Here's the next post I make......... it's got a date/time almost 5 weeks later. This is that many hits in about 5 weeks. Thanks all you guys.

Larry,
Your math is a little off, unless I'm reading this wrong...
May is month 5 September is month 9. I'm roughly figuring 4 weeks per month and we are probably over 16 weeks not 5! But I'm still pretty awed by the numbers anyway!

Of course you're right.....I don't know what I was thinking. That'll make it about 90 hits per day.........still a respectable figure.

witpqs,

Yes you just hit a nerve - aren't the boot sectors in the CMD line and date changed is the last thing in the line?

Thats what I liked about Symantec - it records any changes to both the programs and the CMD/.exe files. I was able to track down the suspicious files pretty quickly. Once the backup files from the 23rd were restored, the two files stuck out.

The biggest challenge was getting into the Windows Vista. Safe mode didn't work because the hacker somehow got the setup files and the load wasn't completing before the screen showed up.

I'm pretty beat and I am having trouble being clear here -even to myself... LOL If I dont make sense I apologize, I'll try again tomorrow.
Jim

I have no idea. I certainly am not saying that the hack you got hit with did those things, just making sure you know they are possibilities in case that helps you, either in this instance or a future one. Heck, it's even been shown they can hide viruses in the flash memory on components like the video card - crikey! I've not heard of that being done in the wild yet.

Thanks again witpqs,

I understand your point and appreciate it. I went to bed around 1:30a after getting both turns done, then rechecking everything.

I got up at 8:30a and reread everything (and did Symantec customer survey questionaire...) It all seems OK... so far. what bothers me is that we never found the delivery vehicle. I was in my e-mail when the site hit me, but didn't have any open e-mails and e-mail scanning is on for both antiviruses. Maybe it was a time -bomb hack?

We did find 2 files in the exe.startup which we copied to Symantec and then deleted. Thats what makes your observation so unsettling and probably accurate too!

It's hard to say. For sure check that all the software on your PC that either can be accessed directly from the Internet or that you use with the Internet in any way is fully patched (up to date). There is a category of exploits called 'drive-by exploits' wherein you merely visit a web site - just load a page - and they can hack you. Like many hacks those depend on some flaw/weakness in the software involved (browser, etc.). Like others these can be undiscovered by the good guys ('zero-day'). But the place to start is to make certain that all your stuff is up to date. BTW the web sites involved in drive-bys are often innocent in that they were hacked and the owners/operators are unaware of the infection.

There are enormous numbers of PCs that get infected because various software (including the OS) was never updated. Literally viruses from a decade ago still infect machines out there. It's amazing but true. For someone like you who is careful, the issue is to stay as current as possible so that you benefit from all the fixes that have been made.

Very true statements, Yes I do, Yes I did, Yes I did again last night!

I've done everything I can think of, it will have to play itself out - if it happens again I will wipe the drive and restore from backup.

Thanks for everything!

Edit: I am posting a copy of PC Pitstops Exterminate scan - it doesnt find any major malware problems either.

I'm still going through my moves for Rob's game but I've run into a situation where it might be of interest to Jim and / or my readers:
I've run a TF up to adjacent to the target hex and I've turned on "full speed" setting so as to get as much troops and supplies on the
beach and get the ships out of gun range as soon as possible so that they don't get shot at at all, if possible and I intend to turn it
back to missiion speed after the ships are headed out of immediate danger, sometime next turn perhaps or a soon subsequent turn.
I'll have to keep these guys in mind to switch the speed setting ( and I can't forget to switch the speed for very long because these guys are out where the Allied subs roam ) so I'll have to reconnect him w/ his escort at the same time as soon as possible after the unload.

EDIT: Sound Track for this next paragraph...click this line

This is the first time I've tried this technique and I don't remember any human AAR opponent trying this, full-speeding the ships this way
during the emergency unload across the beach during the deep of night working under searchlight(s) and the crash of the surf is the
loudest noise allowed with the itchy feeling you get when the cross-hairs reach the base of your throat on the back-side of your head
Again And again, fighting down urges to run and hide to survive.Because deep down inside you sometimes feel like you're not as
good as the next man and your number might come up real soon now.....living each day as if it were your last and maybe after your
dead you might know the truth at last. All the big bigger and biggest questions get answered. Maybe. Maybe not.........maybe I'll just
be dead.

