Announcing MARCH MADNESS 2012

Hopefully this will become an annual event to determine the top ATG players each year.

For sixteen participants. May expand to 32 if enough interest.

One on one battles. Single elimination in early rounds. Double elimination will begin after the semi-finals, in order to determine 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place finishers.

Random seeding of players. (2012 finishing order will determine 2013 seeding.)

Rounds 1 & 2:
Small World

Beginning Round 3:
Medium World

All rounds:
Normal World
Mirrorish
Shroud

I think you should 'talk' to Jagular, since he posted roughly the same idea.

His involves some multi-player match ups. This is strictly one-on-one, single elimination. So "March Madness" will focus on tactical skill rather than a combination of tactical & diplomatic skill.

How are you going account for the advantage of moving first, especially in the early rounds on a small map where it will be more pronounced?

OK. Sounds good. If it creates a problem we can correct for March Madness 2013.

See this thread for one possible idea about minimizing the first turn advantage:

@Phil: I see that Jagular has a thread about an AT Global Championship. Are there really enough PBEM players to staff up two of these championships? Maybe you and he could talk and come up with just one tournament. At the moment neither one appears to be drawing much support.

This makes sense...maybe you too could come up with the Super Bowl of ATG...

You signed up on the 8th. Or do you want to play two positions?

We didn't even get eight sign ups. We could go with five, but that would mean some first round byes. Or we could just can it.

We'll go with six.

Rounds 1 & 2:
Small World

Round 3 (Consolation and Championship):
Medium World

All rounds:
Normal World
Mirrorish
Shroud
Use Resources
One Town Start
Climate - Full Range
Fog of War
PBEM Protection
Passwords

Player #1 must declare war on Player #2 during the first turn.

--- Round One ---
A: Seed 1 bye
B: Seed 2 bye
C: Seed 3 vs Seed 6
D: Seed 4 vs Seed 5

--- Round Two ---
I: Seed 1 vs Winner of D
II: Seed 2 vs Winner of C

--- Round Three (Consolation) ---
Losing players from Round Two pair off to fight for Third Place

--- Round Three (Championship) ---
Wining players from Round Two pair off to fight for First Place

I will seed everyone via a random "die roll" from a dice server I use. PM me your email (if I don't already have it) and I will include you in the results. Highest number = Seed 1, etc.

Oh cool! May the best man win.
Hey would it be possible to have an AAR written? Yes it does takes some time but it's way more fun for those following the game.
Good luck guys!

For balance, I'm leaning towards letting the Player One in each game be the lowest ranked Seed (ie Seed #6 vs Seed #1...Seed #6 sets up the game and is Player One).

I think this will help balance the fact that Seed #1 and Seed #2 get a bye in the first round of 2012.

Seeding in future years (if there are future years) will be determined by the finishing order of "ATG March Madness - 2012". So the "low seed goes first" will help shake up the standings a bit.

Since we did not get a full complement of even eight players, I think we should play the entire tournament on Medium worlds.

Any thoughts?

Random results from the dice server.

1st Roll -> SailingGuy = 482
2nd Roll -> Meanfcker = 689
3rd Roll -> TPM = 543
4th Roll -> Nego = 474
5th Roll -> All5n = 954
6th Roll -> Kraftwerk = 773

Highest roll gets Seed #1,
second highest roll gets Seed #2, etc.

Seed #1 -> All5n (954)
Seed #2 -> Kraftwerk (773)
Seed #3 -> Meanfcker (689)
Seed #4 -> TPM (543)
Seed #5 -> SailingGuy (482)
Seed #6 -> Nego (474)

So...

First Round -
Game 1: Nego vs. Meanfcker
Game 2: SailingGuy vs. TPM
(First player listed sets up game and takes first turn.)

Second Round -
Winner of Game 2 vs. All5n
Winner of Game 1 vs. Kraftwerk
(First round "byes" will be the second player in each game.)

OK. Completed my first turn and it is in the DropBox.

MarchMad-Game01-SGvsTPM-001

I'm wondering if a Medium World may be too big. Should we go back to small worlds for all rounds? Assuming that we want to end these games in a reasonable length of time.
