I really like the stacking levels as well. It makes things in China especially much more problematic. I am just glad it is a goose and gander kinda thing.

For the recent battle, it was a non-base hex so prep levels did not matter. For Wenchow, by the time I took it, planning levels were over 50 (we are only March 42) because of having to take the city to the north first. The biggest challenge in each hex was moving units in and out of the hex to keep it from being over stacked and completely sucking supplies.

Naval movements

One of my I-boats fires two torpedoes at a US sub transiting on the surface at night in the Celebes Sea...but misses!

Mini KB launches a raid on Darwin in the morning, in thunderstorms. CL Leander takes a 250kg, CL De Ruyter takes a 250kg, CL Marblehead takes a 800kg and a 250kg, CA Canberra takes a 800kg and two 250kg bombs, CL Dragon takes a 800kg bomb...how are these ships not sunk yet?

Main KB comes in for another strike...but somehow I managed to set all of my Vals to Airfield Attack!

CA Canberra takes another 250kg bomb, CL De Ruyter takes a 800kg bomb.

Interestingly neither wave spots either DD Paul Jones (took a 800kg AP bomb a few days ag) or CA Australia (took a total of two 800kg AP and five 250kg bombs) so the presumption is these two are at the bottom of Darwin harbour.

CA Canberra, CL Marblehead, CL Leander, CL Dragon, CL De Ruyter are all left with heavy damage. Let's hope they sink soon!

Philippines

I will land at Dadjangas tomorrow; this is the final base on Mindanao with the exception of Malaybalay. We will assault Malaybalay on 11 January and hopefully obtain the surrender of the last US-Filipino troops there.

We conduct another 50-bomber ground attack over Bataan, encountering no flak. Arnhem must have serious supply issues.

Malaya

Things are shaping up nicely here! The few days' rest is doing my troops a world of good. At Johore Bharu, Singapore's First Wave will march on 11 January. First wave currently looks as follows:

2nd Division - 462 AV, 82xp - 8 fatigue (96 planning points)
5th Division - 482 AV, 90xp - 6 fatigue (8 planning points)
Imperial Guards Division - 417 AV, 65xp - 18 fatigue (30 planning points)
18th Division - 435 AV, 83xp - 17 fatigue (15 planning points)

That is 1,796 AV with an average experience level of 80xp.

China

We brush aside a weakened Chinese Corps north of Kweisui. This 25,000-strong infantry force will march towards Lanchow.

We bombard again at Nanning. Supply has caught up again, we reduced forts to 0 with our shock attack when we crossed the river a few days ago, I will try another deliberate attack tomorrow. IF I do capture, Nanning, I'll consolidate there while I contemplate bringing up more troops from that direction in order to fight the masses of Chinese troops on the rail line Kweilin-Hengyang-Changsha on two fronts.

Naval movements

USS Shark finds mini KB, launches 4 torpedoes - 1 hits causing a fuel storage explosion on CV Akagi!

Her 14 destroyer escorts fail to find the pesky sub.

(Fortunately CV Akagi was very low on fuel at the time. She only suffers 3 Sys and 5 Flt damage. Hopefully my opponent thinks Akagi is in trouble and will retire to the north, sending his submarines there)

The weather over Darwin has finally improved. Mini KB's strike scores more bomb hits on CA Canberra, CL Marblehead, CL De Ruyter, CL Dragon and DD Express...will these EVER sink? I think flotation damage must be very bad on these ships by now, never mind the systems damage, lots of weapon mounts have been blown off these cruisers. Main KB finally strikes with all her bombers - more hits are scored on CA Canberra, CL Dragon and DD Vampire (Vampire is at Darwin! I thought she might have gone south with BC Repulse and BB Prince of Wales).

We damage a lot of extra transports and merchantmen. Good weather is forecast for tomorrow - it should only be overcast. Expect casualties to mount!

Some readers of this AAR may have noticed that my submarines have been very quiet. Well, in keeping with historical Japanese naval doctrine, I see my fleet submarines acting as scouts for the Combined Fleet, and operating at all times in support of Combined Fleet operations.

