One of these days I'll have to post the pictures from my trip to the Constitution/Cassin Young.

One more pic of the New Hampshire. Apparently she was fully armed at one time.

The main battery on the top deck? Doesnt that do unfortunate things to seakeeping ability?

I'm particularly impressed by the holes in the tank treads -- presumably to reduce drag, and improve aerodynamics in flight.

Speed holes.

Would have had a rear spoiler too if they knew what they were about.

They're used to counteract listing during fast turns.

Something about that picture just screams asbestos.

The title says what's the first ship. So who were the 4 others, and when? Hint, the last one (far left) was the "real" subject of a "fake" book.

Serious extra credit points for anyone who can say why this painting was so important. And serious JWE extra credit points for anyone who can say who was commanding the various ships.

[ed] Allyson Felix is looking good, yeah?

I love Geoff Hunt's work. In fact, my then fiance got me a reproduction of his Temeraire painting and I would like to get more when we have enough room to set one room aside for a home office/library.

As for the "real" subject, if I'm right about what you're referring to, Cochrane's Speedy was renamed Sophie for that one.

Yep.

Couldn't make Cochrane's career into a book, noboby would believe it.

Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin series is a great read for anyone interested in that time period.

Wow, at that dive angle, he'd barely need to deploy his brakes... Artistic license.

Thats probably true.

Aubrey was based on several characters but Cochrane seems to be the primary one, although there is quite a bit of Host there as well as some other people.

One of my favorite reads of all time!

I had forced myself through 2 1/2 of the first Hornblower books and I'm ashamed to say could not force myself to go on. Ashamed because its such a pillar of the genre and one of my favorite scifi universes, Honorverse, is based squarely on Hornblower by the authors frank admission. But I just could not bring myself to love his continual whining and self doubt. It may, in some cases, be very human, but its just no fun to read about, especially when it occupies more space in the books than the action.

I read the first book of the Bolitho series at Simon's recommendation and liked it quite a bit but the ending was so bad and so "Hollywood" that I didnt return for the second book. If anything, it made me appreciate PoBs masterful way of never overplaying anything, sneaking the most significant events in under the radar and generally not bludgeoning his readers in the head with the plotlines.

I have heard some good feedback about the Kydd series. Has anyone read it?
