Well, I'm not really concerned by the CV ammo (but I will check it).  In the 10,000 tasks to do each turn, I figure that the carriers and escorts barely fired their AA guns (cuz hardly any ij planes got through to attack) , so their ammo should be good, so it's one less thing to worry about "this turn".

But then, that's just dumb.  They're carriers after all!  They should be checked each turn, and that I will do.

I';ve been keeping a pretty good eye on my fast raider fleets.  These guys, well it seems like they spend one day in the combat zone and are out of main gun ammo (due to surface action) and anti-air ammo (aircraft attacks) :)  I'm replenishing the small craft out of Okinawa and Iwo (AD's positioned appropriately - in fact I think I should move one up to fukue-Jima :) ) and sending anything with 10 or more damage to Guam/Manila.

More to come later.... quick notes: The CV Antietem took another torp and its survival will be a toss of the die. My "spread out invasion fleets" CAP held up again, but it's near the cracking point. Objective secured, Fukue-Jima is mine... time for the fleets to depart and my airforce to regain full strength.

The second round of island invasion is on the way, covered by more CVEs I have in the back, and other ships that didn't partake of the initial invasion. Estimated d-day is 5-7 days.

Usually when naval search planes report attacking something and claim a hit, there really is a vessel at that hex and the size reported is usually right even if the specific class of vessel is a incorrect. The hits may or may not be real - the naval search skill has a lot to do with accuracy or the reports.
If they did get hits and sinkings you will not see them in the same day report. They will show up in the Op Report when the enemy admits the loss which could be days, weeks or even months later.

The numerous small craft reported sunk at the bottom of your Sept. 9 Op Report were not the ones attacked by naval search. They should appear in the Combat Report and likely were observed to sink during combat. Any that were damaged and sank later in the day but after your forces left the scene will not be reported sunk until a day or more later when your intel hears something.

This was a “slow” turn – the B29’s and long range fighters rested for the most part. I rushed the turn, and in my haste forgot to change settings on all my planes in the PI. Oh well, it happens, too many toys.

Initial plans for this turn will see my carriers departing from the area, as I now have the base and airfield. As I stand up on a mountain top like Liam Neeson in Clash of the Titans, I scream, “Release the Transports”!!!! and will use my C46 Commando’s to xport some units to Fukue-jima.

I’ll probably do a quick re-org of my lba, as the last Japanese holdouts in the PI banzai-ed and were all wiped out.

I think for today’s aar, I’ll just post the CR and my thoughts on it. I don’t really have the time today to filter it all out.

27 Zero’s to do that. Dang. I’ve noticed that uncapped 1CL/2-4DD fleets are a lot more vulnerable to kami’s than tf’s only containing DD’s, as you’ll see in the next few attacks. Also, I’ve noticed that nothing Cruft has thrown my way surface-wise has defeated a 3-4DD fleet of mine. I’m going to change my Fast Raider fleet composition to just DD’s. No CL’s or CA’s.

Orders sent... I stood down the B29's, stood down and reorganized most of the airforce in the PI. Used a couple of groups of Iwo Jima P47's to sweep Japan. Gave a deliberate attack to Amani Oshima - I hope this base falls quickly. I have the Daito Shoto division of troops on the way to Amani, just in case (either way, it'll make a good jumping off point to the next invasion)

Here's the strat map for 9/10/45. All I can say is, when you have a target-rich environment, it's hard for the enemy to focus on 1 task force.

Now, the question is, do I continue moving towards the islands northeast of Fukue-Jima, do I wrap up a couple more islands to the South, do I grab Moppo (can be built to lvl 9 port) or do I go for a massive punch right on Kyushu right away? I think a couple days of recon should let me know what I need to know as that'll be about the right time for his troops to be reorganized from starting positions.

Congrats on your many successes in that long post [Sept 9/45 I think]. You have done a good job of composing and distributing the many TFs to cause maximum confusion and destruction of his forces.

