Siebenburgen Airlines (R5)

May 1993

Supreme Commander (M)ike sits in the Operations flight center waiting for the report from the meteorological office. After the prior postponement due to weather, everyone was anxious to move forward with the operation. The phone rings and is brought to (M)ike. Everyone in the room anxiously watches as he listens to the receiver. A stern look develops on his face. He hangs up the phone and stands.
"Operation Brilliant Cobra is a go" he says seriously.

With that, the following message is sent throughout the airline, to every corner, to every hangar, via phone, fax, text message: "Strike: Brilliant Cobra". And with that, the operation begins.

Background notes: The airline has been pestered for months by the Brazilian airline "Brasil Cargo". This is a discount carrier. No first class. No business class. No in-flight entertainment, no legroom, not even peanuts. At every turn they slash fares, sometimes two or three times a day. Siebenburgen Air's operations center was getting frustrated at continually having to constrantly adjust fares, adjust amenities on every route they had. Soon, things came to a head. The decision was made to launch an offensive against them. Much preparation was made. Every route of the airline was mapped out. Decisions were made where to strike. And so, in May 1993, an operation was launched. 75 routes were identified. We would overwhelm 45 of those routes with planes, and reduced fares. The goal: Capture their market share, thereby devastating their revenues and throwing them into a financial tailspin from which recovery would be impossible.

O2
We are now focusing on the smaller routes (50-100 PAX) as the bigger ones are more or less all gone.

R5
We have just started flights between most major British cities as there are only a few companies that can compete with us on these.

Look around, there are empty decent route all over O2, especially long haul. We had a major airline die out yesterday that dumped 67 747-200C on the used market.

I got 31 of them, plus an additional 10 or so 747-100s

Was able to place them all within about 90 minutes, the latter half of them were on empty routes. Had I not run out of 747s I could have continued going as the empty routes were there.

It seems Aeolos has put their eyes on alot of our lines lately. Will be a fun time the next few days to see how he reacts, if he keeps dropping prices we will fly some of our 747-routes at a price of 1$ and see how he likes that.

Aeolos has been doing the same thing to me.

I say that we make a coordinated effort to place the HURT on him.

He is ranked #15. If we do this, we ALL need to be in.

If anyone wants to go hunting, here are his 15 largest airport by gate #:

Identifier City Gates Utilization
MUC Munich 53 98%
ATH Athens 38 98%
OSL Oslo 29 99%
HER Heraklion 28 97%
SKG Thessaloniki 24 98%
CTA Catania 23 96%
CAI Cairo 22 97%
IST Istanbul 22 98%
SSH Sharm El-Sheikh 22 100%
TLS Toulouse 20 97%
VCE Venice 20 100%
ALG Algiers 19 97%
OTP Bucharest 19 97%
DME Moscow Domodedovo 18 96%
NCE Nice 18 98%

{Yes, the formatting sucks, but you can make out the airport code and name).

Another possible teetering airline is:

Boltiair

He has a bunch of planes in the bin that were just seized for non-payment.

He is ranked #94.

Aeolos are an annoyance to me too.
Not sure about Boltiair - not someone I have competed with, and on that airline is on some very congested routes.

Go! Pacific in R5 is being awkward too

Bolt is on some pretty congested routers, but I have found some where he was alone, or with only a few people.

Just picked up one of Bolt's repo'd 747-200B's in the used plane bin.

If we make a coordinated effort, we can put some hurt on Aeolos. He has been rapidly rising up the ranks, and I think he was knocking on the door of the top 10.

Now that four of us are here, we can work together to keep him looking through the window. ;-)

The airline Taita, based on of Egypt is losing planes to the repo man left and right.

He is based in Cairo, but for any US based airlines, he has US gates at the following cities (so he either could be squeezed out, or may have already lost his plane serving those routes):
ATL Atlanta
BOS Boston
CLT Charlotte
DEN Denver
DFW Dallas/ Ft. Worth
IAH Houston Intercontinental
JFK New York Kennedy
LAS Las Vegas
LAX Los Angeles
MCO Orlando International
MIA Miami
MSP Minneapolis/ St. Paul
ORD Chicago O'Hare
SEA Seattle/ Tacoma
SFO San Francisco
SLC Salt Lake City

I presume his base city is Cairo-CAI.

I am formulating a plan against Aeolos as a way to "encourage" him to stop messing with our Alliance's routes.

It will take a coordinated effort however.

Please reply to indicate your willingness/ability to participate.

I will provide additional details once I have a better idea who can/will participate.

I'm open to that. Just keep in mind that in the interim, Aoslos continues his "peskiness".

Here are more details of the plan I am thinking of:

**I would go through "browsing airport" mode, researching his gates, starting with the largest. (Any help with this "recon" will be appreciated).

**I would identify those routes, preferably those where he is alone, or then with just one other airline.

**Those identified routes would be grouped in blocks of 5.

**When we have identified enough blocks for each of us to cover 1 block (i.e. 4 of us, each covering a block of 5 routes), we would simultaneously drop flights of planes on each block. The number of flights should exceed his pax count number by at least 125%. We should set a fare of 20% below his price. That way the low price will suck up alot of his pax count (and the ticket revenues from that).

**At the same time, or in the time leading up to D-Day, match or exceed his price drops on any routes he is currently contesting you.