The operation taking place against Darwin for the past week is a priority Combined Fleet operation, with the goal of destroying as much of my opponent's ability to interdict Japanese operations within a 2,000 mile radius.

Mini KB has 51% sorties left, KB has 69% sorties remaining. Once they run out of sorties (expected in four to five days), KB will retire entirely out of the area to an as yet undisclosed location. The presumption is that my opponent will then take the chance of running as many ships as possible out of Darwin.

But first I will send four Kamikaze-class destroyers to bombard Darwin port, mostly just to check whether there are any defensive minefields (what an unfortunate coincidence... ).

If there are no mines, I will send in the might of the Combined Fleet to expend all its main gun ammunition into Darwin harbour before retiring to the north.

By that stage there will be 16 submarines (including five Glen-equipped boats) waiting in the Torres Strait with a total of 106 torpedoes, waiting to pick off any ships trying to run to the south.

Let's hope it works

Later during the day a Dutch sub is sighted by our Nagara flotilla blocking Darwin's eastern approaches...they score two very good DC hits and KVII is claimed sunk - we'll see.

Malaya

First Wave starts marching to Singapore! Fatigue levels have come down to the following:

2nd Division: 7 fatigue
5th Division: 8 fatigue
Imperial Guards Division: 11 fatigue
18th Division: 13 fatigue

Philippines

We have landed at Dadjangas and will take that base. Once it's fallen, we will assault Malaybalay.

Burma

15th Army has taken Moulmein. There is a tiny blocking force (probably a battalion) on the other side of the river between Moulmein and Pegu. We are waiting for supplies to catch up before advancing any further.

China

Pingsiang is taken, mostly just to deny its RCs to the Chinese. My deliberate attack at Nanning is unsuccessful.

Oh, in case anyone is wondering, my blocking forces patrolling the eastern and western approaches look as follows:

Nagara Flotilla: 2x CL, 10x DD - 807 Guns (78% ammo)

TF 5: 2x BB 5x CA 1x CL 5x DD - 11,173 Guns (62% ammo)

Oh, and four days' steaming from there I have:

Angry Boys: 7x BB 5x CL 8x DD - 32,450 Guns (98% ammo)

I'm hoping I don't have to call on the Angry Boys

So much for lurker status ...

I think those DDs are gonna get chewed up by the CD at Darwin. I have personally lost 2 CAs trying to supress the shore guns. With KB on port attack you might be doing OK.

Operation Glorious Sunshine

155 Kates and 120 Vals launch a morning air raid on Darwin - there are thunderstorms despite the forecast saying it would only be overcast.

They get 27 more hits. DD Bulmer is a new ship that shows up, I did not know it was there. Throughout the phases I'm hearing lots of glug-glug sounds, so something's sinking. On the positive side, two SOC-1 Seagulls show up as ground losses, which can only mean that CL Marblehead has finally sunk.

Recon indicates there are now only 160 ships left in Darwin, which means I've sunk around 20 so far. My four Kamikazes will go in tonight to shell the harbour and see if there are any defensive minefields. Mini KB has 43% sorties remaining, KB 59%.

The meteorologists forecast clear skies tomorrow. Let's hope they're right, weather has really prevented some heavy damage at Darwin, with mostly thunderstorms and rain being encountered. Port damage is also climbing, I'm sure more ships will sink.

My sixteen Combined Fleet subs are five days' from the Torres Strait.

Subs

A US sub takes a shot at a destroyer escort a transport task force - in retribution DD Hibiki scores a DC hit.

One of my Glen-boats at Christmas Island sights 3 DDs there. This supports the theory that Christmas is being built up as a hub. I'll recon Christmas with a Glen a little later.

Malaya

My Singapore First Wave is two days out of Singapore.

Philippines

Dadjangas is taken - 700 Allied troops there surrender.

We will attack Malaybalay tomorrow.

OK, I've looked at Emery Point Fortress.

At full TOE it's supposed to have two 6pdr CD Guns (5k range), two 4" CD Guns (15k range), six 6" Mk V/VII Guns (17k range), and two 9.2" CD Guns (28k range).

