INTELLIGENCE REPORT

DATE: 15 JUNE 1942

FROM: COMBINED FLEET

TO: GHQ HQ

TEXT:
The enemy fleet composed of at least six aircraft carriers accompanied by many battleships and/or heavy cruisers. The enemy fleet most likely refuelled at Diego Garcia after attacking the 25th Army transportation TF in early June. Then it headed south and southeast to its present position.
The destruction of KB3 (CVE HOSHO, CS MIZUHO and one DD) was most regrettable.

The enemy´s intention of this major fleet movement can be interpreted in several ways. Firstly, it is very unlikely that the enemy is only responding to KB3 movements in order to hunt down a single small CVE. Instead, the enemy can be assumed to have one of the four following intensions:

1) REDEPLOYING THE FLEET TO THE PACFIC VIA SOUTHERN AUSTRALIA
Somewhat likely – however, this also means that the enemy will surrender any chance to interdict shipping Singapore-Rangoon.

2) RAIDING THE SRA EAST OF JAVA
Likely – this is very much in line with earlier enemy actions.

3) MEETING AND ESCORTING A MAJOR TROOP CONVOY FROM PERTH TO INDIA
Likely –the entire fleet for this operation might indicate a major transportation of two-three enemy divisions. Radio intercepts from Perth does indicate a major concentration of shipping.

4) SUPPORTING INVASION FROM PERTH TO SRA EAST OF JAVA
Somewhat likely – this might however be a severe reckless action at this stage since almost all of our battleships and heavy cruisers are concentrated in the SRA area.

In conclusion, the enemy fleet is likely to meet up with a major transportation force near Perth and support the transportation of that force to India. The enemy might also launch raids in the eastern SRA in conjunction with this transportation. This means an opportunity to begin shipping troops and supplies from Singapore to Rangoon and Chittagong.
