number of bases I wonder if you have any notifications

I doubt that the Chinese Army which invades Manchuria will be strong enough to bring the Imperial garrison below Soviet Activation level before the Soviets activate due to game date. At that point they will become an overwhelming distraction on land, but I see it as unlikely they will get to take part in a Home Islands invasion.

We have not set a date. I probably will not use the A-Bomb, but who knows at this point.

Again tomorrow to remove the rear guard. The B-29B groups on Hokkaido did not fly against Osaka/Kyoto last night, possibly due to weather.

Air losses. Note to self: Do not sweep at 10,000 ft against the enemy's best planes flown by their best pilots flying at higher altitude. The P-51D based at Hakodate flew at escort height over Kobe and ran into a large CAP from Osaka/Kyoto. Heads are gonna roll.

Interesting to see a supply problem on a main Home Island. This bunch will now move west against Matsuyama. Kochi sports a size 4 airfield complex, now with 60 night fighters and 75 fighters. 138,000 supply, lots of engineers in place, but the base is still over stacked (1 almost 140%) until the two divisions and one tank unit move out to assault Takamatsu. They won't out until the units now moving on Matsuyama are ready to clear the countryside hex they are in, because they are much more over stacked there.
