If he is coming full up and fast, best to focus on defending Sydney/Melbourne. As the Japanese in scenario 2 with the extra ground forces and an aggressive approach, defending too much forward may leave you with very little to defend Sydney/Melbourne when he comes. High risk operations also have a high payoff.....

Looks like he's going all out for Australia, and trying to isolate the Aussies fast.

...keep an eye on Western Australia.

it's been ages since the last time one tried to conquer Australia in my games and as it stands now, I would welcome this. It's huge and I would not defend it as a whole again, but there are some nice spots that are really hard to take and if the Japanese fail to take all of Australia or kills off all those units there, then it was one of the bigger mistakes Japan can do because as soon as he starts wargames around Brisbane I will get my reinforcements so in total I would have more troops then, which probably isn't what a JFB is wishing for. Of course, taking all of the continent and destroying all the troops there would be quite a victory. Nothing is impossible, but usually I'm confident enough being experienced enough not to make that happen. Perhaps I'm overconfident.

don't know if Babeslite has the same ground forces as scen 2. The enemy is moving with roughly 3000 av onto Singapore at the moment...

Brisbane/Sydney is exactly one of the areas I am going to defend, Urban heavy, not really a nice place to attack. But that won't be the only area as this would make it too easy for the Japanese. And like I've said, this would also trigger my reinforcements, not sure this would make it worth it for the Japanese, pretty much the same as attacking New Zealand. Much of course depends on when he will show up, if ever. No sign about the IJ moving onto Darwin or Port Moresby yet, we only had intel on those two heavy art units going to Truk. We'll see.

He has to bring a bunch of AV to do Australia, but can mitigate the amount by commiting the KB. (Like invading Mersing in the the first week of the war, if the KB is there, can't do much to stop it)

No KB around Australia and that much AV in Malaya, you have time and options. If the KB is in the DEI or Indian Ocean, then defend PM and Noumea, otherwise they are essentialy undefendable early. If it is split, it is still powerful early but can be tagged by leakers if you mass airpower to attain a quantative advantage (lack of fighters in Australia is a problem early).

As the Allies, the Japanese set the table, but you have to choose what to eat.

this routine drives me crazy, the hits on Cachalot are only FOW and the sub only has 5 sys damage so why the hell is this routine triggering? For Allied subs it's better if the enemy actually got escorts which means not attacking on the surface... that routine should be thrown out of the window or corrected to damage levels that actually mean damage...

shortest combat report so far... not uninteresting turn though, the enemy invasion armada is closing in on the Fijis which was expected anyway as KB was parking in the area for a couple of turns... no doubt bluebook will bring enough to take Fiji, I had no chance to reinforce it...

ok, now I can remember what important happened on the 27th, the enemy invaded Fiji, landing lots of troops at Nadi... one more time, the amphib bonus is just crap when the enemy can land anywhere on the map taking advantage of it and there is just no historical evidence for it... the enemy can land unprepared on Fiji with the next major base being 2000 miles away... poor little Japs in the Allied Edition... 3 weeks after outbreak of the war... in real life the Japanese couldn't even supply a division just next to Rabaul, a built up naval base in late 42, in the game, the amphib bonus enables them to land at any base on the map without having to prepare their troops at all... bluebook knows that I have no chance to move troops into those regions that early... I got no problem losing any base on the map but I do when the only reason for it is a game feature that can be pushed to it's limit in a PBEM...

with all the other convoys that are spotted, no doubt bluebook is planning to take all the South Pacfic using the magic amphib bonus, hopping from one base to the next... and the most ridicoulos fact is that I have to prepare my troops 100 days for each and every f*cking island, otherwise a division gets 80% disabled just from landing there, no matter if 100.000 or 1 enemy soldier is holding the place...

one of my subs ends up with KB in the same hex, would mean too much luck to get a succesful shot at one of the carriers... I think the only thing that could stop bluebook from taking the whole Pacific durign the amphib bonus phase would be to knock out at least three of his carriers so I could use mine to oppose his invasions...

our troops on Mindanao were ordered to retreat into the mountains and they took all available supplies with them... amazingly enough, bluebook moves only one unit into the mountains, guess he underestimates total strenght of our troops... will try to kick him out... there are several other IJ units on the island...

intel:

1st Fleet is loaded on a Std-D Cargo class xAK moving to Nadi.

as you can see, bluebook intends to use Fiji as a fleet base, which supports the theory that he wants to cut my supply lines to Australia...

Hello

Nice aar. I like you style.

What dou you think about this idea:

What do you know about his air search capability between wake and Marcus Island? If he wants the south pacific than there will be some Convoys between Japan and Truk. An Idea is to send a carrier task force once in that region. From Pearl Harbour sailing north west and than change direction to Saipan. You will need an replenish tf. It is very risky.

You should do this only if
a.) his KB is too far away
b.) his air search in this "gap" is weak

Do not stay there..simply in and immediately out. Do not expect to hit something..

but maybe stops being to be aggresive because he send units to protact this gap.
And Maybe you find something..

In way very risky and a little bit suizidal

Omat

You can do the same sort of thing with surface raiders. A single CL or CA with floatplanes aboard set to patrol on a likely convoy route... admittedly much less chance of finding anything but much less to lose as well. Old rubbish like Omaha cruisers have a pretty limited set of uses.

Mind you. I think castor knows my love of surface combat so I am biased, I have DDs avidly raiding even in 1944 with airpower everywhere. When it comes to ships and raids, I am the Field Marshal Haig of WITP. He loved raids as well, albeit trench raids...

Hi Omat and welcome to the AAR

I'm not really a fan of sending anything too far out into enemy controlled territory, not much to gain IMO and I don't like losing ships. And Betties can be flown in in one turn from nearly anywhere. Sending my carriers is something I am not willing to do as I have other plans with them and even if I would do nothing with them, this still means the enemy has to keep KB with his bigger invasions as he did near Fiji when KB was actually occupied for two weeks guarding the convoys going in and out. If he spots my carriers passing Wake, he can send KB to raid my lines, which is worse than raiding his.

Hi castor troy, I wanted to say I really enjoy this and all your AARs, even though I'm cheering for the other team sometimes. (Poor mortar...)

I've been playing BabesLite, and I'm pretty sure it's based off Scen 1. 3k AV in Malaya is most everything if you reinforce it (HK, etc) and go light on Luzon. I bet the road to Burma is quiet.

The main thing I wanted to comment on is the Fiji invasion -

quote:

Ground combat at Nadi (131,160)

Japanese Deliberate attack
[...]

Assaulting units:
4th Division
10th Shipping Engineer Regiment
28th Shipping Engineer Regiment
21st Air Flotilla
5th Fleet
15th Air Defense AA Regiment
7th JNAF AF Unit
4th JAAF Base Force
2nd JAAF AF Bn

5th Fleet is one of only two unrestricted command HQs, so that's about as serious as it gets in terms of commitment. I wonder if he will still be able to get the historical perimeter finished in DEI and Burma on time. (Or really, if he might only be limited to the historical perimeter there.)

thanks and welcome aboard Seething Ermine

yeah, he really seems to be serious about the South Pacific, guess an IJN Fleet HQ got lots of naval support so he thinks about replenishing his ships down there. Oh I am sure he will finish the historical perimeter and he will do so far earlier than real life. Not wanting to take away too much from what have happened in the game already when the AAR is a month behind but basically I stick to my tactic of building strongholds in terrain that favour my defenders but this also means I give up all the ground literally everywhere so taking the SRA and Burma would be doable with a couple of SNLF. But then it's kind of Asterix and Obelix, the whole country is conquered but there is still a small village that keeps fighting, which are my strongholds. I've got one on Java, I've got Singapore, Malabatay (Mindanao) and I've got Clark Field. He can't ignore all of them and if he does, he still has to keep prison guards there, which would accumulate and sure exceed 2000 av to keep me honest.

The only exception to my tactic is Burma, which I don't care much. Burma is only needed for a couple of weeks to bring lots of supply to Rangoon that flows to China and so far the enemy didn't intervene, he didn't even spot my convoys going to Rangoon. Burma will be important again in late 42/early 43 when you can think about a come back there when China will probably be in need of supplies again in mid/late 43.

I always try to trade land for units. I rather get out without a fight instead of fighting a couple of days and have my units destroyed. Of course, only until a certain line.

we have spotted the enemy going towards Koepang and due to the fact that we need a little more time in this area I thought about trying to interrupt enemy operations a little... we have Dutch, British and Australian forces in the area and formed up a Dutch and a Brit/Aussie cruiser SAG to go in one after another, with the Dutch showing up first to fight it out with the expected enemy cruisers (which turned out to be two BB) and then the Brit/Aussie SAG to trash the transports... that was the plan and the plan saw my Dutch cruisers as victims that had to be sacrificied while making the sacrifice worth it as I expected to see the enemy SAG that covers the invasion to either run out of ammo or would move out of the hex as happens most often...

the plan works as far as the Dutch show up first and unexpectedly enough they meet Kongo and Haruna and SURVIVE!!! That engagement pretty much equates the engagement between Louisville and the two Kamikaze DD as both Kongo and Haruna just fail, completely... guess I hit the 1:50 chance to see the Dutch surviving that engagement...

and when the engagement was over, we see the enemy SAG moving out of the hex, retreating North! Hey, this works even better than planned because at this stage the Dutch were expected to be gone already...

only three DD as escorts for two BB seems a bit light to mee btw...

The day isn't over yet of course and I was absolutely excited when I saw my two cruiser TF being in Koepang's hex with the enemy SAG retreating out of it, this could be the next massacre of an IJN amphib TF, even though it was able to unload already - which was expected anyway as I wanted to go in during the day and not showing up at night...

DD Kortenaer
DD Evertsen, on fire

the Dutch didn't move out of the hex after engaging Haruna and Kongo so also the next engagement saw them attacking, this time a CVE with a lonely DD as escort? Wow, this clearly shows how overstretched bluebook is with his invasions happening all over the world at the same time, as he only got 3 DD for 2 BB and 1 DD for a CVE to operate in this area...

now what two Kongo class BB and three DD weren't able to do, Suzukaze could as she single handedly took out Piet Hein while our ships tried to hit the enemy escort carrier... during the replay Suzukaze alone fired more rounds on our SAG than we did in return but the Dutch light cruisers managed to put several shells into Taiyo that finally managed to get away together with Suzukaze which was a bit depressing as I hoped to sink it right away with the involved forces on both sides... nevertheless, this is all going very well (far better than expected - I didn't expect the CVE here anyway) and we still have the Brits/Aussies...

and then? what happens then? NOTHING!!! The other (far stronger) cruiser SAG is also at Koepang and nothing happens while the IJN amphib TF just also sits there... what kind of frigin joke is that now again? Each and every TF of mine trying to flee the SRA was intercepted and each and every time a naval engagement pops up and now my cruisers just sit there together with the Japanese in the same hex and nothing happens... this game really is driving me mad...

here you can see that my cruisers also sit at Koepang... just like the Japanese still sit there... this TF had more than enough op points and there is just no reason why nothing happened other than yet another flaw... you can choose, either the flawed naval movement gets you or some other flaw if naval movement works as it should... grrrr... it really seems like it is just not worth the risk to use your ships...

thank god we had rain in the morning and thunderstorms in the afternoon, otherwise our cruisers could have been in real trouble... I was totally impressed about flak, we shot down quite a lot of Betties, this with a SAG I wouldn't really bet on it's flak, let alone when you look at the date... seems like Babes really fiddled with flak... this will be really interesting to see how i turns out over the course of the campaign...

Pago Pago invasion with KB sitting next to the invasion convoy and a picket PB further East as usual... am going to heavily rely on picket TFs now too...

Enterprise suffers severe damage from the torpedo attack and will retire to Darwin, the other SAGs are all set to full speed, hopefully they can make it out as I expect bluebook to order all his available ships to intercept my now fleeing cruisers... looking at Koepang, you can see the enemy invasion convoy sitting in the hex with our cruisers... dumb...

North of Koepang are the two BB, the cripples and the damaged CVE...

the reason for me intervening here can also be seen, it's that convoy North of Wyndham that is heading to Darwin and I feared it being spotted and attacked next turn or so if I don't act myselve...

in the end, we get away absolutely ok as the Dutch survived and we damaged a CVE but the cruisers' mission wasn't accomplished as the game just failed to have my Brit/Aussie cruisers engage the enemy invasion convoy sitting at Koepang happily unloading during the day...

also interesting to see in this picture, while no ammo was spent from the main armament due to the not happening engagement, Enterprise spent nearly halve of her AA ammo against two small Betty raids, same as did the whole TF... this again makes me wonder how well ammo on ships is modelled... subs run out of gun ammo after lightly damaging a single small freighter, cruisers run out of main gun ammo after firing some rounds at enemy DD and ships running out of AA ammo in no time isn't something we haven't known earlier either...

wonder if the Japanese will now jump onto Darwin... probably not yet as the single rgt that took Koepang and the couple of SNLF available probably wouldn't be enough for Darwin but with the speed the enemy moves forward he might visit Darwin within the next two or three weeks already...

In game in my experience AAA ammo on ships is good for 1 day of fighting and thats it really.

Aaaaages ago in WITP I tested British armoured flight decks versus Japanese CVs - two 15 ship carrier TFs going for it (each side had 2 CVs, 1 BB, a couple of cruisers and the the rest DDs). I just wanted to see how the small complement but armoured ships would work - of course in game you'd be lucky to amass a proper purely British CVBG anyway but just to see.

So happens the Brits did surprisingly well but a lot of it was down to the much heavier AAA armament on the British ships. And it also so happened that they blew through that ammo in 1 day. So on day 1 the exchange would be about the same even with less aircraft, on day 2, the Brits got drilled.

Thus, I think the AAA ammo issue has always been so.

In game in my experience AAA ammo on ships is good for 1 day of fighting and thats it really.

On the bright side, you may have sunk that CVE. They really are easy to sink and if any of those were six inch shells I would say yes. He got lucky there and dodged a disaster. But you were lucky as well as the two Kongos in daylight could have eaten up your Dutch boys. Call it a wash.

Can't agree with that - Taiyo/Unyo/Chuyo are converted liners and pretty sturdy - durability 53 against f.e 33 for the Casablancas. Not much aircraft capacity for being as big as they are, but they're pretty well put together.

(I know this first hand, having inserted three torpedoes into Taiyo at once, which it survived...)

yeah, that's correct. But according to what was planned, the Dutch were supposed to be trashed - by enemy heavy cruisers - and then the Brits and Aussies should have wiped the floor with the invasion convoy, which didn't happen because the game decided to forget about the naval engagement to pop up. As it stands now, the trip didn't do us much good, except having damaged a CVE. We'll see.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Jan 06, 42
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on Clark Field , at 79,76

Weather in hex: Clear sky

Raid detected at 113 NM, estimated altitude 14,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 35 minutes

Japanese aircraft
Ki-21-IIa Sally x 25
Ki-36 Ida x 9
Ki-48-Ib Lily x 31

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-36 Ida: 1 destroyed by flak
Ki-48-Ib Lily: 3 damaged

Airbase hits 11
Runway hits 27

I'm quite pleased that these bombers attack Clark Field instead of Singapore as Singapore still builds up forts and Clark Field is done already as jungle rough usually is good enough not to need high fort levels anyway...

Aircraft Attacking:
20 x Ki-48-Ib Lily bombing from 11000 feet
Airfield Attack: 4 x 100 kg GP Bomb
25 x Ki-21-IIa Sally bombing from 11000 feet
Airfield Attack: 4 x 250 kg GP Bomb
9 x Ki-36 Ida bombing from 11000 feet
Airfield Attack: 4 x 30 kg GP Bomb
11 x Ki-48-Ib Lily bombing from 11000 feet
Airfield Attack: 4 x 100 kg GP Bomb

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on Tjilatjap , at 51,102

Weather in hex: Thunderstorms

Raid spotted at 10 NM, estimated altitude 23,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 3 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 9

No Japanese losses

Aircraft Attacking:
9 x A6M2 Zero sweeping at 20000 feet

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Amphibious Assault at Penrhyn Island (168,159)

TF 92 troops unloading over beach at Penrhyn Island, 168,159

Japanese ground losses:
Guns lost 1 (1 destroyed, 0 disabled)

37mm Type 01 AT Gun damaged beyond repair during unload of 52nd Nav Gd /2

the assault on the South Pacific continues... looks like he wants to take each and every island... thanks amphib bonus... if I wouldn't have to train each and every of my units for three months to take every silly island back I wouldn't care but the onesided way it is modelled makes it just ridicoulos...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

and here it comes...

Ground combat at Singapore (50,84)

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 93523 troops, 920 guns, 398 vehicles, Assault Value = 3118

Defending force 53392 troops, 517 guns, 356 vehicles, Assault Value = 1290

Japanese adjusted assault: 1065

Allied adjusted defense: 2395

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 2 (fort level 3)

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), preparation(-), experience(-)
Attacker: shock(+), disruption(-)

Japanese ground losses:
9968 casualties reported
Squads: 167 destroyed, 1021 disabled
Non Combat: 62 destroyed, 208 disabled
Engineers: 18 destroyed, 283 disabled
Guns lost 113 (10 destroyed, 103 disabled)
Vehicles lost 146 (123 destroyed, 23 disabled)
Units destroyed 1

Allied ground losses:
2727 casualties reported
Squads: 19 destroyed, 545 disabled
Non Combat: 9 destroyed, 73 disabled
Engineers: 4 destroyed, 91 disabled
Guns lost 49 (3 destroyed, 46 disabled)
Vehicles lost 57 (8 destroyed, 49 disabled)

bluebook's comment: dreadful losses at Singapore... what can I say, wow, seems like my tactic of building a stronghold instead of trying to do a fighting retreat pays off, as well as the change of commanders in my bigger combat units at Singapore, which is the first time I have done this... spent quite a lot of political points but it was well worth it... seeing more than 3000 enemy av attacking Singapore was quite a shock though... now I know why bluebook estimated only a week until the surrender of Singapore, but as it looks now, it will take a couple of days more... one unit was outright wiped out attempting to cross the river, don't know which one, guess one of the art or eng units, or probably that fragment of 1st Raiding Rgt...

it seems to have been a very succesful turn for us, not only were the losses at Singapore a shock for the enemy, we also received intel about high Zero losses on the ground, which made me think that the CVE that was shot up at Timor sunk and bluebook admitted the escort carrier made Kendari but sunk... woooot? Not only is this my first carrier that was sunk purely due to damage done by a SAG, it was sunk by DUTCH ships!!!! means the Timor operation now has actually cost him something... the CVE does not show up in my sunk list though... the loss of one of the very limited Zero daitais at this stage must hurt too...
