23 August 2014: Edited the thread title to reflect the latest edition of the mod. See the latest post about details: HERE
---

My very humble modification adding the Allied Finland into JTCS EF OOB is available at http://www.theblitz.org/message_boards/forumdisplay.php?fid=241

At the moment it comes with three scenarios:

** Across River Vuoksi LWM

Soviet push for a bridgehead over Vuoksi river. July 1944.

** Bitter Kuuterselka LWM 1.01

Soviet attempt of breaking through a weak point at Finnish main defence line. June 1944

** Crusaders at Hango LWM

A hypothetical scenario with Finns attacking Germans at Hango. Based on D. Bevard Hango scenario set in 1941. August 1944.

Next scenario will begin with a "D", that's a promise!

I will slowly, very slowly, add new ones. Anyone feeling like adding scenarios to Finno-Soviet front of 1939 - 1945 please feel free to do so! There's three separate wars to pick from!

Edit: Fourth scenario, covering finally the Lapland War as planned, is now work under progress:

** Delaying Action at Ylimaa LWM

German Mountain Jäeger Rgt 218 with a delaying action, providing time for depots evacuation as planned in Operation Birke. October 1944.

The LWM 1.1 alpha should be out in a couple of weeks time. New features include the migration of the UK, French and the US OOBs to the EF2 side of things. Two new scenarios as well, including the Ylimaa scenario mentioned above, and a what-if version of D.Bevard's 'Cracking The Line' stock scenario with the Anglo-French Expeditionary Force making an appearance at Winter War.

I will put a new post up here once the alpha version is available.

An alpha version of LWM 1.1 for open testing is available now via the same link as above.

Main new features:

- Easy easy installation with JSGME Mod Enabler utility
- New units added to Finnish OOBs, including quite a few airplanes: Fokker D.21, Hawker Hurricane mkI, MS.406, Curtiss Hawk 75A, Bristol Blenheim MkI, Dornier Do 17 (a first introduction to JTCS as a whole!), and Junkers Ju-88
- The UK OOB migrated to EF2 side of things
- French OOB migrated to EF2 side of things
- The US OOB migrated to EF2 side of things

Also available is a new scenario pack, including the following scenarions:

** Across River Vuoksi LWM 1.1
** Bitter Kuuterselka LWM 1.1
** Crusaders At Hango LWM 1.1
** Delaying Action At Ylimaa LWM 1.1
** Enforcing The Line LWM 1.1

Enjoy! But please keep in mind it is the first version, and especially the new countries as a whole have barely been tested apart from a quick checking that they appear OKis with OOB Editor.

A new version, integrating Warhorse's Polish and Bulgarian mods into the system is out now!

There's a new name for the mod as well, to better reflect the scope of it now:

East Front: Forgotten Battles

http://www.theblitz.org/message_boards/forumdisplay.php?fid=241

The amount of scenarios included in the download is now eight, with Warhorse's two scenarios there now as well. Enjoy!

I was really excited when I saw this but after I applied this, it totally hosed my system, and when I unapplied it my game was still hosed.

Those that find this and want to try Forgotten Battles DON'T!

I need to uninstall my JTCG and then reinstall it from scratch again and then reapply the patch, losing all my saved games.

Oh well, too bad this is broken.

I am sorry to hear of your experience

This is the first time anyone reported of a problem like this. Could you please provide more information: what's your OS version, what do you mean exactly mean by that it 'hosed your system'?

JSGME has been foolproof for me, disabling anything that was enabled has always resorted in a clean install.

Well after I installed the mod using the JSGME tool, when I launch JTCS and select EF then the screen just hangs, nothing happens the screen is white with an olive drab background, and I have to Ctrl+Tab out and have to try to kill the ef/eastfront process, but this does not work and I have to reboot.

After I deselected the mod (using JSGME), same thing happens when I launch the game.

Prior to using JSGME and the mod, my JTCS worked fine.

Maybe because you went off the JTCS screen to select EF? I never use that means, just double-click on the exe, within the game folder. I've been modding this game for over 12 years, and ever since JSGME came out, used that instead of swapping physical folders, NEVER had a problem with JSGME. I would bet it is something else, like going from the menu or whatever?

Well I used the JSGME to swap out the mods. But I have had (up until now) no problems with running the game from the menu. Now without the mods the game is completely broken since I applied whatever the original mod was/did to the original exe.

