This is the flak suite which will accompany the 1st Air Army on its travels, comprising of 40 x 88m guns, 12 x 12cm guns and 6 x Ta-Chi 7 radars. These are all the units which start out at Fusan. I really can't see that I will need any air defence at that base for the time being, and there are boatloads of 75mm AA units in the reinforcement pipeline which I can deploy instead, albeit that these are pretty much useless.

Ta-Chi 7 Radar

Unfortunately you cannot see what the various land-based radars do without looking at the editor. Which is what I have done :-)

The IJA's Ta-Chi 7 radar is very definitely the best radar available at the moment, and is greatly superior to the IJN's Type 2. It exists only in Air Defense units and JAAF Base Forces. Therefore if one is serious about CAPing a place these are the types of LCUs to deploy.

Good to know. I'll keep one at all level 9 major bases.

By what factor is it better, like how much farther does it 'see?'

I have yet to mess with the editor.

Ta-Chi 7 (IJA) has range 82.39 miles, accuracy 45, effect 55.
Type 2 (IJN) has range 39.77 miles, accuracy 30, effect 30.
Type 3 (IJN) has range 56.82 miles, accuracy 50, effect 50.

The Type 2 upgrades to the Type 3 in 10/43.

I have no idea what accuracy and effect do, but bigger is better.

He is consolidating at Pegu and it looks like Jaluit will be the next target in the Marshalls.

I have noticed that the first version of the B-29 arrives in 6 months time. It has a range of 35 hexes. This means that he will be able to bomb lots of places without even expanding his current possessions. Eek!

make sure to get all of those NF units filled out and trained up as well. The Irving is not great, but it's all there is for a while.

Well as of now I have one night fighter unit at Yokosuka which has one plane in it, this being the legacy of the mysterious and pointless Endo Det.

I think the Irving comes onstream quite soon, but I don't have any other airgroups for it yet.

I am going to send 8 x 30cm howitzers to Bangkok. This gun has a very high anti armour rating and a long range. It might help when the British tanks arrive on the scene.

This is what Bangkok looks like. The transport planes are air-lifting the 21st Division out of Rangoon.

If they're behind forts, or dug in with at least one fort in good territory, these guns make a big difference.

Sandbox

I have done some quick tests of the Yokohama house flak array against B-29s using the beta EXE. This is just the 136 DP guns in the two fortresses and the Yokosuka Naval Base Force, as below. No actual AA guns whatsoever.

99 x 12.7cm 3YT DP Gun
12 x 12cm 10YT DP Gun
8 x 10cm T99 DP Gun
27 x 8cm T88 DP Gun

The results - very effective. At 15,000ft around 10 B-29s were damaged per turn, but at 7,000ft this rose to around 50. At the lower altitude the stack of 300 B-29s was essentially rendered combat effective after a week.

Coolio :-)

Oops.

Once again complacency bites me in the bum in the Rangoon vicinity. I had two bombardment TFs lined up to have a go at Pegu, however the slower one could only make 18 knots, and of course this meant it was sitting a mere 5 hexes from Pegu during the day phase. Which meant that the British Vengeances and Beauforts got to operate for the first time in an anti-shipping role.

That's 3 old CLs and 4 non-DD escorts lost for no result ...

Well, those CLs were not going to be much good for you anyway until their conversion in 44 to uber-escorts.

Could be an occasion for a bit of CAP trap though.

The faster bombardment groups goes in and escapes successfully. Rather mediocre results though. The DDs didn't fire at all even though I explicitly had set Escorts Bombard to On. Besides which the Es (with exactly the same gun) did fire. Go figure ...

Not a lot going on, except that troop movements have been spotted out of Pegu towards Rangoon.

I have about 150 army transport planes supplying the base now, and although he is LRCAPing it they all get through.

The huge British stack is still on its way to Rangoon.

Over in the Marshalls the Rexes are still holding out at Ebadon, where today they shot down a Corsair. That makes 23 kills in total.

Meanwhile, good news from the Ops Report ...

The first Allied bombardment at Rangoons shows that I am operating at a 5 - 1 disadvantage in raw AV. That looks OKish given that I have level 6 forts, however this attack alone ate up 2,000 supplies, which means that it won't be long before my guys are struggling.

Today saw the first Deliberate Attack at Rangoon. Casualties were about even, but forts were reduced.

The destroyed unit was the fragment of the 21st Division, a single Motorized Support element.

There were no apparent bonuses from the Corps, Army or Command HQs which should in theory be providing them. As enumerated earlier.

Aircraft Production

The Ki-84a Frank should be available for production in November. I have 63 factories for it. Once the R&D is completed I will crank these up to more like 100. There are over 400 Nakajima Ha-45 engines in the pool, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Speaking of engines, the Mitsubishi Ha-43 started production today. This is the engine which powers vital aircraft like the Ki-83 and Ki-74 so it's very welcome.

A small 9 plane fighter Chutai at Eniwetok has been equipped with the N1K1 George. He is currently Sweeping this base with F6F3 Hellcats, let's see how the ugly beasties do against this plane.

Something strange ...

His score is going down a bit every turn. I haven't analysed why, but it's nice. AFAIK the only way for this to happen is for bases to lack sufficient supply. Everything else would add to my score rather than take away from his.

Ebadon

I have had to abandon Ebadon. Not because the Rexes are doing badly but because he has done enough Ground Attacks to remove all the av support from the two JNAF Coys there.

It was a good run (24 kills) but only ever meant to be a nuisance. The planes will now re-group at Ponape before I decide what to do with them. I am going to have increasingly few places where float fighters will be useful as my perimeter contracts. Perhaps the Kuriles or something.

No further assaults at Rangoon, just bombardments. My stack is getting weaker by the day though mostly due to intensive 2E bombing by the entire Allied airforce in theatre. I have managed to FT in about 2,000 supplies from Mergui but will now withdraw these ships back to Georgetown since they were spotted at that base today for the first time.

As he is not really sending fighters along with the bombers or on Sweeps I am going to try a LRCAP exercise with 170 Nicks flying out of Pisanuloke and Uttaradit. It's range 6 so it might not work very well. We shall see ...

Rangoon falls!

I wasn't expecting this to happen quite yet, but perhaps I didn't get some of the silent combat bonuses this turn? I can't really see any other reason for the huge difference in the adjusted AV compared to the previous assaults.

Anyway, my guys have retreated into the swamp where I cannot even try to evacuate them. So they are swimming towards the hex to the SW which is coastal. Doubtless he will bomb them into oblivion before they can get there anyway.

On the plus side, the LRCAP worked quite well. I lost 15 Nicks in exchange for 20 P-40s and 17 2E bombers.

I also had confirmation this turn that CV Wasp has been sunk (as reflected in both the Ops Report and VP tally). So that makes it 2-0 on the CV front.

This might seem quite bad, but I am actually pleased apart from losing two divisions due to the retreat mechanics.

Why?

Well, he will certainly now try and deliver huge supply tonnage to Rangoon so as to awaken the Chinese beast. This means that I can get at his ships with my air from a position of strength. Which is what my game plan is basically all about.

Nothing much has happened since the last report. I have tried to degrade the port at Rangoon from the air and sea to little effect.

However, today we see the first attempted "blockade runners" approaching the port. We will see what 100+ Nicks at low level can do to disrupt their progress.

Note: All my upper Thai airbases are in pristine condition. He has not attempted to degrade them at all.
