I know that the next time I find a rare source I can not colonize, I will look desperately for anything remotely colonizable that could bring the spot into my SOI.

No need. Now you just have to declare war on whoever owns it and away you go.

There are few political problems in DW that can not be solved with a successful war. Conquering a rare source is easy if you are more powerful.

But if you get hold of it inside your SOI noone else can colonize on top of your mine, or plant their own mine if an accident happens and you lose your mining base. It is a whole new level of protection of a mine. Of course, they can colonize on top if at war, but you are not going to let them do that, are you?

My rare resources are usually guarded by a LSP and several defense bases with a fleet assigned as well if I can colonize the planet. If I can't colonize, then it still gets a big fleet. Protecting those rare resources is why my space navy exists.

If I can't colonize I put a couple of defensive bases around (and try to keep the mining base outside the area weapon range). And I may park a smallish destroyer fleet.

But this will not stop a colonizer if you don't pay attention. But being in your SOI will stop that scenario.

Last night I had 4 defensive bases, a medium space port, and a powerful fleet guarding my rare resource in war. But the buggers got troops on the ground, and who knows why the fleet was not at home?

Luckily their troops died easily on the ground.

Not sure if anyone, and definitely not myself, is backing NO borders. I think the idea is great, needed to be done, yada, yada. But... I think they still need time and some work to make them function to best effect in Distant Worlds.

Yes you are right. For me it is more interesting to have to take out the (more) established colony of the computer which is generating the sphere of influence rather than just grabbing the juicy colonisable world straight up. In fact it is a rule I make for myself.

Isn't taking the main colony from an empire instead a border space region through colony more of an evil and overwheling act? Therefore I am out of knowledge why to criticize the "border useless in war" patch. I like it.

Nedrear I didn't say 'main'. The point is that I need a proper invasion fleet complete with enough ships to take down the defensive bases and sufficient troops to take the world. To grab a mined/vacant world all I need is to be able to hold off whatever response fleet the computer throws at me. That is I need a much lesser force. As I pointed out I can make this rule for myself so it was not a criticism of the patch.