HOWEVER two of the 6" and both the 9.2" CD Guns start the war disabled...maybe I can hope they have not been repaired yet?

Hmmmm.

Looking at aircraft showing up as ground losses, I think I have a better idea of Allied warship losses:

6x OS2U-3 Kingfisher: Has to be BB Tennessee (confirmed), BB Nevada (confirmed) and BB Pennsylvania (confirmed)
7x SOC-1 Seagull: CL Boise (4) (confirmed) and CL Marblehead (2) (not confirmed) - not sure where the extra one is from? Might have destroyed one at Puerto Princesa on the first day of the war, if I recall...
1x Walrus I: CL Mauritius (confirmed)
1x Walrus II: CL Achilles (confirmed)
1x Seagul V: CL Perth (confirmed)

So judging by aircraft on the "Ground" list, CA Canberra, CA Australia and CL Leander still live. But for how long?

Operation Glorious Sunshine

Betty squadrons at Kendari are within 18 hexes - one hex more than normal range - of Darwin, and will deliver 2x 250kg bombs at that range. Worth looking into.

The four Kamikazes perform their recon-by-bombardment, the 9.2" CD guns at Emery Point are definitely online but there is no defensive minefield. No damage is suffered.

A US sub duds against DD Kagero, my escorts can't find it. There is another sub near Bathurst sighted by our ASW. There are a lot of Allied subs in this area now, we've sighted at least four northeast of Bathurst.

Our strike against Darwin with 275 bombers in moderate rain (my weather forecasters are useless!) achieve more hits. The port now allegedly has 25% damage, and the number of ships has decreased to 152.

Two C.XI-W show up as Ground losses. This means CL De Ruyter has finally sunk.

In terms of warships, I make it still CA Canberra, CL Dragon, CL Leander, DD Bulmer and DD Express. They have all suffered numerous bomb hits. Allied damage control truly is a thing of beauty.

The weather forecast for tomorrow is overcast. Mini KB has 35% sorties, KB has 50% sorties. Combined Fleet sub assets are four days' from the Torres Strait. The Angry Boys will reach out and touch Darwin from a distance in four days' time.

Other Subs

An I-boat is sighted by DMSs escorting a transport near Christmas Island, and manages to get two torpedoes off at DMS Zane but misses.

Malaya

Over 50,000 troops (1,800 AV) enter Singapore and perform an automatic shock attack. We get a bad die roll and achieve a 1 to 3, with fortifications still at level 3. The second wave with 700 AV is a day behind.

Philippines

Malaybalay, the final Allied-held base on Mindanao, falls, with the units there surrendering.

Imperial HQ has been perusing closely the intelligence provided by the IJN pilots.

It appears that, at the very least, the following ships are currently present in Darwin harbour (and all have taken at least one bomb hit):

11x warships (1x CA, 2x CL, 8x DD)
27x transports (mostly small, but some large ones - 5x Poelau P&C and 3x Kota P&C)
14x large freighters (there are quite a few large Dominion and Euro types)
6x small freighters (mostly Pacific S)
3x tankers (including the very large Shell Type-A TK Pan Scandia)
3x minelayers
1x minesweeper
6x auxiliaries (including two AS's)

CA Canberra is reported to have taken a total of 14 bomb hits between 3-12 January.
CL Dragon is reported to have taken 12 bomb hits in total over the same period.
CL Leander has taken 5 bomb hits.

I have no idea how CA Canberra and CL Dragon are still floating.

Priority targets here are:

1) Allied warships
2) Allied tankers
3) Allied transports

After more close examination of the intelligence we have on the ships at Darwin, we are pretty sure that at least the following 109 ships were in the port when we first surprised it (excluding warships):

1x ACM (4 VP)
3x AG (18 VP total)
4x AGP (34 VP total)
4x AM (9 VP total)
4x AMc (4 VP total)
2x AS (13 VP total)

3x CM (18 VP total)
2x CMc (2 VP total)

1x ML (1 VP)
15x xAKL (58 VP total)

Operation Glorious Sunshine

A US sub tries to take a shot at one of my destroyers screening my carriers that are pounding Darwin, but misses. I have 21 DDs screening the carriers.

