3/30/42 Big air battle over Pt. Moresby. As you can see we each lost quite a few fighters. Since the battle was over PM I don't think I lost near as many pilots as he did. The airbase and port at Rockhampton is being beat up pretty well, still don't know how he's going to supply this rather rude incursion.

3/31/42 A small force has landed at Wyndham, which was undefended. Another TF of about 10 ships including troop ships has moved into the area, but I can't tell if it's to drop more troops at Wyndham or if they're going to invade at Darwin. One of his carrier TFs is clearly headed to Truk and the other is not far behind. They haven't attacked anything, just their fighters have engaged, so they probably don't need sorty replenishment but they must be short of fuel and may want to repair superficial incidental damage to the ships.
There were no air attacks at PM today, must be rethinking how to handle it, or to paraphrase SW, he is redoubling his efforts.

3/31/42 The delay in getting a new turn is due to vontiger's desktop's operating system needing to be reinstalled. He has the turn on his laptop, but he's been busy fixing his main computer, which he greatly prefers to play the game on. He has sent me the battle replay and I'll get to that but will begin with the situation on the 29th.
As you can see, his CVTFs have separated. You can also see my CV fleet west of Fiji. Wanting to try and catch one of them I ordered the course you can see towards the center of the Coral Sea. On the 29th and again on the 30th my fleet moved much too slowly and I was calling Halsey every name in the book. It turns out it wasn't his fault but mine. I had four DDs in an ASW TF attached to the lead CV TF. I don't normally do that and didn't know that that would slow the whole operation down. Now I know. A good lesson for any of you who didn't know that either. It turns out that mistake may have been quite fortuitous, but I will explain that later.

Well, his western KB sank some AKL's in port at PM and hung there for another day, then headed east to where you see it here. I figured it would head to Truk the next day, but there was the chance it might do a raid on Tulagi. Therefore I ordered the fleet to move to a position off Guadalcanal and merged those ASW DDs with the Saratoga TF. I was nearly certain he did not know where my CVs were, but tomorrow his land based search planes would surely spot me. I ordered all training of my pilots to cease and prepared for battle.

3/31/42 When morning arrived the 1/2 KB and my fleet spotted each other. My TF's were given range 6 reaction orders, and apparently so was his, as both forces approached each other after this point. As you will see, the area is crawling with IJN subs.

Note the sub tracks in the lower hex with two of my TFs. The four TFs have only momentarily separated. As in my experience the IJN always strikes first, I'm a bit queasy at this moment.

By the way, TF 162 is not my lead TF. 141 is, and 162 has orders to follow 141. Interesting.

Here they come! vontiger has had bad luck once again. Thunderstorms are covering my fleet.

His Kates are using bombs instead of torpedoes, and dropping them low. I don't know what's up with that. I've considered having my Devastators use bombs because of the dud rate, but I decided even 1/2 as many torpedo hits was just too valuable.
I also don't know what's up with some of my CAP scrambling to 37,500 feet. If any of you know, speak up please. Maybe the T-storms made it too uncertain as to where all his planes were?

Only one group of 3 or 4 Kates attacked Yorktown and got that one hit. All the rest of his planes went after the escort. Amazing. Knowing vontiger, he probably had to be peeled off of his ceiling.

Looks like Ryujo must have been blown to bits before it had a chance to sink. Yamashiro? I don't know, 50/50 maybe?

If not for that ASW TF slowing everything down, I likely would have run into those AP/AK TFs, giving my position away. I would have had to attack them because of the proximity of his 1/2 KB. Also, the CS(s) with them might have spotted me first anyway, though it's possible I shot down all his float planes at Rockhampton.

I wonder what she'll bring us tomorrow.

Hey Moderator. I know the forumite rankings are based in part on number of posts, but vontiger deserves better than Matrix Trooper. Jump him up a level or two. It makes it look like I'm way better than him, and I'm no better than him. If you can't jump him up, knock me down.

You probably should knock me down anyway, that Elite Guard ranking is undeserved.

Geoff,
Nice job! 2 CV's, 2 CVL's, 2 BB's & 2CA's severely damaged or sunk, in exchange for 1 CV & (Yorktown) 1 CA damaged?
Whats the plan now - you'll surely have him thinking defensively!

I think that bomb bounced off a turret on the Astoria, but ironically enough the St. Louis was on fire. I don't think there will be any more invasions on the east coast of the Australian continent, though he still may try to take Darwin. His troops at Rockhampton are marooned. I think he's been holding back troops from the Indian theatre and from finishing off Java to do this Australian adventure. What will they do now? I'm going to have to think long and hard about Java, but I'm not sure I can salvage her. China will continue to be a disaster.

vontiger and I have agreed to an armistice. Hopefully he will be looking for a new opponent soon. I plan to convert to DaBigBabes version C, and after studying it I'll be looking for a new opponent as well.
