every day unprepared enemy units land somewhere in the South Pacific... this feature just sucks... it's so ridicoulos for PBEM I'm thinking about a hr for my next PBEMs, something like "30-50 prep needed for landings outside of historical targets during the amphib bonus time"... I can't see a reason why the IJN should be able to land anywhere they like without any losses while the Allied have to prep their troops for three months for every frigin target later on when the Allied were the ones that really knew how to do amphib invasions late war... guess no IJ player will be against it as so far every IJ player insisted that the amphib bonus is solely needed to take all historical targets in the SRA... as it stands now, I have no chance to do anything against all those invasions in the South Pacific...

and some more interesting intel:

4th Fleet is loaded on xAK Yamadori Maru moving to Noumea.
Noumea about to become an enemy fleet base...

Maizuru 2nd SNLF is loaded on a Gozan Cargo class xAK moving to Canton Island.

that should be fun, have been able to reinforce Canton Island during the time KB was sitting off Fiji to cover the landings there, if that SNLF is the only unit tasked to take the atoll it will be in real trouble, got 120 av there at the moment, forts at 3...

that's not good... with KB sitting off Pago Pago, this convoy going to Christmas Island could be in trouble... doubt KB will do two days of full speed sprints towards Christmas, so we should be able to unload our reinforcements here... Canton and Christmas Island is where I have drawn the line... he can of course take a 6000 stack limit atoll but not in the usual unprepared amphib bonus way... and Christmas is bigger and will have mroe troops, doubt he will dare to try... no doubt the enemy will continue to take all those empty islands in SOPAC but time is working against him and slowly but steadily, my strenght grows and it's just a matter of time until he bangs his head onto the wall...

I know the game is ahead of your AAR - but isn't this type of mass-expansion also creating a lot of areas for your opponent to hold (meaning at least some kind of minimal garrison)? I'm sure he's got big plans for Australia, since there is no other reason to be doing what he's doing right now.

I doubt he will keep much troops in SOPAC, just enough to force me to prepare a lot of mine I guess because if I miscalculate the need of troops to take one of those atolls/islands back then I have to wait another 3 months to prepare a follow on wave and this is exactly what pisses me off in regards to the fantasy amphib bonus... I absolutely agree, Australia must be on the list as he clearly tries to isolate it from the West Coast... I expect an attack on New Zealand too which doesn't really concern me (other than the loss of a whole lot of victory points for the bases and the LCUs I am going to lose there) because for the 2nd class troops lost on New Zealand, I will get better and more troops as reinforcements... of course we will have to find a way against auto victory in that case, but as it stands now, we are only a couple of months into the war and it is still a loooong way to go...

KB watch... bluebook stated last turn it would have been a pity what happened at Canton Island but perhaps he would be able to cath my convoy at Christmas Island... KB was around Canton yesterday and a full speed move could have brought it in range of my convoy but most of it unloaded yesterday already and left the scene to the East with only a couple of ships remaining that would have unloaded the troops for sure today so we took the risk of losing those ships as I wanted all those troops ashore... bluebook decided not to send in KB at flank speed, perhaps he thought I would move out anyway and KB was spotted today moving South... nice, Christmas Island reinforcement operation was a success, no ships lost and all troops reached destination...

CT,

Having played a game like this where my opponents went hog while in the SoPac, I feel your pain. That said, to large part, Japan is just sticking its neck out further than they need to. Don't forget if he invades NZ, you also get a bunk of devices dump into your pools. Its a long game, a lot of what your opponent has taken is nothing more than an incovenience to you. There is very little to be gained by taking all this real estate. He is only extending his defensive perimeter beyond his ability to protect it. He cannot be strong everywhere. If he attempts a NZ or Oz invasion, he will have to weaken another front. You just need to figure out which front he has weakened, perhaps Burma or China.

and another turn when the game manages to piss me off... bluebook placed another bait TF off my coast, this time North of Darwin... two turns in a row, a SAG of mine moves into the same hex and NOTHING happens! This is a TF of several freighters with some escort and the idiotic routine fails to trigger... once more I have to wonder why DOZENS of my TFs were wiped out fleeing the SRA with each and every time naval engagements popping up when it fails once more now, just recently the same BS happened at Koepang... see screenshot...

What is the TF reaction radius? If set to zero retirement allowed .. it is highly likely to see this behavior .... I set mine SAG's to at least 1 and often 2 retirement not allowed ..Just a thought .

Setting Do Not Retire cancels out any React radius you set. For React radius to work the TF must be on Retirement Allowed or on Patrol.

there should have been an engagement, don't think it has anything to do with a reaction setting. Other than ASW forces in safe areas I am not really a fan of having my TF set to react, want to have the AI deciding as less as possible for me.

Day Time Surface Combat, near Babar at 77,116, Range 20,000 Yards

now what about that?

Japanese Ships
CL Naka
DD Natsugumo, Shell hits 1, on fire
DD Minegumo, Shell hits 2
DD Asagumo, Shell hits 3, heavy fires
DD Ikazuchi, Shell hits 11, and is sunk
DD Inazuma, Shell hits 3, on fire

Allied Ships
DD Stronghold
DD Encounter, Shell hits 2, on fire
DD Jupiter, Shell hits 9, heavy fires, heavy damage

so how did this engagement happen? I've mentioned in my email that two times the damned game failed to trigger a combat when my SAG was in the same hex as bluebook's bait TF and now on the third turn he takes advantage of this... really been amused about that so to say... with his bait TF sitting there for a week or so he could have been sure that I have no bombers on nav attack at Darwin, with my DD spotted in the same hex as his bait and me complaining about no combat triggering he decided to send out his SAG and set it to patrol do not retire... nice hindsight...

but then, the enemy pays for it as my DD perform in an IJN way... bluebook said now I shouldn't complain about the Allied Navy anymore... well, I replied I perfectly know why my DD outperformed his, one of my DD is the creme de la creme in my inventory (experience wise) having 70+ exp, Jupiter is a killer and was responsible for 85% of all hits on the enemy... Jupiter alone... and it's all about experience it seems which just confirms what has been said often enough, it's not the ship, it's mostly the crew the way it works in the game...

still, if the routine would have worked correctly I would have killed the bait TF three turns ago without bluebook having hindsight and sending in his force to engage me on the way back to Darwin and this is what I would have preferred...

one enemy DD is sunk with damage to two more but I doubt those will go down too, together with the four freighters and a PB of the bait TF during the night it may be a victory for us but Jupiter is in very bad shape, mostly hit in the superstructure but those hits cause heavy fires which usually doom a ship... the DD even made Darwin but went down two days later, we lose our most experienced DD... perhaps the ship would have had a chance if Darwin would have a lvl 6 port and lots of nav support but it's still only lvl3 and I won't try to build it up anytime soon...

Here's Jupiter's experience development... note that the night naval engagement, when four freighters and a PB were sunk, didn't result in a single frigin experience point increased... anyone arguing that the way this is modelled really works? Anyone arguing why ships being at sea with a dozen naval combats still suck late war because their experience never ever reaches the levels of those that are comissioned from mid 44 on?

The daylight engagement resulted in a jump from 72 to 77 which is huge, asuming experience isn't modelled linear but not a single point for the night engagement... pretty much the same as having subs with two dozen kills having their exp going up from 55 to 57 in two years of war... it just doesn't work correctly, ships may get a veteran status for a player but the game doesn't mirror this as the experience increase is borked...

I see you complaining about the straro sweeps. You do know that both the B-339D and the CW-21B Demon can fly higher than the A6M2 and they both have better maneuver values there? You are flying your fighters in a band where the A6M2 enjoys a large maneuver advantage.

I see you complaining about the straro sweeps. You do know that both the B-339D and the CW-21B Demon can fly higher than the ZA6M2 and they both have better maneuver values there? You are flying your fighters in a band where the A6M2 enjoys a large maneuver advantage.

the Dutch fighters are gone already, those that weren't destroyed have been disbanded... I don't like strato sweeps, for no side but this is how this PBEM will be played from turn one until the last day of the war... bluebook said he has no problem with it and he wants to use it now, so I just have to do the same later on, or give away the advantage... no hr about it as I have never found one that really works for me I would just like to have both sides going with realistic altitudes but this seems not to be possible in a PBEM... so we just have to live with zoom and boom IJ fighters that dive down from 38000 ft and later on we will see P-38 at 44000ft...

the change that was done with increased fat for flying high got no notable effect for the sweeper at all, it does for the Cap though, so the intend to make it harder for strato sweeps actually has turned out to be an advantage for the strato sweeper and a disadvantage for the strato Cap because Cap has to be up every day and the sweeper can choose when to fly and rest in between can only go with what has been said on the forum about increased fat, haven't tested it though...

The stratosweep doesn't bother me too much i have to say. You do need lower altitude fighters to stop bombers effectively. Very high altitude fighters incur greater fatigue. So at least some CAP will not be at max altitude, and for the Japs, tbh, I wouldnt even bother putting them up high because even at the ceiling it won't be high enough.

And due to the fact that sweeps come in piecemeal to eat the full CAP, which in the late war can be very bad for the sweepers, they need every advantage they get. 25 T-bolts at 44k feeet running into 100 Franks, Jacks and Georges at 10k feet will usually end quite badly for the t-bolts, given how few of them you get.

It is not very historically accurate to have fighting at 40,000' admittedly but I don't think the impact on the game is that great - just some silly numbers in the combat reports. Bottom line is a t-bolt should get the bounce because a t-bolt performed better at high altitude, the game lets you do this.

this is just ridicoulos, the sub isn't damaged... and so an unescorted IJN troop transport gets away... attacking on the surface actually is a disadvantage for Allied subs, the fact that not a single torp was fired tops the idiody...

and the same idiocy another time in the same turn, also this sub isn't damaged at all, a couple of sys points and that's it... didn't know Allied subs have to return to port with 3 sys points... another well working routine for sure... is this another Allied feature only in the Allied Edition? IJN subs seem not to suffer from the same feature...

SS O21 attacking on the surface

more of the same idiocy as last turn... last turn twice, yet again this turn... this "feature" may be a nice idea if the sub would actually be damaged but the end result with the additional "damage" from this 8cm was 5 sys damage... is this a ridicoulos attempt to nerf Allied subs completely or what is behind that well thought out routine? Subs breaking off their attacks as soon as they reach 2 sys points (that's the sys dam the subs had yesterday)? the way it is now means it plays out totally dumb, would there be an escort for the freighter, the sub would just attack submerged and wouldn't suffer from this non working routine... the routine may work as designed, the values put into the routine are totally bullocks then or is anybody - fanboy or not - around who really thinks a sub should not attack if it has 2 or 3 points of sys damage?

it is truly super stupid as it is now... but hey, probably noone ever noticed this? eh? 4 potential sub attacks on unescorted freighters were ruined in the last two days due to this nice feature of UNDAMAGED subs breaking off their attacks due to ghost damage... nice tip for the JFBs, send out your convoys UNESCORTED as this means a sub stumbling into them would attack on the surface and that would mean you are safe of all subs having sys damage of 3 or more points, means literally all subs as soon as they reach their patrol area... oh I know, no reason to complain...

the disaster at Singergrad continues for the Allied... have never seen my troops put up such a fight, not even when the enemy attacked with a normal amount of troops, bluebook heavily reinforced his Army for the assault on Singapore and still gets horrible results... it seems this really results from the change of the important LCU commanders at Singapore, nothing else different from what I have done in the past but each attack is bloodily repulsed this time... another 134 combat squads KIA... wow...

Looks like Singers is toast now with the forts at 1, but still, at least they did not go gently into that good night. Like everywhere else.

Singergrad isn't done yet, takes only two days to reach lvl 2, even with the air attacks as most of them target my ground units - for no effect. At some point it will fall of course but that moment hasn't come yet. Don't want to take away too much, the AAR being still behind the game.