That kind of situation.

This is the arrangement as it is now: I've split off the escort because he's 11 knots max and the transports are something like 17 knots
so it made sense to take him off for now and park him along the return path of the TF so as to start to follow and then re-join the
transports after the emergency drop-off. First escort, the PB, then the escortee's.

The sound track for this next paragraph...click this line

One act into a three-act play at it were. Part of the eternal dance of war. Participants in a process that's been going on for as long as
there was a different tribe. As if disease, poverty, catastrophic desolation as a daily possibility, as if these aren't enough to distroy
human society there was war to cap it off. Take care of the rest as it were. No one gets a free ride....it's tough for everybody. A part of
reality we'd rather not know about all day long everyday. That's why alcohol was invented We discovered that it gave you a different
ride. Took some of the pain away for awhile. And we've been looking for escapes as long as there have been people. Just to exist has it's own kind of pain when you actually stop to figure it all out. Something having to do with Compassion and Empthy and being
good. There are some parts about truth that are better not known. Until you're ready to handle the responsibility that comes with just
knowing something that's true. If there's something about the situation that might engender pain in another, it's often up to you to
Act upon that knowledge to prevent that pain. To actually do something. Not knowing what to do is frustrating. It's trying to do some-
thing unpopular that is really hard. Your efforts are resisted and ridiculed and not even considered. At least you tried.

That kind of situation.

I'm going through my moves for Rob's game still but it just occured to me that I've lived long enough now to see how it might be possible
for me to be a resurrected reincarnate person and could have been the captain of the ship depicted in this image. Or maybe I've
lived different lives many times and now I'm pretending to be some old guy in a trailer park on the outskirts of Tucson playing WITP-AE
and thinking about ship boat captains.

That kind of situation

Okie dokie.......it's 08:50 Monday 10-01-2012 and I'm finally done with my moves for Rob and I'm laying into my moves for Jim:
Here's the latest combat results:

This is the first of several encounters that CL Sumatra has with Jap ships. This picture is the morning after the night-time encounter
but you get the point.

It appears that operation SKIDDING CAR Two is over because the Allied planes appear to be gone from Wenchow. So the Jap planes
can concentrate on some other target.

Here's another raid by the Japs and there was only one damaged plane but there was no Allied damage listed which leads me to
believe that there was none and maybe these raids are a waste. But on the other hand they buck up the morale of the men down
there so since I'm not losing very many planes I'll keep going with the raids to help the men on the ground. Plus it's good training for
the pilots.

Here's another one of those raids on the 22nd Indian Brigade that nets a few ground soldiers and damages a plane or two and they
are dropping those 500 lb hard-bombs instead of the daisy cutters that might do some good. But the ground commander is thankful
for the help he IS getting after all, and he says to the commander of the flight "....Wow You don't know all the good you're doing".
To which the pilot had to agree......he really DIDN'T know all the good he was doing.

Here's where a flight of 9 Lilly's tried to raid the home base ( it appears ) of the AVG. They got chewed up pretty good. I think I'll
stand them down for a day or two to let them recover from this drama. A day off as it were.

EDIT: I found one unit of Lilly's that were already on stand-down...so I assigned them a ground mission instead because their
morale was high and the fatigue hadn't even hit the lowest peg on the gauge yet.

And then there was a ground attack by some Sonia's at Manila. They had to contend with some P-40's and got chewed up but not
so badly. And then they bombed from 5,000 feet. No Allied damage was listed so I guess there was none. D'oh.

And then some 10 Allied bombers attacked me and I shot down 2 of them. About 6 were damaged I'm guessing.

Location code named Mole Man got hit again. I've finally decided that Mole Man needs some Nate's for CAP and I've assigned about
40 of them for that duty. I've got some AF dudes on the road and they should be there within a week I'm hoping some of those Nates
will still be flyable at the end of that week. If not those AF dudes will have some workload on their hands. I may have to send a 2nd
AF dudes unit just in case.

And then I tried another raid on the AVG base in China and the losses weren't so bad. Still not enough damage done to have paid so
much for the mission.
