The 41st USA infantry division is southwest of Buna, engaging about 10,000 strong and pretty beat up IJA infantry units.
And a couple of Australian divisions with artillery and some engineers to the west with about 28 miles to go before they enter Buna.
But the map indicates I own Buna.

Interesting how that happened.

But how and/or why?

If Buna was empty then it auto switched. Any empty base in range 3 of your units can auto switch.

It's done on a random.

Unoccupied base. Small patrol. Raise flag. Now claimed.

Important reason why you need to garrison important/strategic bases if you wish to keep and expand them.

This is very nice feature, but could it be changed that bases with garrison requirement cannot auto switch?

Couple of times I've been in a situation where my troops claim nearby base, but there is garrison requirement so I start losing victory points and it take days to get enough garrison there. For example I landed Kalidjati (Java), and next turn Bandoeng auto switch. Bandoeng have garrison requirement.

At one time there was a proposal to allow bases that were under garrisoned to switch sides. Be glad you're not the Japanese player and have a base in NW India switch sides due to lack of garrison.