Re: Moppo, I'm not really sure it is worthwhile to take it and build to a level 9 port. He can rail in a lot of LCUs from China/Manchukwo/SE Asia and tie down a lot of troops you will need for Japan. You have good bases with shipyards on Okinawa that can handle up to cruiser size. If you want bigger shipyards for CV/BB repairs consider Shanghai, if it is lightly held. It produces some supply and is already a high level port. Only dowside is the continent full of IJA troops adjacent to it! Level 7 forts should keep them out.
Less risky is to stick to islands - hard for him to bring in reinforcements after all his losses. Saishu To would pretty much seal the Yellow Sea and put your bombers in range of lots of industry.
If you hold Iwo Jima/Haha Jima/Chichi Jima in the Bonins, you might want to look at those four small islands running south from Shimizu. Would be tough to get the first invasion in there but once you get fighters operating there your bombers can be escorted almost anywhere in Japan.
Just some possibilities for your consideration - you will have a much better feel for what is do-able with the forces you have and the opposition he can put up. Good luck!

Good points BB.  What I was liking about Moppo is that it's not actually conected to a rail line - you'd have to rail to Gunzan or that base 2 hexes to the east and march.  I was thinking I could put about 1k AV in Moppo just to defend the base... and should he counter attack in force he'll have to march across open terrain to get to Moppo, and that should be long enough for whatever LBA I have around to smash the counterattacking forces.  The other thought I had was that should he decide to counterattack, that's a lot less AV he'll have to send to Japan proper.

I initially wanted to grab the base to the south of Shanghai and the base to the North of SHanghai (you can invade that base north of Shanghai from sea - it has a nice port, there's another base to the NW of it, and if I had both of those bases, I could put defensive forces in place and he'd have to do a cross-river assault to attack them).

I'm going to grab the Bonin's - just haven't done so yet (but it's on the next wave).  Not sure about those isles to the S of Tokyo - they look to be very hard to build up, and I figure I'll be on Japan's Homeland by the time I get around to making those bases useful.  Plus, he's been mining them pretty hard - as noticed by the Fast Raider fleets I have patrolling the Isles.

Also, I figure that I have another month and 20 days before I land on Japan (target date for invasion Japan is the 2 month mark - need to push hard and fast in this game - cuz all those bases in Japan are the one's worth the money - and this game starts with about a 50k point disparity in Japans favor... so that gives me 10 months to take as much of Japan as I can).  This time frame gives me one more big non-HomeIslands push with major carrier support.... (small snatch-and-grabs not included)... then a couple of weeks to rest, repair, and re-org my fleets properly for a long term, up-close, invasion support... needing ake's ae's ao's, ad's etc. etc. etc. not to mention the actual invasion forces.

Have you reconned Tsushima? You don't want to go there with an invasion as the fort is pretty big as far as CD. However, if it is not reinforced the paras should be able to take it. That will pretty much seal off mainland Asia from Japan

Good thought Vettim, haven't thought of that one. Not used to having an entire Airborne Division on hand :) I'll check it's dl level as soon as I get the turn back (I have the CR now, turn probably in a couple days). I figure an airborne invasion would be possibly in about 3 weeks, best in 5. This could be a good use of this asset - target Tsushima with an airborne div about 1-2 weeks before the big strike on mainland Japan, get Cruft thinking northern Kyushu or Korea, then hit 'em somewhere else.

I saw this in my ops report from the 9/10/45 turn... it's one I haven't seen before:

SS Tench detects surfaced submarine at 101, 58 but it immediately dives

Edit, just noticed this in my ops report... looks like Cruft is reinforcing Tsushima.

Tsushima expands airfield to size 2

9/11/45 Combat Replay and Turn received... and lets see how the Antietam fares, after playing the role of torpedo magnet. DD's and DE's awaiting orders into Fast Raider task forces have been diverted to emergency ASW roles for the next two days.

2 days to safety... time to send forward a couple ARs to Amami Oshima to patch her up pending an eventual departure to Pearl's docks. If she can make it to base, I think I can save her - Amami Oshima is now mine and I will air transport a couple of 90 Av Support Base Forces to her juicy lvl 3 Airfield this turn.

Tomorrow, 48 Corsairs and 36 Hellcats fly into base to provide cap to support troop tf's. SeaBee's are on the way to turn this into a lvl 6 af as fast as possible. This is a good base because of the 2E bomber coverage over Japan... as can be witnessed by this range 10 sketch,

From the start of the game, I've been moving CV's (with enough AO replenishment to remain on patrol a long time) towards the Kuriles in effort to cut off any possible chance the KB could get 'behind my lines' in the only way it could, through the North Pac.

