vontiger was extremely upset at the end of our last game. Hopping mad! This means WAR!

Across the vast gulf of the Pacific, a mind that is to our minds as ours are to the beasts that perish, an intellect vast and cool and unsympathetic, regards our lands with envious eyes, and slowly and surely draws his plans against us.

I have obtained a photograph of vontiger from the internet. Here it is.

I learned valuable lessons after the last game, check your turn before you send it, ensure your carriers always have fuel and be aware of the CAP issues with IJN until radar is available... Now the planning has begun to redeem myself and remove the shame from my family....

12/8/41 This is the worst I've ever seen. I should have titled this AAR A Farewell to Arms ... and Legs. This has only put more steel in my spine (in the form of shrapnel).

Good to see you pick an avatar, vontiger. Is that Fujin the god of the wind?

Oh, I found it, it's Raijin, the god of thunder and lightning. Here's a pic of Raijin (left) with Fujin.

I, on the other hand, only take instruction from Loren, goddess of beauty. She is known in other cultures as Aphrodite or Venus, born from the foam of the sea.

As you can see from my avatar, I am quite fetching myself.

As to Clausewitz, perhaps it would be better if you listen to Nathan Bedford Forrest:

My opponent requested that we play with "realistic r&d off". I don't know what this may lead to and I know it does not benefit me in any way, but my response has been to look for other contractors to provide my navy with torpedoes that actually work.

Also, I've been caught in an attempt to insult my opponent unfairly (but only through my own stupidity). Although I used the word "surely" in the missive in question, my characterisation of him was unfair on at least one level. This has induced me to give him further opportunity to respond, and this is his reply:

I was reviewing our correspondence and became alarmed at what you said here. Your family (specifically your wife and child) don't actually know anything about this do they? I cannot stress strongly enough the importance of maintaining deniability about our operations. If you have exposed us (inadvertently or otherwise) you are aware of the location where you deposited the cyanide capsule that accompanied the game disc and manual? Correct?

The December 8 turn is now complete, and back in his hands. All I can say is that perhaps this time I shall be less merciful and more swift!

12/10/41 The enemy has reached the shore opposite Hong Kong. We believe they're asking for our surrender, but we no speakee Japanese.

Managing all the ships trying to escape to safe harbor is like herding cats. If I don't give them waypoints and order them to proceed directly they pick the most peculiar courses. They also retreat even when I order absolute threat tolerance.

We've tentatively settled on a house rule of no 4E bombing below 10k feet before '43 (some B-17s attacked some of his troop ships at 1k feet, without result).  He suggested that for throughout the war, but I cited the second raid on Ploesti as an example of it actually happening.  If anyone thinks I'm being unfair, please chime in.  I've attached an article about a demonstration in '38 that B-17s could intercept ships at sea.  The cloud deck was at 1,100 feet so they flew under it.  Thanks for your comments.

Agreed rule no low level bombing of 4E before 1 July 1943- I still don't believe that a fully laden B17 or B24 would attack any ships at 1000ft. They would be slow and an easy target for any AA gun on a ship. The intercept in the article I suspect was done by B17s with no loaded bombs... it also needs to be remembered that the Rex was on its own rather then in a fleet/convoy and it was an intercept not an actual bombing. I hope the amount of 4E bombers getting shot down is high when this low level naval bombing begins, but I suspect the game engine wont work correclty.

The house rule vontiger refers to may just become indefinite, as it seems to make him more unhappy than it pleases me. Perhaps he's just jealous because he doesn't have any 4Es?

Many of my ships retiring from Manila are engaging IJN CAs etc. They are valiantly trying to force them to run out of ammunition, and I think they've nearly defeated the cowardly Japanese cruisers.

Something unusual has just happened. The Lexington was patrolling about halfway between Palmyra and Canton Island when ...

Two Japanese surface raiders, Hokoku Maru and Aikoku Maru, arrived heading SE directly toward Lexington. Oops!

12/15/41 My attempts to salvage ships from Manilla and Hong Kong have fared considerably worse than the first time I engaged vontiger. The lesson appears to be don't try to get cute, just order everything to speed south as fast as possible. I have reports from Sigint telling me that there's a severe shortage of nitrocellulose in Japan right now, so perhaps those ships have procured for me an advantage.