We finally encounter good (i.e. no rain or thunderstorms) weather and it tells - my bomb hit percentage goes up from around 13% to around 24%.

275 Japanese bombers work over Darwin harbour, scoring a total of 83 bomb hits. Lots of hits are scored on juicy tankers, large transports and merchantmen, in addition to the remaining warships (CL Dragon, DD Electra, DD Vampire, DD Express, DD Bulmer?). A Seagull V and a Walrus II has shown up on the Ground list, must mean that CA Canberra and CL Leander finally succumbed. Recon seems to indicate there are only four DDs left, so maybe CL Dragon also finally succumbed?

Arnhem must be hurting. I have by now sunk or damaged a total of 29 warships and 109 other ships in and around Darwin. Darwin's port has 32% damage. The closest repair shipyard is at Soerabaja, but that means sailing back into the gauntlet of my Betty and Nell torpedo bombers. This leaves only Perth and Brisbane - and both are very far away.

Both my carrier TF's are approaching only 20% fuel remaining...mini KB only has 27% sorties, main KB 40%. There are a lot of Allied subs trying to take a shot at any of the seven carriers, and I'm getting jumpy about other assets he might have brought up (for one thing, I have no idea where his carriers are at the moment).

Both carrier TFs will move to Selaroe, where they will rendezvous with both SCTFs currently blocking Darwin's approaches; they will launch one more massive strike on Darwin port (hopefully the weather plays along again), refuel at sea, and then retire for Kendari, then Babeldaob, then Truk.

27 Betties from Kendari will also launch a strike on Darwin port tomorrow.

The sixteen I-boats, fully refueled and rearmed at Kwajalein, will enter the Solomon Sea tonight and are less than three days from taking up blocking station in the Torres Strait to surprise any efforts to run ships out of Darwin once the bombing stops in two days' time. Round about the same time, a 7x BB bombardment force under Zero cover from Kendari will make a run on Darwin port, shelling it from out of range of the CD there (30,000 yards out).

Singapore

When my four divisions, rested and prepped, assaulted the island fortress to obtain a beachhead, they were horribly disrupted. 18th Division took horrendous casualties.

Things are looking better now. Allied AV is estimated at just over 1,000. By tomorrow I will have 76,500 troops, 1,750 AV (and increasing as disabled squads are repaired), 530 guns, and 550 vehicles in Singapore. I will wait for supply to catch up from Johore (42,000 there at the moment, 30,000 being unloaded at Mersing) and for disruption to go down (disruption for my four assault division are all in the low 60s).

We launch aerial bombing against the Singapore defenders. 106 Sallies from Johore Bharu and 84 Nells and Betties from Singkawang drop over 168 tons of bombs on the island. Flak is very heavy, hopefully we can keep draining his supplies and disrupt and fatigue his troops.

Philippines

14th Army is about two days out of Bataan. The defenders there don't even fire at the IJAAF bombers anymore, they must be entirely out of supply. I don't foresee a problem clearing Luzon out.

Elsewhere, we start reconning Leyte, Panay and Samar to find enemy dispositions. We will clean those islands out later, let the troops there starve a bit, while we continue on our second stage objectives - capturing south Sumatra and the entire Moluccas, Celebes and Ceram.

Operation Glorious Sunshine

We have lots of submarine contact in the seas north of Darwin. DD Numakaze claims a DC hit on a US sub. DD Matsukaze claims four DC hits on another.

25 Betties come in over Darwin first, and score a single bomb hit on AG Canopus. Carrier aircraft attack in tow waves, scoring numerous more hits. More ships sink. Constant sinking sounds are heard over phases.

The tally for Allied shipping engaged at some point or another during Operation Glorious Sunshine (from 3 January to 14 January 1942) is now:

2x CA (I believe both are sunk now)
7x CL (I believe at least six are sunk)
20x DD (I believe 12 of these are sunk)
1x ACM
4x AG
4x AGP
4x AM
6x AMc
2x AS
4x AVP
3x CM
2x CMc
1x HDML
1x ML
8x TK
20x xAK
16x xAKL
42x xAP

The first phase is now complete, Kido Butai will retire since it is very low on fuel and sorties. Darwin must be a shambles.