I detailed 6 CV, 6 CVL, and 7 CVE to perform this task. I've been keeping 4CV and 4 CVL forward while a 2CV 2CVL tf runs back a little for some gasoline. In this instance, it's the Enterprise and Saratoga that just refueled and are coming back to the front line.

Cruft will either suicide his remaining carriers on my fleet - or pull them back and sweat them being in B29 port attack destruction range. My orders are simple, all CV's and CVL's move N/NE (or in the Ent and Sara's case, NW) to cover the 'breakout' move. The CVE's remain put and cover the southern approach at a distance his CV's can't reach without going through my CV's. MY CVE's will remain far enough back that a 'wraparound' move going behind Hokkaido and through the Ominata straights is just too much travel to get there in time.

If your CVs/CVLs are protecting the CVEs, what role do you have for them? Are they there for ASW? To catch small surface raiders like DDs? To add CAP to the CV fleet?

I believe that Japan has 5-6 CV’s in this scenario – and I wanted to have 2x as many planes for my CV Hunter Killer forces  than the KB has, but didn’t want to use any more of my heavy carriers for the task.  Should the KB and my HunterKiller CV groups clash, and should I get all the bad die rolls and my heavies get smooshed, I wanted more CV support to A) Protect the Aleuts and B) act as a deterrent to keep the KB behind Japan.

I figure that a KB vs. HunterKiller clash that turned out bad for me would at the least, butcher the KB’s airgroups.  By having another 250 AC on station in CVE’s , it would keep the KB bottled up should disaster occur to my heavies.

The CVE’s came forward to this hex because over the last couple of turns there have been some thrust and parry between his CV’s and my CV’s – in that he’s trying to tempt me to come closer to Japan and it’s LBA, but I’ve been trying to dodge and strike when given the opportunity, and I wanted more airgroups in the area -  as the KB by itself outnumbers each independent 2CV/2CVL (this is the first time all game that I’ve had more then 2CV and 2CVL in a hex up in the North Pac – so it’s kind of an anomaly).  My CV’s are wayyy to far from a decent allied port to *not* come with overwhelming force.  An equal CV clash between us would probably not turn out as well for me, as for him, as he’s a couple hexes from his ports and I’m a thousand million miles away from Addu.

Also, The CVE’s are going to say put just incase the KB is *bait* to draw my CV’s north in effort to get a couple of Japanese SCTF behind my lines.

My plans for North Pacific are as follows… I call it “keeping Cruft honest”….  I’m going to grab a few of the Kurile islands and begin developing them.  This will allow put search coverage over the rest of the straights that bottle up the KB behind Japan, and give me a couple bases to stage aircraft for search, CAP, 1E, 2E’s.  Who knows I might get a couple isles that can goto level 7 or 8 and base some 4E’s there.

By building up 2,3, or 4 airfields in the Kuriles, I accomplish a few things…. I won’t need to detail any CV’s to perform the “keep my interior safe” mission.  A few bases in the Kuriles give me complete “normal range” fighter coverage over all of Japan.  By “showing” major force around Kyushu while trying to be all sneaky in grabbing a few Kuriles – and making an invasion of Northern Japan a possibility, I force Cruft to keep some forces in Northern Japan, instead of moving everything to Southern Japan and the ‘obvious’ invasion locations.  Also, be taking a couple of the Kuriles, I open the back side of Japan to invasion and force Cruft to consider the possibility of an invasion on the west coast of Japan.

Keeping the CVEs for a mobile reserve - nice!
Re: the Kuriles - there are 9 bases or dot hexes that can be developed. Only the closest island to Hokkaido can have a level 8 AF. There are three that can have level 7 AFs, but Paramushiro Jima [in the full campaign at least] has a nasty fortress. The remainder of the bases can be built to level 6 AFs except Ketoi Jima [lvl 5 max].
I recommend Onnetonkan Jima [east end] and Shimushiri Jima [central Kuriles] for their level 7 potential and because they could mutually support while being spread out enough to cover a lot of search area. If you feel strong enough you could add another base closer to Hokkaido to seal the area. Good luck!

I want to get the bases closest to Hokkaido - as those are the ones that can be built up, and the ones that will provide the shortest range to Northern Japan.  Some recon by a couple of CA reinforced Fast Raider fleets shows these isles empty, for the most part.  I figure that when my CV's retire to Adak to replenish sorties, their last act will be to move up close and perform a quick recon of all the islands, just enough recon to see what, if anything, he's done to reinforce the islands.

