Soulblazer needs to send the file back so I can finish my end. There were 8 separate sorties: ,3rd,4th,5th7th & 8th were from the Japanese with only the 1st, 2nd and 6th from the US. I find this interesting. In the second attack the Junyo, Zuikaku, and Hiryu all took 2 bomb hits each, the Akagi took 3 bomb hits. In the 6 th attack,Zuikaku took an additional3 bomb hits and Akagi 1 bomb hit. So all my carriers were damaged to some extent. I have to review the turn again to find out the final damage but no Japanese carrier was sunk in this turn. My hits against the US carriers occurred in the 3rd attack,4th attack and 5th attack( the 7th attack only had the Astoria take a torpedo).
Total Japanese planes destroyed/damaged out of a total of 213 attacking planes: A6M2 - 39/10
A6M3 - 15/1
Vals - 29/12
Kates- 28/28
I had lost 50% of my air complement. Zuikaku is most certainly heavily damaged and Akagi is on fire. In the sixth attack I could only field 2 fighters on cap and the last two attacks on the US carriers had no escorts at all. I had 91 zeros and 54 of those were destroyed, in other words my 50% escort was shot down. Still i find the Japanese a little better off in that they were able to launch more attacks but the US attacks were able to damage all my carriers while it still has two undamaged. I think the game is balanced.

-I´m not sure....because there will be a follow up battle.
-If Akagi is crippled, then the Japanese will lose, since
-they lost 50% of their planes, against much less US
-losses, their biggest carriers are crippled and the USN
-still has 2 fully operational carriers to pursue their
-enemies. I think the US will achieve a big victory.
-Try to run next turn.

I don't see a need to do that. Drex did'nt post the stats on his planes before the battle that I did, but I strongly suspect, given his greater air losses to Japan in the days before this test battle, that my planes are better led, better experienced, and less fatiqued, hence the edge to me in these carrier battles. ALso, by this point in the game (October 1942), the US develops a slight edge, all things being equal -- and this was equal.

Besides, I don't see anyone else complaing about this. Air combat is being looked at for the next patch, as described in the 'I Give Up!' and 'Can You Say Open Beta?' threads, so perhaps you should just wait till the next patch, run your own tests, make a new thread if you still see a problem, and ask others to also test.

-Just a question. After seeing the results of the battle,
-(don´t consider Drex reports), would you:
1-Move your carriers to pursue the crippled enemy?
2-Retreat your carriers?
-And off course, I will start to do my own tests, including
-a replay of my disastrous battle. However, it´s difficult
-to see a situation like yours, aka, a CV battle like yours
-can take a month to happen, so when we have this
-opportunity..... I´m just saying that the battle you
-simulated isn´t finished, so you can´t say it was equal

Well, if Drex wants to continue it, that's fine with me. He does'nt need me for that anyway. :)

And what would I do in a real game? I'd probaly stay and fight. I would'nt know how much damage had been done to the Japs, of course, but I'd have to say looking at the carriers being sunk I'd have my two unttouched carriers try to fight one more day and launch another strike to see if I can take a Japanese carrier with me. They are testing carrier battles right now with the new patch in the beta thread, though. :)

The situation was not exactly the situation we played out, but very close.

I ran each a couple more times, but failed to save the combat results file and/or list the air losses. Only one resulted in no damage to US carriers with 2 IJN CVs damaged (Kaga 33/Zuikaku 63), and one with no damage to the IJN carriers with2 USN Cvs damaged (Enterprise 26/ Yorktown 3).

Test 3 averaged much more Zero losses than the first two tests. I would attribute that in part to the fatigue difference, since nothing else significant changed.

IJN aircraft losses averaged higher because of USN ability to land and operate carrier aircraft from damaged carriers at Luganville. Often subsequent(afternoon impulse) strikes were carried out from Luganville with aircraft originaly based on carriers.

This tended to even out results, and if the USN performed well in the morning, then the advantage was magnified in the afternoon impulse. If the USN performed poorly, they still got strikes in the afternoon. On the other hand, if the IJN did poorly in the morning, the afternoon impulse turned into a disaster.

Another factor was the additional USN TFs in the area. They tended to draw off strikes that otherwise would be directed at the USN CVs. The less strikes drawn off, the worse the USN CVs seemed to fare. This makes sense, as the TF commander has more targets to consider and has to make decisions about which target(s) to hit, sometimes resulting in strikes going after less than prime targets. Not to mention that the timimg of the spotting reports would affect the decisions as well.

Without the proximity of Luganville and other TFs in the area, the IJN force would beat the USN handily almost all the time. These significantly equalized the sides and made the difference in the outcome of this engagement.

