Hi

I am back at it and a Babeslite scen 26B campaign has just been started against cuttlefish. I'm honored cuttlefish took up my opponent needed request as he's a well known member of our so great community. It's Oregon (US) vs Tirol (Austria) hence the AAR title. All the luck to him and a little bit more for us.

Settings:

Realism options:

FOW ON
advanced Weather OFF
Allied damage control ON
PDU ON
historical first turn OFF
Dec 7 surprise ON
reliable USN torps OFF
realistic R&D OFF
no unit withdrawels OFF
reinforcements VARIABLE +/- 60 days

Game options:

combat reports ON
auto sub ops OFF
TF move radius ON
plane move radius ON
facilities expand OFF
auto upgrade ships and airgroups OFF
air and ground replacements OFF
turn cycle 1 TURN

House rules:

no new Allied TFs on turn 1
only one Japanese aerial port strike on turn 1
cease fire in China until 1 Feb 42
no Allied strategic bombing of occupied Allied territory at any time, Allied strategic bombing only allowed on Japanese held territory of 12/7/41
no Japanese strat bombing in China
no Allied 4E bombers on naval attack below 10.000ft. Valid for Army 4Es, not valid for Allied NAVY heavy bombers at any time
as realistic R&D is turned OFF, no overabuse of this function. Means to not produce any aircraft earlier than 3-4 months of their normal arrival
paying pp for restricted units crossing borders

Orders were given and I am about to look at the first turn this afternoon. I truly hate the first couple of turns just because of all the endless clicking around. First turn my airforce was organized and a training programme started, my ground units have been ordered to move into position, base expansion started where needed. Next turn will see me creating a horrible high number of task forces to move the ships where I need them. After about four to five weeks I usually end up in the situation to have everything where I want it and then things start to become routine works.

Game on!

This is a restricted Allied AAR so

NO CUTTLEFISH BEYOND THIS POINT!

Someone who will be a challenge and go the distance too, this will be fascinating, I am sure.

Let the ranting begin.

Just noticed advanced weather off, interesting. I thought most people left it on.

Sick of playing Storms in the Pacific?

Save Wake Island. It tends to have a 50% chance to hold off the first IJN invasion and when it does the Japanese player normally has to scramble to redirect assets from its "scripted" opening to take it.

If it holds off the first invasion and you do reinforce it the second IJN assault will fail and their timeline in that theater will be totally off kilter.

Check to make sure about the advanced weather thing. During my testing when I turned it off, even though I got a weather prediction of partial clouds for every day, when we actually got into combat the weather was always there. So, I am not sure it is working to turn it off.

Cuttlefish should give you a good game. You might get to go pretty deep for a change. Glad to see you found a good player. Oddly enough, I miss the rants..

Turning advanced weather off gives always same prediction, but the actual in-game weather do vary. Prediction have some impact to actual weather, so playing advanced weather off gives generally slightly better, but still random weather. That option is working as it as is should, turning weather off does not mean that weather is partial cloud all the time. You can check the manual.

PDU on and Realistic R&D off........didn't realize you were masochistic enough to WANT to face jets in '43 Castor.

At least we should see some very entertaining rants once they arrive.

today's main event... I wasn't sure if Cuttlefish would go the conventional way of attacking PH or going after Manila... in contrast to WITP, it seems there are more ppl going with a PH attack, which surprises me in so far as subs should be more of a threat in AE than WITP... damage done on the BB looks horrible when reading the combat report only but watching the replay showed quite a lot of 250kg bomb hits as 40+ Vals were going after the ships in port... modern light cruiser St. Louis blew up as a torp hit ignited her magazins but that was the only ship to be sunk instantly during the attack... BB California is surely done with BB Tennessee being also hit hard but not on fire anymore so I am sure being able to save her but I fully expect another strike tomorrow so any follow on damage may see her sunk also... damage on the other BB is light because even very high sys damage can be repaired fairly fast in a big port like Pearl Harbour and all those bomb hits mostly caused sys damage... not to forget, this is Babeslite with bomb effect greatly reduced... aircraft losses were absolutely light for both sides, I can not understand why IJ players are afraid of flak (no matter if day one, two or three) as it is nothing more than totally pathetic...

today's air losses were minimal for both sides... while our 8 aircraft lost are correct, the enemy probably hasn't even lost 8 and KB's losses over PH were around halve a dozen in total at best, probably most of them write offs...

as you might have noticed, there was no second KB attack on Pearl Harbour this turn... don't know if Cuttlefish thought the damage was higher than it actually is or he was influenced by my comment about ordering my flak to actually fire at his bombers next time they show up over Pearl Harbour... I am no fan of IJ players attacking Pearl halve a dozen times but I wouldn't mind if Cuttlefish would have attacked a second time... not saying I'm not happy that he didn't...

we take some revenge in sinking these two Japanese AMC that were raiding in the South Pacific... spotted them yesterday and have set up a patrol zone for the two cruisers and their escorts and the IJN runs directly into them losing both AMC... I'm not sure why other Allied players often panic when enemy raiders show up deep in their LOS because usually they are dispatched rather easily... I would use those AMC elsewhere as they are worth quite some points and usually don't do much more than wasting fuel...

an infantry regiment is coming ashore at Guam together with a Base Force... looks like overkill to me, reinforcing the Base Force with some SNLF would have done the trick easily while usually the Base Force alone is sufficient for Guam while I would send the Base Force somewhere else anyway, you can take Guam later whenever you want...

xAKL Tatebu Maru

SS KXVIII, hits 1

do I know that kind of attack already from a previous game? Yes I do and once again all I can say is that a Japanese small freighter performs better than an Allied sub in surface combat because of a code line that makes Allied sub commanders pure dorks due their low(er) (compared to IJN skippers) agression rating... the freither fired something like two dozen shells while the sub failed to fire a single shell or torpedo... yup, that sounds perfectly realistic to me...

I hate losing so many xAKLs and xAPL in the early going as the Allies. They never get any new ones and these ships are very valuable in the first year of the war. Once the LSTs and LCIs start to arrive then they are not needed so much. Still always valuable for supply trips to smaller bases.

I'm not really concerned about the xAKL as I've got plenty of them with more than a hundred sitting around. As soon as the front has stabilized my shipping losses should go down dramatically with the occassional loss due to KB popping up somewhere, subs or an air attack now and then.