I don't see how going from the menu to the exact game causes an issue, since that works fine, what happens is when I select a scenario (any) to play is when the white screen of death happens, so no I don't think it's a problem with switching between the menu and the game (since that works) but more something is obviously wrong with the mod when it switched out and failed to work the first time, and then when disabled it failed to disabled whatever it was supposed to.

Mike, I don't think that's it either. I always launch the game from MCS Main Menu, not from the exe.

Maybe it is somekind of Windows security issue? I am not very much into how MS set up the security unfortunately.

I packaged the mod in W7 64 bit system and it could be I had the exes set up in XP SP3 compatibility mode?

I moved to W8.1 64 bit a while ago, but I am pretty sure the package is from my old rig.

What OS are you using?

Edit typos

What JSGME does it copies a new set of exes to replace the original ones, then it adds a ton of new data files like unit data, bitmaps et cetera. I added the new East Front menu to notify the user when the mod is enabled, as that is pretty much the only thing you should see.

Apart the exes, the mod only adds new files. Everything vanilla should remain compatible. I always get the original state back when I disable it. Quite a mystery

Yeah, I am not sure what is wrong yet. I am using Windows 7 64bit. All I can say is that everything was fine before I used the 1.36 mod, then I applied it, it loaded up to the point where I selected a scenario to try, when I first loaded the scenario (any) it just failed at that point. Then I tried a few more times (each time needing a reboot to get out of the hung application), then I removed the mod (using the tool) and the same thing started happening again.

That's just strange. Maybe just wait for the 1.05 to come out instead. We try to incorporate most of the mod there...

A US Sherman M4/76 in Russian Service from ASL (Advanced Squad Leader), sort of a play on words or counters. I was born in the USA and raised an American but my dad came from Russia, lol.

Been playing ASL since 1986, and SL/COI/COD/GI before that from about 1977/8'ish.

I'm a BIG ASL fan, still have all of my boards and stuff, just haven't played in years!! Lots of extra's as well, used the system to play 1/285th micro-armor too, 40 meters=5 inches!!

RE your problem, I seem to remember, years ago, an issue with a certain amount of scenario's in the game causing this, or was that WAW? Also, I think if you try to play a scenario that is calling for something not in the directory, it will crash too? Very strange...

ASL is still a thriving community, in fact I just went to my very first ASLOK in OH, this last October and brought my 17 year old son (whom I started on ASLSK 2-3 years ago and now have moved him up to ASL). There were 168 in attendance and I was kicking myself for not coming years ago. In the Chicagoland area there usually is 65 to 75 that show up each April for the ASL Open, so those are the two tournaments I goto each year.

Also, their is VASL (the ASL online players tool kit) and when used with Skype it's almost like playing Face to Face, I have about 10 scenarios going with that tool.

You know in fairness to this JSME and 1.36 FB add on, what I did was to apply the add on and then also added like 50 or so scenarios I downloaded from the old Blitz site, maybe the combination of the two whacked it out?

I just got done reinstalling the base game and applying the 1.04 patch, but have not added any of those scenarios from the Blitz to it, and just now I realized that some of these old scenarios may be from the old Talonsoft game and not the Matrix version.

I am still leary of trying out the FB thing though, lol, but perhaps you right and it was one or all of the scenarios that caused the thing to crash?

Cheers and Merry Christmas.

Ahh, that could very well be the culprit!! There is a utility to check scenario's, called CSLINT, but not sure if it will work if you say put those scennies in a folder by thereself to check out, one-by-one. I'de be willing to bet that is the problem, my friend!!

Merry Christmas, BTW, I have VASL, but haven't done anything with that in years, all free time being spent on modding and the development team!!

Maybe over the next week or so you could post a link to that cslint thing?

I still have the original Talonsoft EF, EF2, CG disk1 stuff, lol. Hopefully all that has been updated in the Matrix edition?

... what happens is when I select a scenario (any) to play is when the white screen of death happens ...

In the next (February) update, I have implemented a new logging facility that will detect and record if a file is missing (or misnamed, etc.) -- a common cause of "white screen of death" crashes.

