Quiet turn so we'll just go around the table and see where we stand.

First up, CBI.

India has been totally unmolested from the word go and it continues to be that way. No opposition of any sort means I've had time to build up on land and more importantly, in the air. Allied plane pools being the way there are I need every frame I can get my hands on and being unmolested means I get to flesh out squadrons as they come into theatre as well as build up a reserve pool for when the crap starts flying. Apart from building up the border airfields near Burma there isn't much I can do here at this point due to house rules.

In Burma, the long awaited advance on Lashio has begun, having cut the Burma-China road CTG wasn't in a hurry to go any further when he occupied Mandalay so something has changed, or maybe he was waiting for the Monsoon season HRs to kick in cos he didn't want the Allied air forces to hinder his advance too much. Either way, should be an interesting fight, I should have near parity in terms of AV so it's a question of the quality being on his side..

In China, it's been calm but I reckon if he wanted to, CTG, like every other IJ player worth his salt could kick in the door anytime and the whole deck of cards would collapse. It's very much a "his action, my reaction" approach in this particular corner of the war.

SWPAC
Very much a Japanese lake in the Bismarck and Solomon seas, I don't expect to be making any inroads here for quite a while.

SWPAC - Australia
Here's a shot of the northern coast. Nothing about this picture has changed much in the past couple of weeks of game time but it seems that might be able to change, CVEs spotted at Koepang just this past turn.

A screenshot of where the Allies stand in SOPAC. Probably not in danger from any Japanese advance by now.

As for the rest of you

NORPAC
No sign of the opposition here but I'm still going ahead to build up the Aleutians in preparation for the later stages of the game.

CENPAC
Relatively unmolested except for the invasion of the Gilberts. Nothing significant worth reporting.

Supply situation
Except for Burma and China I'm not in any desperate shortage of supplies or fuel so everything's peachy in this department.

Look what came in the mail
The remainder of 1 MARDIV arrives on the map together with a bunch of other mean looking Marines in assorted supporting arms units all numbered 1st. They'll hustle to Pearl asap while I figure out where I want them in the medium term.

Where are the CVs?
Not telling.

Things look to be heating up with a fair bit of action this turn.

China
Things are on the move again in China with an attack on Sian. This stack has the potential to go far, I've got to bleed him as much as I can so the defenders will stay in contact till they perish or they slip in behind the stack and cut the supply lines.

Ground combat at Sian (83,41)
Japanese Deliberate attack
Attacking force 74390 troops, 648 guns, 95 vehicles, Assault Value = 2092
Defending force 43215 troops, 157 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1310
Japanese adjusted assault: 1674
Allied adjusted defense: 2019
Japanese assault odds: 1 to 2 (fort level 4)

Combat modifiers
Defender: forts(+), experience(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
5049 casualties reported
Squads: 7 destroyed, 290 disabled
Non Combat: 2 destroyed, 48 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 34 disabled
Guns lost 33 (1 destroyed, 32 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
3350 casualties reported
Squads: 15 destroyed, 427 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 56 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 21 disabled

Assaulting units:
35th Division
116th Division
36th Division
37th Division
4th Ind.Mixed Brigade
1st Ind.Mixed Brigade
41st Division
9th Ind.Mixed Brigade
1st Army
6th Medium Field Artillery Regiment

Defending units:
36th Chinese Corps
57th Chinese Corps
3rd Chinese Corps
76th Chinese Corps
Jingcha War Area
34th Group Army

SWPAC
A naval bombardment of Townsville, I have to admit I literally and figuratively didn't see this one coming. Fortunately the numbers vastly inflate the Allied air forces (which hopefully gave CTG a bit of a fright) although I do lose a total of 28 frames on the ground, including a dozen Warhawks, not a small number by any means.

Naval bombardment of Townsville at 92,144

Allied aircraft
no flights

Allied aircraft losses
Wirraway: 40 damaged
Wirraway: 5 destroyed on ground
P-40E Warhawk: 158 damaged
P-40E Warhawk: 5 destroyed on ground
B-25C Mitchell: 99 damaged
B-25C Mitchell: 5 destroyed on ground

Japanese Ships
BB Yamashiro
BB Fuso
BB Hiei
BB Haruna
CA Suzuya
CA Nachi
CA Haguro
CA Myoko
CA Atago
CA Takao

Allied Ships
xAP Glenapp, Shell hits 1
xAKL Comara, Shell hits 1, heavy fires
xAKL Kaiping, Shell hits 1, on fire
AG Minnehura, Shell hits 1

Allied ground losses:
1137 casualties reported
Squads: 3 destroyed, 27 disabled
Non Combat: 27 destroyed, 141 disabled
Engineers: 4 destroyed, 13 disabled
Guns lost 46 (8 destroyed, 38 disabled)
Vehicles lost 29 (7 destroyed, 22 disabled)

In other news
I'm beginning to feel the bite from the relatively small amount of aviation support I have versus the growing number of airframes on map, to compound the problem there's a half dozen base groups sitting on their asses in CONUS/PH for want of escorts and to a lesser extent APs, that would carry them forward to the front lines.