-But no test resulted in 6 Japanese CV´s with heavy damage vs
-2 USN CV´s with small damage. It looks like I just had bad luck
-or the AI settings influenced the results. I see no bias towards
-US in the game engine here, and maybe, it was only a worst
-case result.

Only other things not considered in my tests

- US Avg exp for fighters 10 less than in our example
- 1 sqn still had F4F-3s
- This one only 1 day, did not consider follow up
- I did not know the make up of your TF, so guessed. Flak value of your actual TF may have varied significantly.
- Did not factor in any LBA bombers.
- This turn was the first under the new patch

I am not revealing the exact nature of my damage, for obvious reasons.

But I still believe that it was a worse case scenario. There were a couple examples in my test reults where the follow on damage would probably get much worse for the IJN, as the IJN airpower decreases with carrier damage, and the USN aircraft just move Luganville and keep up the fight. A couple of those would have ended up with some bad loses for the IJN.

-On the other hand any Japanese CV able to make more than
-15 knots can be outside your LBA AF in the following day
-(remember that the Air strikes are only made after the naval
-moves, so a retiring TF will be able to make 300 miles in a
-day moving at 15knots). Of course, you can caught very
-dmaged ships (less than 10 knots) with your surface ships.
-In the majority of scenarios you simulated, your carriers
-would be unable to pursue IJN ones. I think the most
-probable outcomes would be:

1-Zuiho sinks
USN unable to pursue
Minor IJN victory
1a-IJN retreats
Draw
1b-Shokaku and Zuiho sinks
Minor USN victory
2-IJN retreats
Major IJN victory
3-IJN retreats
USN unable to pursue
Draw
3a-IJN retreats
USN unable to pursue
Minor IJN victory
3b-IJN retreats
Draw
-So in 7 simulations there would be 3 IJN victories
-3 Draws and 1 USN defeat
-Well, I´m satisfied with this, since you proved there
-is no bias in v2.11, which is the most important.
-I will do some tests in a statistical software, using
-the tutorial scenario, to verify if there is a trouble
-with AI settings (first test suggests there isn´t).

your fatigue for your fighters is very high. I have found that if fatigue is above 30 then CAP is greatly nullified (go and test it, I have and there is a marked difference between CAP flying with 0 fatigue and that with fatigue above 30. Your oponents fatigue was below 30 but still high, but 30 seems to be the key.

Also you carrier force reacted to his, how many Oportunity points did you lose while moving. As the IJN its to your advantage to not move as you have the longer range. Also your opponent was flying at 15000 ft and your CAP was set to 10000ft. This means all you CAP had to engage from below and a fair few would have got past your CAP before they could engage.

Doomed Mantis has a very valid point that I did not consider in running these tests, which is how far did the IJN TF move total due to Yamaguchi's reacting.

All my tests had the IJN TF moving 10 hexes (5/5) so they had more than adequate OPS points to launch strikes.

I am running tests again, with the first test the normal move, and the second a reaction (not sure how to structure this one)

Curious to see the outcome.

Oh, afenelon, can you tell me how far the TF moved as part of movement and reaction so I can use that as part of my test?

Reults attached.

As with previous tests, the results generally favored the IJN, although the results indicate that the IJN took heavier percentage of fighter losses than the USN than in the previous tests. On average 33% more, with several over 50% more than the USN.

As Doomed Mantis pointed out, I believe that is mainly a function of the fatigue difference (possibly the altitude as well).

Of the tests, the most interesting was the ninth run, where both sides sent maximum number of strikes(no weather problems), yet no carriers were damaged on either side. The only ships damaged were one cruiser per side.

I believe this reinforces the assertion that the IJN will win this engagement outright 40% of the time, draw 50% of the time, and lose 10% of the time. (although none of my tests resulted in a decisive USN victory, I believe it is possible, just very unlikely)

The outcomes varied from heavy damage to no damage with maximum airstrikes. Combinations of these results indicate that the whole sprectrum of outcomes could occur, from decisive IJN to decisive USN.

-Well, IT WAS POSSIBLE (this particular result would happen
-in, maybe, 1% of the cases, which made me suspect something
-was wrong)....to verify this we should make, many...many

-I´m happy to know there is no bias in the game engine. I
-think the tests you made were enough to prove that. I think
-I developed a way to test the isolated influence of each
-isolated variable in a Carrier combat, using SPSS spreadsheets.
-But it takes too time, and many players ruiing the same
-tests are needed. I can explain more if you´re interested.

I could do the same using SPlus, but like you said, it would require a large number of tests.

You could run a small test and still acquire enough data to draw some basic inferences as to the effects of different factors/variables.

-But given the wide range of possible outcome you can
-get the wrong inference. Anyway, the tests I´m doing
