1944 July 09 The Empire captured: Culion (I probably missed the last time this auto-switched to our side.) The Allies captured: Soc Trang There were Imperial amphibious or airborne operations at: There were Allied amphibious or airborne operations at: Our subs got an SC, an E, an xAK, and a PB. Quiet in China. Good air strikes on the stack withdrawing to Chiang Mai, closer to the end at Rangoon, and the 5th Recon Rgt was blasted to oblivion on the road to Bangkok. quote:

Allied Ships Bombarding Pagan A massive running battle in the South China Sea! Our battleships shot somewhat poorly, at least in comparison to the likely highly experienced Kongos. We lost one and another is in jeopardy. One CVL is in trouble, and we lost CL Nashville. Other ships are in danger, of course. The IJN lost many ships, and both sides lost many aircraft and crews. The first sign of the coming carnage was one of our subs being attacked when trying to get a shot at a heavy cruiser advancing toward our fleet. Daytime also saw the Empire using the confusion so send a tanker convoy east to run our blockade, possibly on the the theory that all of our carriers would be up north. Of course they are still covering troop movements to Cam Ranh Bay, but the Empire lacked search contacts to show that. The tankers did not advance far enough to come within range of carrier borne aircraft, but dive bombers at Jesselton found the range. Our 2x CL TF was on patrol 2 hexes in front of our carriers and, most importantly, was not sighted by the Empire yesterday. They first intercepted 2x DD undoubtedly sent in to disrupt surface combat TFs, and then stood in the way of 2x Kongos and a CA. Next the same enemy ran into the CVL TF and would have torn it to bits, if not for the intervention of our most powerful TF, 2x fast BB, which stormed onto the scene and got their asses kicked. The night and day continued in a swirl of action from there. One of our old BB bombardment TFs saw battle, but they were all ordered to stay put (tonight they will be on patrol). The carrier battles were defined by stamina, with most of the Allied hits coming after numerous attacks wore down the IJN CAP. Bringing in the CVL was critical, as was the intervention - and sacrifice - of the USN BB. Many strikes were split by weather plus separated from fighter escort. Without further introduction: quote:

Raid is overhead -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our stance tonight/tomorrow will be aggressive, with the two groups (1x TF each) on duty in the Cam Ranh Bay SLOC heading west to hit any remaining carriers and withdrawing surface ships. Almost all remaining CA and CL task forces will do the same, with some covering the Soc Trang area. The 3 old BB TF that did not engage will cover the port plus the carriers nearby. Four of the six CV near Soc Trang are out of sorties (22 remaining between the four of them!) and will withdraw to Jesselton in the hope that the size 6 airfield will be size 7 by the time they arrive to replenish their sorties. The other two CV will remain on station although they will have to go soon. The CVL are in decent shape. Everybody is low on or out of torpedoes. The two CV groups mentioned earlier - currently in the CRB SLOC - are well stocked. CVL Langley might make Cam Ranh Bay, absent enemy action. The armour will attack at Quinhon tomorrow, and likely be joined by the infantry the following day. That enemy unit at Bien Hoa seems to have moved back to Saigon, where our troop will cross the river in two days. SE of Saigon our armour and paratroopers have caught up with the IJA Rgt and will attack it even though outgunned, simply to aid the coming battle for Saigon. The 2nd Australian Division, which captured Soc Trang, is moving out at full speed for Phnom Penh. The other units have all begun unloading at Soc Trang but much depends on IJN action tonight. A few Light Industry hits at Soerabaja today. Recon shows 7 remaining, so some B-24 are switching to hit the Repair Shipyard. Here is a snippet of a nighttime combat, but the real story is the number of enemy sightings on the map to the left!
