Home Islands west. Except for the USA 38th ID, tardy as mentioned before, all troops are now ashore at Kumamoto and are in fantastic shape. There have been casualties among the ships and will be more but the news is decidedly positive. The 38th loaded with a full complement of supplies and is already at sea one hex from Taihoku. They should begin unloading at Kumamoto on the third day from now. Meanwhile the forces already there will attack tomorrow. Today saw meaningful attrition of the defenders every time the stuck their heads up. The IJ bombardment resulted in 660 casualties, that after a naval bombardment, gunfire support for both troops and supply landing, and air strikes. Tonight two USN old BB and eight USN fast BB will apply their disruptive effect to the defenses. Farther out, just offshore, a CVE was torpedoed in a night attack, the only ship casualty of the air strikes. quote:
