I've just realised, it's Oct not Sep, so all my recent headings are wrong. Oops ...

Anyway, next turn might be quite interesting. Unfortunately this turn the perpetually horrendous weather prevented any attempts to attack the transport TF which is now at Rangoon. However there is also another apparently more heavily escorted TF heading towards the port, which has Walrus floatplanes flying off of it. I am sending in a small surface combat TF comprised of 1 legacy CL plus 6 legacy DDs to see what they can do. Then hopefully the Nicks will be permitted to take off during the day-time to add to the damage.

Meanwhile, over in the Marshalls he has now taken Wotje so the entire area is now his. Next stop Kusaie or Eniwetok.

Night-time surface battle at Rangoon. CL Sendai sinks CA Suffolk with 2 Long Lances and escapes but I lose 3 DDs.

In the day-time the Nicks manage to take off and do quite well against the transports. I had to expend around 40 Tojos to cut the CAP down to manageable size though (not shown).

I have been trying to bomb the port at Rangoon at night to little effect. The flak is horrendous and he has radar-equipped Beaufighter night-fighters which are very effective. There is still some shipping there at the moment, I am going to try sending in another surface TF comprised of Es and APDs.

My guys in the swamp are moving very slowly, only 2 miles a day, and today the pursuing BrIndians crossed the river to initiate combat. I think it is highly doubtful whether I can now pull off any escape at all.

The score.

Points are just about even now, and I think this is definitely the "halfway point" of the game. He has taken his initial objectives and will now I believe start to advance on more fronts simultaneously. The Hive will compress and the points balance will certainly move in his favour until such time as we can pull off the Decisive Battle of Annihilation.

Allied ship losses.

Note: There are also 14 DDs not shown.

BB Idaho recently appeared on the list, I'm not sure if I believe it or not though. All the others are pretty much definite.

This is the fearsome group I am sending in to Rangoon. Search is only showing transports and light escorts present, so it's possibly not as silly as you might think. Also the APDs started out as DDs and therefore have good crews.

The 13th Air Fleet at Samah.

So far the Nells have been very ineffective bombing Rangoon at night, but there will be other targets, and he can't shoot back.

Iwo Jima is now fully built out and pretty much up to the stacking limit. I will probably just add a few engineers when some are available.

Chichi Jima only needs its airfield expanded to size 3 then it too will be fully built. There is no room for any more LCUs.

There are only 13 major combat vessels remaining to be built. The first will be the Yamato in 10 days time, and excepting the Ibuki all the others will be here by Aug 44, which is only 9 months away now.

The CS conversions were completed recently so I have 4 more CVLs available which have been allocated to the Fast or Slow fleet as appropriate. The ships don't have airgroups yet and I am not sure when they get them. However I certainly have some spare DB groups I could put on them if necessary.

So in total I have 8 CVs, 8 CVLs and 6 CVEs available. The Hosho will not be used in combat though as it is still flying Claudes and Jeans and I do not intend to change this.

Moulmein is receiving an extraordinary amount of ordnance. I guess that means it is the next target.

Well as it turns out the gash surface combat TF I had assembled for Rangoon had an absolute field day. As most of the Allied shipping was observed leaving to the west I converted it to a bombardment TF before going in, and it paid off big time.

Firstly there were in fact some transports still unloading:-

I had set the minimum range to 1,000yds so all the 25mm flak guns joined the party. This was not anticipated and is quite clearly fairly ridiculous so I think another HR discussion may be in order.

Then to cap the day off some unescorted B-24s visited Ulithi where I have 3 AVs. I would guess he might have thought these were CVs. Anyway, the few Rexes and Georges on CAP shot down 11 of the 4E beasties for a loss of 6 of their own. Three AVs and an AS received 500lb bombs but none will sink (assuming no further deliveries).

All in all a very nice day :-)

Just to add a finishing touch to their virtuoso performance the Es and APDs sank British sub SS Trident on their way back to Georgetown by driving it to the surface and shelling it to death.

I have proposed that we add a HR that naval bombardments must have a minimum range of 7,000yds. This will exclude all the small calibre AA guns from the equation on both sides.

We have adopted the HR regarding naval bombardments as per the previous post.

There is not much occurring apart from the daily delivery of vast ordnance at Moulmein. A LRCAP operation will be attempted soon out of my pristine Thai airfields, when all the Tojo and Nick airgroups are up to strength. He is only accompanying the bombers with a single P-38 group on Sweep. Meanwhile I am very pleased that despite the constant rain of 500lb bombs the resident 55th Division remains in very good shape.

On the aircraft production front I now have exactly 600 Ki-43 IIb Oscars in the pool. I have also been able to start producing the B6N2 Jill torpedo bomber and J1NI-S Irving night fighter in small numbers. Ki-84a Frank production will be starting in November.

All in all I am feeling very good about things and am continuing to enjoy it immensely. The Yamato arrives in 5 days, which if nothing else is very symbolic.

Glad it's still fun! Looking forward to the critical stages of your plan as he moves in close to the hive.

Thanks.

He has now overtaken me in points. Sub activity is cranking up significantly. I just wonder what is next (after Moulmein).