In keeping with the spirit of the game with it's many HRs and a historical bent and my own OCD tendencies I'm looking at the placement of the Brit airgroups and their HQs in the defence of India and Burma. Why I do this to myself I cannot explain. FML.

You let the IJN Waltz Matilda off of Townsville??? Don't you have any Whirraways to make them pay?

LOL. I've got no offensive air assets north of Brisbane at the moment, I suppose with this attack that will change, or maybe it won't. Or maybe it will seem like it didn't. Or maybe it will seem like it didn't but really did because it would be too obvious that something is up if nothing changed but perhaps being too obvious would not be what I'm looking for because I want it to happen again, wait, what's the question again?

SIGINT
SIGINT has been reporting transports loading at Kalidjati the past 2 turns, I've sent the 2 remaining Dutch MTBs based at Soerabaja to have a look.

This IJA Bde was one of the original 5 that tried to take Lanchow, since it appears the odds are on my side I'm going to take the opportunity to chip away at him.

Elsewhere in China, a bombardment attack on the hex southeast of Patung reveals it's the 32nd Division there with 406 AV. Last count in Patung itself was 3 divisions but recon shows 5 units there, going to have a look to see what else he's flown/sneaked in.

In other news
A VMF attains carrier trained status today, that brings the grand total to 2. Oh and Long Island came on the map the last turn, will probably use her to carrier qualify the Marine squadrons.

SIGINT
40th Division is planning for an attack on Changsha.
2nd Raiding Regiment is planning for an attack on Fenton.

DEI
Soerabaja falls and with it the last significant port in Allied hands in Southeast Asia passes on the Japanese Empire.

China
Just about all the action over these past 3 days is in China, focusing on Sian and Lanchow. Combat reports are arranged by date with Sian first followed by Lanchow. I haven't been keeping an eye on the numbers but CTG has and he tells me I've lost 1,650 Chinese squads over the past week of game time. Think that's a bit of creative accounting there since he's probably counting disabled as killed but it doesn't take away the fact that I've lost a fair chunk of AV trying to hold Sian, the last attack on the 25th was particularly painful with 436 squads destroyed so that's a month and a change of worth of squads right there. On the bright side, I don't have as many mouths to feed as I did a week ago game time. War humor, how's that for an oxymoron.

Looks like the evil empire suffered parallel losses to yours last report. Any idea what the monthly IJA manpower replacement rate is?

Looks like the evil empire suffered parallel losses to yours last report. Any idea what the monthly IJA manpower replacement rate is?

I once looked at the deep end of the pool that is Japanese production and decided I like breathing so I've never dived into it but your question got me digging into the good ole manual. Simply defined,

Manpower Centres: Don't need any 'input' resources to function, they generate 5 Manpower Points per Manpower Centre point per day.
Manpower Points: Used in conjunction with Vehicle/Armament Points when vehicles/squads are 'drawn out' from pools to fill out/replacement a ground unit element. Also used in the expansion of shipyards/factories. The Japanese player can also gain Manpower Points when infantry/engineer squads are upgraded.

So, like the other resources manpower supply is variable and can be manipulated by the Japanese player, and like the other resources it's in the interest of the Allied player to keep pressure on reducing Manpower Points either through direct or indirect means seeing as it's used in just about every facet of the Japanese war machine.

SWPAC
Big boo-boo on my part here, Formidable was covering a CA force that was sneaking up from Perth in a bid to take a shot at the CVEs lying at Koepang but I miscalculated and ended up within Betty range on the day pulse, I compounded this error when my opponent pointed out I was carrying out training flights on what is basically the front line. Oops. Also, thunderstorms prevented 40 Betties from flying so somebody up there really likes the RN.

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Broome at 61,127

16 plane(s) not yet engaged, 0 being recalled, 0 out of immediate contact.
Group patrol altitude is 20000
Time for all group planes to reach interception is 15 minutes

Training flight from No.888 Sqn FAA has been caught up in attack

Sub War
The ships on ASW duty in Suva have been banging away at the I-boats camping the hex every other turn and scored hits but they're either ineffective or inflicted negligible damage as the subs still there, I have a grand total of 2 dedicated minelayers on the whole map so deploying mines there won't be an option for a while, bloody parasites. On the bright side, the I-boats can't seem to hit the broad side of a barn (touch wood) so maybe it's better not to upset the status quo.

China
Oscars sweep the air over Chungking but the CAF is grounded because I'm trying to conserve my meager supplies, going to move them out to safer airfields in case CK gets plastered the next round, the AVG is in Lashio for refit and replenishment, looks like they're going to be needed in a turn or two.

Main action is near Lanchow again, 2 tank regiments move in to try and hold the line but they do a shock attack as the cross the river on the hexside, little damage is done to either side and the Chinese shock attack in turn and push the tank regiments and the original infantry brigade out, CTG's going to have to shock attack to cross the river again or go through the mountains, either way, I've got him cold on this front for a while.

Quiet turn on the 28th so we'll skip right along to the 29th.