Singapore

Japanese AV is now 1808, and climbing. Disruption on my first wave divisions has decreased to 40. We might try a bombardment attack soon.

Aside from that, another massive airstrike on Singapore - 180 bombers.

Philippines

About two days out of Bataan. Another air strike encounters no flak.

China

102nd Infantry Regiment is one day out of Wenchow.

Japanese AV at Singapore is now 1860, and climbing. Disruption among the three largest remaining divisions has dropped to 30.

These massive 100+ bombing missions sure do eat a lot of supply.

There are a lot of US subs in the Banda Sea trying to put a torp into one of my carriers.

I'll post a detailed update this evening after work.

And in Burma, 15th Army has successfully crossed the Salween, rather forcibly brushing aside a British battalion.

Japanese troops will be in Bataan tomorrow.

Operationa Glorious Sunshine

My carriers have retired to the north, and are hiding at Kendari for now. Betties will continue bombing Darwin port. My seven BBs are about two days' out from bombarding Darwin.

Naval movements

I have sent an invasion fleet carrying 38th Division to Oosthaven with the ultimate goal of marching north and capturing Palembang. A Dutch sub tries to intercept this convoy but is sighted by escorts.

A US sub is located by one of my destroyer ASW task forces, DD Hatakaze claims a DC hit.

Small landing forces go ashore at Beaufort, Jesselton, Tawi Tawi, and Kudat.

A US sub outside Truk tries to take a shot at an AR of mine, thankfully it misses. I now have ARs and 4,500 capacity AKEs at both Babeldaob and Truk. I am busy loading substantial resupply convoys.

The one going to Truk with a total of 90 ships will be loaded with 123,600 fuel and 183,493 supplies. It will be covered by Kido Butai, and will bring my stockpiles at Truk up to 400,000 fuel and 400,000 supplies, which, along with the AR and the AKEs (which are able to rearm up to 40cm guns), will be essential in sustaining my offensives in the Solomons once I've captured the Dutch East Indies.

There is one headed for Babeldaob (52 ships, 136,000 fuel and 97,798 supplies) and another one for Singapore (once it falls) with 58 ships and 174,050 tons of supplies, which are earmarked to be used in the invasion of Java.

Philippines

We continue bombing Bataan.

Singapore

There is a bombing raid by almost a hundred Sallies.

Burma

The entire 15th Army crosses the Salween and are opposed by the 4th Burma Rifles Battalion, which is destroyed.

Naval movements

My Oosthaven invasion fleet is attacked by six Dutch torpedo boats in the rain with 0% moonlight - visibility is extremely low. The torpedo boats are initially evaded, and then encountered again with two Dutch boats being sunk by DD Oshio and CL Oi. In the darkness however, DD Arashio collides with DD Oshio, DD Shinonome collides with DD Oshio as well...DD Arashio comes off worst, she's suffered almost 60 flotation damage.

My light cruisers shell Oosthaven, it appears there is only a base force there, we inflict some pain.

My minesweeper force that went in to Oosthaven before my invasion force encounters the remaining Dutch torpedo boats on their way back to Singkawang, another Dutch boat is sunk.

During the daytime Dutch level bombers and British torpedo bombers attack my invasion force at Oosthaven, I had set Zeroes on LRCAP but I made the mistake of using up too much supply at Singkawang with my bombing runs on Singapore, it dipped below 10,000 and suddenly no more drop tanks for my Zeroes...I pay for this mistake with a transport being sunk by two torpedo hits.

A landing force goes ashore at Sandakan.

Kido Butai

Kido Butai is still at Kendari, and the bombers entertain themselves with ASW. The Kates claim three hits on a US sub just off Kendari - BANZAI!

Singapore

77 Sallies bomb the ground troops; we carry out a bombardment attack - our AV has grown to 1877, facing Commonwealth AV of 1057. Southern Army HQ is on its way to Malaya to assist with the assault on Singapore.

Borneo

Kudat and Beaufort are captured.

Naval movements

There were lots of submarine contacts during this turn.