Example (from West Front):

berto@telemann:/games/matrix/cs/devel/work/Logs_B8rto> egrep "ERROR|WARNING" *.log

109th.scn_engine.log:2013-12-24 13:57:04 wf.exe: [ID 100 WARNING] starshell.bmp not found
109th.scn_engine.log:2013-12-24 13:57:05 wf.exe: [ID 100 WARNING] NWE-main.pdx not found
...
Abiod.scn_engine.log:2013-12-21 13:43:07 wf.exe: [ID 100 WARNING] MED-main.pdx not found
...

This will be a great help in diagnosing many crash situations.

I will be writing up the new logging facility in a forthcoming Coder Diary.

No, CSlint requires a full game installation, with everything in its usual place.

So far, CSlint is available to the Dev Team only. (@Warhorse: CSlint development, including extending the scenario checker, csscnchk.pl, is my highest priority over the next week or two.) We might make CSlint publicly available, but maybe as a separate utility, apart from the standard game install package. It's undecided yet.

Why would JSGME (or anything else) muck with your save game files? What's to stop you from copying/pasting all *.btl (etc.) files to a safe place before reinstalling from scratch?

Thanks for the update.

In my frustration, I just wiped it all clean since I really had no idea what was not working anymore.

No big deal, only 3 lost CG which I had not got very far in, all the better to try again.

Looking forward to the next release.

As of MCS version 2.02, available now as a User Modification:

Warhorse Production together with Battle Kat Entertainment proudly present:

Campaign Series: The Forgotten Battles 2.0

Campaign Series: The Forgotten Battles is a mod focusing on minor nations, and the battles they fought, buried in annals of history, but forgotten no more!

quote:

When installed, this Add-on modification will absolutely not affect any stock or custom scenario.
Worth a repeat: none of the existing games you have or are about to start will be affected.

Forgotten Battles 2.0 continues to boldly go where no Campaign Series scenario has gone before:

The mod has its roots on East Front, where in its previous versions it added a couple of new nations such as Allied Finland, and enhancing other nations such as early war Poland units and adding Bulgarian troops and partisans. Not just about minor nations, 'What-Ifs' were supported also in a form of adding an Allied Germany, and migrating the French, UK and US OoBs from West Front to East Front.

Some of the early content from the various Forgotten Battles 1.x versions made it to MCS 2.00 UPGRADE, while other content remains proprietary to this mod, such as the medical units that are still not ready for prime time.

New East Front Game Content

Forgotten Battle 2.0 proudly presents the World Premiere of the first 2D Project results to EF. New and enhanced graphics and a thorough upgrade to their OoB is provided for:

- EF Russia
- EF Germany
- EF Italy
- EF Rumania,
- EF Hungary
- EF Finland,
- EF Slovakia, and
- EF Poland, including the addition of LWP organizations and units for a full 1939-1945 unit roster timeline.

New West Front Game Content

While 2.0 is still mostly about East Front, we are looking forward to try more new things out with West Front and Rising Sun too.

Included in the WF add-on are:

- WF Polish Army in Britain and WF Polish Army in France OoBs.

New Rising Sun Game Content

Rising Sun? Stay tuned!

About this User Modification

Campaign Series: The Forgotten Battles continues to be a User Mod. It will have its issues and errors, which, when reported to us, we will fix if not sooner then later. It is packaged to go under Campaign Series User Modifications folder (/Mods), and it should be installed and uninstalled only via the JSGME mod management tool.

Your continuous co-operation and support is appreciated!

Installation

quote:

See Game Manual pp 123-125 about activating User Modification content on your Campaign Series Installation.

As part of Forgotten Battles 2.0 release, two new User Modifications are available to be enabled via the JSGME graphical User Interface:

ALL - Forgotten Battles 2.0
EF - Polish LWP Insignia and Scenarios Mod

The recommended installation procedure is to first enable Forgotten Battles 2.0. Then, when playing Polish People's Army scenarios, please enable the Polish LWP Insignia and Scenarios Mod for the duration of that game play.

NOTE: Once enabling Polish LWP Insignia and Scenarios Mod when Forgotten Battles 2.0 is already enabled, the JSGME interface will warn you about overwriting the icons2d07.BMP file. Please accept the overwrite via pressing YES.

I installed Forgotten Battles 2.0 ,it seemed to install...the menu has Forgotten Battles 2.0 on it, but no new scenarios showed up in the game.
I ended up downloanding them separtly, installed them as usual, and they play fine. Just a littler concerned because I assumed some were included in the Forgotten Battles download.
