A big improvement over the original. Buying the expansions on sale at Gamers Gate also worthwhile.
It plays like a new engine, IMO, and probably is.

Would you compare it favorably to Combat Mission Normandy?

It's a good game, but you would be disappointed comparing it to CMBN. Realistic, but Russian devs, interface still a bit quirky, a quick mission maker nothing like the depth of CMBN. But still, if you can get APOS and the expansions on sale - let's say for $30 or less total - I don't think you'd be disappointed. At least I'm not. It's realistic and different enough to be likable without comparing to CMBN.

I think the whole Graviteam series is a real missed oportunity. CMBN beats them hands down for me. I want my strategy to be the game play not the interface. Wonderfull graphics but not worth the effort for me, but some people seem to be able to pick it up. Wish I was one of them but alas not.

But then I still prefer the older CMx1 series as I still play quick battles.

At Christmas I ended up getting "Panzer Command: Ostfront" it comes with a real manual. After Battlefront games the movment system is hard to get used to but a good game and you do not have to worry about the interface either.

I agree, great little series. Not for everyone though. Seems it's like Marmite, you either love it or hate it.

At least they made a nice tank sim with tactical options out of it (Steel Armor).

What of Op Star??? Or Steel Blaze? I have Steel Fury which is my favourite ever tank sim, with all the mods.

Gamersgate have loads of sales. Op Star is $19.99 at the moment. Can Slitherine\Matrix keep up with that kind of pricing policy?

Money matters these days and sadly loyalty to a publisher comes second when money is involved in these tough times.

Now you tell us?

It's true though, they could use a publisher.

Now if Matrix pick this one up, no gamers gate activation etc.
This may make me change my mind. Hopefully both titles.

Still think it's an odd thing to do. You can get the first one dirt cheap from Amazon. The second cheap from Gamers Gate. As I said only the Matrix faithful with money will go for the Matrix version.

Funny enough a fair few years ago I tired to get David and Graviteam on speaking terms to publish Steel Fury and it's unpublished (in the UK) Russian expansion. Now if they manage to get Graviteam to release Steel Fury Case Blue colour me interested.

Went back to the original AP43, and not that difficult to figure out as it seems. Think I got it for $17.99, a price that surprised everyone considering its relative quality out of the box. So yes, pricing will be an issue. Support would be the payoff for the higher prices I guess.

I think others may take up the Matrix edition with only a serial for protection, especially if they host all the unofficial patches as well. Especially if they go to the trouble of say including a real tutorial with their version, better documentation etc.

Their tank sim has limited activations, that was bound to put people off buying the game as well.

Would have been better to go with Matrix first up. No install limitations, only serial etc. Far better for a niche market.

Cheers MarkL

These are also my feelings on the game. I never could get into the interface.
Will Matrix improve anything?

Is this close to being like Theater of War?  I hope not really didn't care for it.  Is it RTS or Turn based?  Individual soldiers or squads/teams?

Terrific games, vastly superior to ToW.

Some details at my blog, these two entries about the latest operation star:

Thanks, man.

Infantry can enter buildings. HMGs I haven't checked in detail but it looks like no.

Steel Fury has no activation at all. It was when they where looking for a publisher for SF I contacted Matrix to check them out. David told me in the end they never replied to his emails.

Paradox sell the first AP.

As I said if they cam release Steel Fury's expansion I'd be happy.

Hi Titan,

You had a corrupt save? Or you are lost in the interface? I ask you this last question because the interface is not that straightforward.

If you are playing a campaign, just click on the same campaign to load, it will load your saved game.

Cheers,

Thanks Chelco. I save, but when I go back into the game I can't find the save button anywhere.