An I-boat of mine takes two shots at a US convoy near Christmas Island, with a total of 6 torpedoes fired, but all miss.

DD Hatakaze, on ASW duty, is missed by a US sub.

My minesweepers sight a Dutch sub, four DC hits are claimed. Another Dutch sub is twice sighted by the same group but manages to escape.

Operation Glorious Sunshine

It looks like the damage levels are catching up to the stranded ships at Darwin. 25 Betties score seven bomb hits.

Singapore

Another bombing raid. We conduct another bombardment attack; our AV has increased to 1918 from the previous turn, disruption amongst the assault divisions now down to around 10.

Philippines

We deliberate attack at Bataan, getting a 2 to 1 attack. Bataan will fall tomorrow.

Wenchow

Our deliberate attack at Wenchow is unsuccessful.

Dutch East Indies

We capture Oosthaven; it appears the base force that was there rapidly moved out. Troops go ashore at Talaud-eilanden.

Operation Glorious Sunshine

My 7x BB bombardment force conducts a nighttime bombardment of Darwin. They were ordered to shell from 30,000 yards, which means only 36cm and upwards were in play.

On their egress, a Dutch sub tries to intercept, but is sighted before it can launch.

We close Darwin airfield, and some more pain is created for the port facilities. I'm also quite happy with the ground casualties inflicted. The ships in question were all hit by 36cm shells, so hopefully they'll sink.

This is followed by a dawn run by my 25 Betties from Kendari, they score another four bomb hits.

Oosthaven

I stuffed up the fighter cover over my invasion fleet. I'm busy transporting an IJNAF air unit to Oosthaven with a squadron of Tinas, I'll fly some Zeroes in there to cover the unloading fleet. The Dutch and British bombers have suddenly all appeared.

A total of 34 Dutch level bombers attack, they only score one hit on DD Arashio, which is already damaged from having collided with DD Oshio. 20 British torpedo bombers follow up, for some reason only the Swordfish are armed with torpedoes, thank goodness for me, they score one bomb hit on a transport and a torpedo hit on an AMC. The damage on the transport is minimal, but the AMC is suffering heavy flotation damage.

Singapore

We continue with more ground attacks at Singapore, flak is still very heavy. A bombardment attack indicates that we have about a 2 to 1 advantage in raw AV; I'm going to rely on the fact that my experience levels should be much higher (average 75) plus I'm waiting for Southern Army HQ to arrive to provide its additional bonus before I'll attack.

Bataan

We conduct another deliberate attack at Bataan, getting a 1 to 1 and reducing forts to 0. I do, however, suffer a lot of disabled squads (231 in total).

Dutch East Indies

We continue clearing up small unheld bases. The Royal Navy base force at Jesselton holds out against the first attack.

Naval movements

A Dutch sub scores a hit with a torpedo on a transport carrying part of Southern Army HQ, fortunately the damage is only moderate (system, flotation and engine all around 20-25) but she is heading for Saigon for repairs.

We land more base forces at Tawau and Gorontalo.

25x Betties again bomb Darwin with clear skies, six hits are scored this time. My Betties need a rest since op losses are beginning to increase, I'll let them stand down for a day or two.

Bataan

We conduct another bombing raid, the deliberate attack that follows has adjusted assault of 128/131 - which only just makes it a 1 to 2. Forts are 0, at least. My troops are very disrupted, I should have waited a day to attack since I had so many disabled squads from yesterday. We started with raw IJ AV of 750 and raw Allied AV of 824; it's come down to 454 and 461 respectively.

Encouragingly, though, is that we destroyed 111 Allied combat squads. I'll rest at Bataan for a day or two before hopefully mopping up the very last resistance.

Singapore

More raids, and another bombardment attack. Southern Army HQ has begun unloading at Mersing. I might consider a deliberate attack on the 21st of January.

Burma

Pegu is unoccupied and i captured. Recon indicates less than 1,000 troops in Rangoon. I'll recon northern Burma to try and locate his main troops. Chiang Mai is 18% towards a level 3 airbase.

Other operations

Jesselton falls to a second attack.
