No, I think those are 5"/38 in single mounts. I believe that is a Bagley Class DD

No, those are twin 5" mounts. I wish we could see behind that officer to see if the wing mounts are there.

Atlanta's has that row of distinctive round bridge portholes and tons of radar and antenna's. Might be the Atlanta. I believe she was built in Brooklyn (I can see the yard from work). Can't believe they sent these guys into knife fights in the slot, barley looks bigger than a destroyer. Guess you sent what you had

Atlanta I think. Built in Kearny, NJ. Fitted out and commissioned in Brooklyn.

Take a closer look. #3 5inch turret is rotated around so that it looks like a director.

If it's the ATLANTA, then where is the 3rd forward twin turret? I think it more likely a SUMNER class DD.

Probably he's still fuming with rage over Pearl Harbor.

Atlanta was the first USN warship commissioned after the attack.

IMO the most beautiful ship class of the era.

Agreed with AW1Steve here about turret 3... The probable reason for this position; is for barrel cleaning (A good-old pull though).

Yes, and as an added precaution the officer on the left has an ice-detection antenna protruding from his hat.

I think that is where the Royal Navy went wrong in WWII. Their US counterparts took far more interest in milinary military potential....

Only real criticism is that the gentleman on the left should not have his hands in his pockets while walking on ice - health and safety and all that.

The picture appears pre-completion, although she is commissioned. She doesn't have her directors fitted. There should be a rangefinder mounted on top of the bridge and the director on a pedestal just forward of the mast. Her top masts weren't fitted either.

I know that the US sometimes commissioned ships without all of its equipment. Some ships even ran trials without some of their guns.

It is definitely the Atlanta based on the two-tone paint scheme and the shape of the hull where it meets the main deck.

Here is a picture of Atlanta around the same time period, but with all of her top masts and directors fitted...

You can see the paint scheme and that "knuckle" at the main deck in that picture.

Here's another beauty, the USS Alaska (CB-1), taken on 30 July 1944 in the Philadelphia Naval Yard, barely a month after she had been commissioned. She was built in Camden, NJ by the New York Shipbuilding Corporation.