China
An armored car company joins the IJA's 32nd Division southeast (true) of Patung, getting mauled in the process but getting a good look at the Chinese ORBAT in the process.

Ground combat at 81,47 (near Patung)
Japanese Shock attack
Attacking force 180 troops, 0 guns, 32 vehicles, Assault Value = 424
Defending force 24833 troops, 146 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 468
Japanese adjusted assault: 0
Allied adjusted defense: 1015
Japanese assault odds: 1 to 99

Sub War
Allied ASW at Suva latches on to an I-boat and whips it pretty hard, combat animation reports explosion in the sub (can't remember specific location) and lots of hits and flooding, tracker reports an I-boat sunk but I'm pretty skeptical about sunk reports for I-boats, still one does hope she sinks on the way home.

In other news
To me, Tabi has always been the key to the Gilberts and CTG was investing a bit of effort into building up the place and I thought better to grab it now on the cheap while it was relatively lightly held then to try running the gauntlet later when it was an AF size 6. The probability of KB responding was high given that I knew it was around the neighbourhood and I was prepared for that.

The invasion fleet did a good job of hiding itself while on the run in from Pearl until about 2 days ago when Mavis patrols picked it and the acompanying CVs up. It was only on this turn that KB showed up but I'm sure CTG knew a couple of turns before this that I was coming. His positioning was impeccable as it would have allowed him a 8-hex strike on the bombardment force that was leading. But as fate would have it, turning the clouds overlay on will show that all 3 hexes where the ships are have bad weather over them and nothing flew this turn. Things could have turned out differently if he had been able to carry out the strike, he would not have been able to hit my CVs and leaking CAP from own CVs would have taken a bite as his airgroups setting me up for a decisive second day no matter whether my BBs survived the onslaught or not. I might rue that nothing happened this day.

I was vacillating between pushing ahead to the beaches or pulling back and finally decided to withdraw the invasion ships while pushing ahead with the BBs and the CVs. The reasoning was if I pulled everything back now he was going to come for me anyways and in a running battle where I was doing the running odds are I would lose more ships than he would, by moving forward I risk everything but I put KB at risk too, while keeping my invasion fleet out of danger, or least that's the plan.

The bombardment BBs will now switch to surface combat and will push out aggressively and hopefully be in a position come daylight to intercept KB while my own CVs will push forward, if we're going to trade punches I want to be in knife fighting (TBD) range so everything I have will be in play.

In the air, if recon is correct and assuming CTG didn't fiddle with KB's airgroups I will have an advantage in fighter numbers although with 300 bombers he's going to get quite a few past the Wildcats no matter how well I setup my defences. Each American CV has 1 VMF in addition to the organic VF, the Marines will fly local CAP with a range of 0 over the CVs while the VFs will split their strength between escort duties and CAP. Offensively, I have far fewer DBs and I don't expect my TBDs to figure much in the battle, anything that gets through will have to shoot really straight.

So there you have it, I don't need to return the turn for a while yet so have a couple of hours to contemplate all the possible outcomes, for the record the best I'm hoping for is an exchange of decks, worst is I come up snake eyes. Decisions, decisions.

Just don't put your CAP up to high. Make sure they have plenty of time to shoot down bombers. If he goes high escort (number of fighters) you should have an easy time punching through CAP but most likely he will run high CAP as 300 bombers will always get past your fighters and he is probably more worried about losing decks then aircraft and pilots.

You might want to consider lightly escorting your strikes. 40-50 F4s should be sufficient to punch through. No radar for him yet!

Do you have submarines on standby? They help with picking up shot down airmen and perhaps you get lucky and damage one of his CVs before battle...

Good luck !

The majority of the defending fighters are set at 15k with 2 each at 10k and 20k. Figure since the escorting fighters will default to +2k altitude of my own strike package setting I can set the defending altitudes the way I like it.

Both the VMFs and VFs are set at 50% CAP, I figure if the dedicated defenders (VMFs) are set at 100% they might take a bite out of the first wave but that will leave me wide open in the subsequent waves and I've got radar on my side so no sense putting everyone up in the air at first light. Another thing that has me concerned is only 2 of 5 VMFs are carrier trained, I know they're logging missions from the squadron pilots window but don't know how many will actually take to the air at crunch time. 300 angry IJN bombers is starting to sound like more than I can handle.

I've got 3 subs in the immediate area with another half dozen in play in a day if I push them.

If i may, those dedicated defenders should be set at 0 range. You don't want them to wander around and being recalled (thus losing time) when the strike arrives

Already set. I was toying with the idea of putting bombs on the TBDs too.

Push the subs!

How many fighters do you have? 200+? IJN bombers and torpedo bombers die easily but expect half of them to get through your screen.

FLAK is much more potent in DBB so that will be a factor. Half of the remaining bombers will divert to attack DDs and CAs and if you bled his CV pilot quality a lot of the torpedoes will miss depending on sequence...

Fighting is taking chances... Are you ready to fight and perhaps lose a few carriers?

and watch out for the dreaded 8 hexes range strike IJN capabilities! Close the range as much as you can