I have never started up this scenario but I must say I am very surprised that those islands are so weakly held at the scenario start - a huge open door for the allies. From your progress so far it looks as if Japan has enough handicaps without having to also plug that hole!

I also thought you might have more headaches from Japanese air attacks but it appears that they have significantly fewer aircraft, even fewer modern ones, and less skilled pilots as compared with Scenario 2. I have been reading Greyjoy's "Power of Inexperience" AAR which stalled at the shores of Honshu because there was no way to defend against the hoards of aircraft attacking. I guess I assumed this scenario would be somewhat like that in terms of air battles. If you are confident you can deal with his air forces, taking the islands closest to Hokkaido is definitely the best option.
I will be ....

propably that these ships would've been built in Amami Oshima?
Meaning you captured them in the shipyard.

Right! "Cancelled" means construction was planned or even underway in the early stages. If you happen to capture a base where a ship is close to completion it will say something like "destroyed on the slipway". I think you get more VPs for the latter.
Things get really weird when the IJN gets new ships "completed" and arriving at a base without a shipyard and perhaps even behind your lines! If, for example the AI has a DD reinforcement planned to arrive in Takao, when the appropriate amount of HI points is applied - POOF - there she be! Most of the time these remote appearances are things like SCs and xAKLs that could conceivably be built locally.

Here's the CR for 9/10, I'll try and comment on it later... my turn is almost completed and ready to go back to Cap'n Cruft... in short:

Fukue-Jima and Amami Oshima are mine and the invasion fleets are departed. CV fleets are retiring to rest and replenish. During this time of heavy naval action, I've been reloading for another Heavy Industry attack, and now is the time. My B17 and B24 groups have relocated to Clark and Manila and will attempt to destroy the remaining 100HI at Hong Kong. With the dl at 9/10 and only 20 fighters spotted, I shouldn't be bothered by his airforce. We'll see.

I have a choice with my B29's: Tokyo (Detection level 7/16, 733(2200)HI, 252 Fighters, 454 Bombers, 100 Aux), Osaka (dl 9/12, 2200(0) HI, 150 Fighters, 100 bombers, 30 aux), or, I could send them back to Fusan and clean up whatever survived from before.

Over Fusan/Nagasaki/Tsushima the last couple of turns, my sweeps have encountered Shindens and Me-262's, derp, Ki-201 Karyu's. Obviously, these are his best pilots and he's defending this area hard, so Fusan is out.

Between Tokyo and Osaka is a no brainer. Osaka has three times as much HI, half the fighters, and more detection level than Tokyo. P51Hs from Iwo will sweep in the morning phase. B29s escorted by P47Ns will arrive in the afternoon. (It seems that due to the distances involved, with Iwo being shorter range these planes usually go in in the AM. The mariana's being much farther away, seem to have their air groups arrive in the PM)

One last note on the pending Heavy Industry assaults on Hong Kong and Osaka. For every airgroup detailed to attack, sweep, or escort, I looked through the group's plane data and noted how many aircraft were above 10 fatigue. The numbers ranged between 10 and 20% of total... so I set all groups to rest at 30% (just to have a little safety factor thrown in there) - but fear not - there should be a lot of planes coming in barring bad weather.

Does this mean I get the VP's for them? I thought that this feature (getting VPs for ships not built) was eliminated in a previous patch, due to the Japanese rushing Ceylon in the GC to knock out those two Brit CV's that arrive in 45.

All I know is there are points showing for all those cancelled ships - I assume they get added to your total. When I took Nagasaki in my game I destroyed Yamato* on the slipway and got points for it, but less than the full amount she is worth when completed.

How'd I get Yamato still under construction? Having just got the game and playing my first full campaign, I wanted to find out how things really work - e.g. if a CV gets a "fuel storage explosion" what damage does that actually do, etc. So to treat it as a simulator I played a head-to-head game and I handled both sides, making the Japanese do crazy things just to see what results were. I had both their navy and air force out of the way when I invaded Japan because I didn't want to wait until 1945 to see what was needed there to handle garrison requirements. The good news is that some significant bases like Fukuoka have low garrison requirements but the bad news is that Tokyo requires 1160AV, Osaka around 1020 and Nagoya IIR about 1020. Good thing I had the Russians in the game to hold down those bases.