**As soon as we have completed that, we send him a note giving his a list of every route we did this to, tell him that we are/have/will map more/all his routes, and are ready to repeat the above process until he stops.

If we do this at the same time, it should provide a noticeable drop in income for him, and provide a sufficient warning for him to stop messing with us, and focus his attention elsewhere.

Even if he does back off, I would not intend for us to back off on any of the routes described above. We might even throw a comment in that if he knows what is good for him, he should just move off those routes and consider himself lucky. ;-)

Any comments/suggestions regarding the plan would be appreciated.

Edited: We may choose to simply send a note to say we have now squatting on xx number of his previously uncontested routes--let him figure out where they are.

Did anyone notice McAir left our alliance and joined another?

Once I saw he had left, I stepped in on a route he has from MSP into Brazil (since he should no longer be entitled to the "Alliance courtesy" on routes.

Later saw he did the same in return on a route I have from Portland to Brazil.

I then sent him a note titled "Survey Question". The note acknowledged his recent departure and asked what prompted him to leave.
I signed the survey note "Matrix Alliance member relations team". ;-)

PS: you may wish to check any routes you shared with him; or consider any of his other routes "open game".

Ok, while I admit my Survey Question note was sent somewhat toungue in cheek, I did receive a response and thought I would share it with the rest of you:

I left the alliance because i was very dis-satisfied with the members that i worked with closely (Minnesotta Air and Great Plains Air) Long story short i was told that i was competing with GPA on MSP-STL and that i should reduce frequency. FIne no big, i did it. Then in the next few days i noticed him picking up a lot of routes that i was already on and had completely covered... I mentioned this fact to Minnisota Air and saw no results. So seeing as there was clearly no team work happening as was supposed to i decided it was best to leave. In the future i would love to be a part of your alliance in other worlds. Perhaps we can coordinate and i will not hub in the same city as half of the other alliance members. But in this world i think it is best that i move on.

Food for thought....

Spent The last day Fending off route attacks from an upstart in Brazil.

First noticed he came in and jumped on some empty routes I had overlooked. Then moved in on the other Brazil Airline. Finally he dropped in on some of my routes.

I dropped rates as well as ATR prop planes to undercut and suck up his passengers. I hunted down every route he was on and did the same.
Went back and forth on prices. This morning I sent him a warning note to cease his activities and pull his planes from ALL routes that I was on (even ones I had never been on prior to his actions) or I would destroy him. Told him that I had already destroyed two other airlines in Brazil that had attempted this.

He failed to heed my warning.

Now he is gone.

PS: The upstart was "Kost Air"
I see that he has restarted operations in Mexico and is flying some routes into the US.

Meus/Mobeer:

You may wish to take note of the following:

Kost Air has parked himself on your ATL-TIJ route. He's undercut your fare and is taking pax away from you.

Also, if you check the route ATL-TLC, you will see that Kost has this 376 pax route to himself.

in R5, Skybus hubbed out of HOU dropped a bunch of planes into the bin for non-payment.
Planes to be leased/purchased (and his now unflown routes waiting for you). ;-)

Same story with Cascade Airways out of DEN and SEA.

Okay, well, I shot MAC an pm over there once I returned explaining that I was away and not able to reply........not sure why he just did not PM Great Plains himself about the issue. But, I am a little irritated that he clobbered me while I was away. I clobbered him right back and we will see if that wakes him up.

If not, well then he might be in for a rude awakening in dealing with me.

Thanks for the thoughts guys........I have 30 idle planes sitting in O2.......have not even started looking at my routes yet. But I guess if AEOLOS wants a war, I am game for one. We need to divide the map though. Someone jump Asia, another Europe, another the US etc.........that way we can focus on areas and not have to do an entire map search for him.

I would prefer to just whack AEOLOS and be done with it........trust me, we drop on multiple of his solo routes, he will get the message real quick. If he does not, well we drop on even more of them. Like I said, I have 30 idle planes right now. All prop planes. So I can easily flood several of his routes.

I doubt he will back off any.......but I bet he decides to go play with someone else. I can easily drop on roughly 20-30 of his routes with what I have idle. I have a 180 billion war chest even after I bought 60 new pre-order planes.

Okay, got reply from MAC. He feels bad about ditching us due to my non communicate. He has offered a truce to the war he started with me during my absence. Might have something to due with the 40 idle a/c I had when I sent the PM asking him if he really wanted to play rough.

But, he has been notified that he is no longer afforded alliance protection on routes and will face competition.

Ok, I will let my new AC accumulate and see if I can find some usable old ones to buy and prepare for war with Aeolos.

I checked Aeolos's airline summary.

His overall Avg Daily Util for planes is 19.49; meaning he doesn't have many spare planes sitting around that he can use to quickly react to an offensive. The bin only contains around 441 planes, with less than 100 of those useful prop planes (Brittanias, CL-44s, IL-18Ds, and TU-114s). The largest share of props are the TU-114s.

I got a pm from Meus within the last 24 hours. He was having some internet issues, so not sure about his availability to participate.

Here are his 20 largest airports, sorted by gate #

I would think that we would want to key in on his largest airports first. The interesting thing is that some of these airports are not normally what you would think of as busy/large, meaning that he may be "overrepresented" at these, making him more vulnerable.
I'm going to do a quick search of these 20, and check to see what his share is at each. That may better allow us to key in on routes that he has the most activity on.