Handling both sides is not exciting [since there are no surprise attacks] but as a learning tool it was great to get a feel for what goes on. I monitored the results of bombardments, for example, and noted that even when the Combat Report does not show disablements or destroyed squads, troops still suffer an increase in fatigue and disorganization. If you sustain the bombardment over weeks they start to get increasing numbers of disablements and then the destroyed squads figure rises dramatically. Strangely enough, guns are hard to knock out with bombardments and usually only get destroyed after most of the troops and vehicles are gone. Also, marching troops that have been bombarded so that their disorganization and fatigue is 70+ may still show a significant AV but when they attack that gets adjusted to near zero.

I also got a better feel for the survivability of IJN ships. I hit CVL Ryujo with a couple of bombs in the South China Sea and the fires that started were out by next turn [one day turns]. As she headed for Cam Rahn Bay for repairs a sub put two torps in her causing a fuel storage explosion. Next day the fires were out and she was headed for Hong Kong for drydock. Another sub hit her with one torp causing an ammo storage explosion. Next day, the fires were out but she was creeping along at one hex/day because of the flooding and engine damage. System damage was also pretty high so the flooding increased and she foundered two days later just before making it to Hong Kong. The IJN damage repair may not be as good as the Allies but their ships are built pretty tough to start with so they can take a lot of punishment. Another example - BB Hyuga took 5 sub torps in three different attacks before she sank.

I'm really excited to see what happens in Osaka. I put ~20 B29 groups (800-1000 planes) on Heavy Industry attack at Osaka escorted by 150 P47Ns, after its swept by 150 P51H (I hope)

When you assign HI attack do you get some city fires starting because of misses and the like? I think I saw something in one of the other AARs that said fires are the only thing that can permanently eliminate industries. Of course if it is points you are after, you can get more by damaging them multiple times rather than eliminating them early.

Well the turn came back and my B29's didn't fly. Neither did my P47Ns or P51H's (except for 1 group that swept Chiba - 1 hex SE of Tokyo. Interesting - I swear I didn't have any groups set to fly against Chiba this turn)

I had planes set for 6k, 9k, and 13k cap (50%cap/50%rest) on all groups and a CVE took a bomb. I bet this will embolden Cruft to try again, with more bombers. His planes are flying out of Indochina – so I will find and destroy these planes o the ground. This is the only night air attack Cruft did that hit something important

Thus begins the night attacks on Fukue-Jima. All these planes were coming from a direction pointing right at Tokyo. With yesterdays notice of the #’s of ac at Tokyo (500+ a/c), I might have to visit Tokyo at night. I shied away from doing too many night attacks because it can be so devastating, but maybe I’ll have to teach Cruft a lesson on the power of 500 B29’s at 11k on a night airfield attack against Tokyo.

Nothing I can’t handle at Fukue-jima with the engineers I have on base. Cruft is too afraid to fly against this base in daytime. Too bad, as the damage I did to Fukue-jima assaulting it will be repaired in a day or two, and then my cap will be able to fly 100% effectively.

Not sure, I know I checked my P51 groups at Iwo like 5 times and had them set to sweep Osaka. I’m guessing there was bad weather over Osaka (as my B29s didn’t fly against Osaka, not a one of them) and this group and it’s aggressive commander diverted to Chiba (nice of him, that’s where I would have gone) and once again cleared the skies of Japs. I am racking up the kills on my P51 squads, I know that.

Ok, knowing that none of my B29s flew against Osaka – and I find it unlikely that bad weather would keep all 3 of my Mariana’s B29 bases shut down at the same time, and that no planes flew against Osaka from Iwo either – I conclude that Osaka had terrible weather. That’s ok – it gives all my aircraft another days rest, and tomorrow I will either hit Osaka or night bomb Tokyo’s airfield. I’m leaning towards the HI, because the long term effect will be better I think.

Well, I put 55 HI hits on Hong Kong today. One more day of this and HK will be done as a Heavy Industry center (all 120ish HI of it), and I will move on to the next base. Now that I own and am developing 2E bases in range of Japan and don’t have to use my 4E’s for amphibious assault support, I won’t have to pull my strat bombers from their main task as much – and they can focus on shutting down Japans HI.
