Not exactly. If there are insufficient torpedoes left for the next strike to ALL be equipped with torpedoes, there is a chance that they will A) Have a small subunit rearm with torpedoes to completely exhaust stores and B) automatically rearm the balance of TBs left with bombs for a separate strike package.

I believe that this is determined by airgroup commander experience and a random roll.

It doesn't. It's in red with supply issues (if there's not enough to arm all available striking planes) or if it's set to something (e.g., port attack) that will not use a torpedo. Exception: Pearl Harbor attack on turn one.

Status: offline 		Okay you know what it was, I think it might be the tendency of the Kate to prefer the 800kg bomb in a port attack mission.

I did three straight days of pearl harbor and none of my carriers had used all their torpedoes. I wish there was a way to force the use of certain ordinance. Apparently sometimes Kates use 2x250kg bombs instead of the 1x800kg which would be bad. If they're going to use bombs I want them to at least use one with a punch!

Puhis you are right if average XP of pilots is above 70 they will use 800Kg in port attack.
And for torpedo use I read somewhere that this will depend from number of ships in port. More ships more likely that bombers will use torpedo

-Also, I am transferring squadrons to my carriers on Dec. 7th. Do I want to spend the PP to change these squadrons to Independent command? Or does it not matter that I will have some squadrons operating on my KB that are under the command of the 21st Air Flotilla? I'm under the impression units get a bonus if they are within proximity to their HQ. Does this apply to carrier airgroups, and if so does that mean that I want my Independent-attached groups assigned to a real HQ?

-I am failing to notice how the B5N2 Kate is an upgrade to the B5M1 Mabel. The Kate has higher endurance and lower service rating, but lower maneuver and cruise speed. What is the point of upgrading to the Kate?

-Service rating: what does it mean? I assume it increases the time to fix damaged aircraft?

-Is it possible to play the Ironman scenario as Japan or will the game crash? I assume there must be some problem with the scenario because I can't find an AAR of it.

Usually not, because TBs use torpedoes mainly on naval attack, and 800 kg bombs on port attack. So most probable combination would be 20 x 800 kg or 20 x 2x250 kg on port attack, and 6 torpedoes and 2x250 kg bombs on naval attack.

I think it doesn't matter, carrier airgroups operate under TF commander.

I think Mabel and Kate are pretty equal planes. Historically Kate was main TB, Mabel didn't make to mass production. Personally I think endurance is more important than cruise speed.

-I am running some test battles where I send in a fleet of 5BB, 2CB, 1CL, and 5DD against the enemy starting Enterprise fleet of 1CV, 3CA, and I think 6 DD. I have ran this battle four times, and only ONCE did my battleships (including Yamato and Musashi) succeed in sinking the Enterprise! What gives? They seem to target the enemy CA heavily but mostly ignore the CV. Any way to encourage them to hit the CV?

Yes. Other ships can fire incoming planes too.

Carrier TF always tries to avoid surface combat, Enterprise is faster than japanese BBs, and escorts are screening the most valuable ship. It's very hard to sink CVs with surface ships, as it should.

Status: offline 		Okay, so are you saying that even if my BB is firing at the enemy CV "at 10,000 yards" it's actually not that close(?) The carrier is actually farther away than the rest of the enemy fleet, running away(?)

What does "screening" mean exactly. I think I noticed that in the battle text, the cruisers were doing this. Does this mean they're throwing up smoke?

Thanks for any answers :)

Oh and one more question, if I were attacking the carrier with faster warships, would they perform better in-battle as far as hunting and sinking the carrier? I'm not sure if speed makes a difference in battle or only on the map. I'm still a bit shocked that five battleships can't sink a single carrier!

I think you are trying to do something that historically never happened. You can try to do that, but it's not very effective way to deal with fast carriers. I've once sunk one allied CV with battleships. One lucky night time battle. Usually carriers stay away from surface battle.

It seems that every newbie is doing the same mistake, they think that big SCTFs are better. You should try small compact TF. Maybe just 2 BBs and escorts. No more than 8-10 ships, and good and aggressive commander.

Status: offline 		Right, well I have Tanaka commanding and I figured that the hard part is getting into the surface battle into the first place. It seems that you have to guide your task force into the exact right hex, even if you have react set to 6. But I figured once the surface battle starts the carrier would be screwed! After all it does say they are firing from as close as 9000 yards.

And I know there are some AARs that show considerable success attacking the KB with PH surface units on Dec. 8. (heavily damaged Japanese CVs).

Somehow I can't achieve with battleships what others can achieve with bloodthirsty destroyers.

You definitely DO NOT have to guide a TF to the exact hex in order to intercept an enemy TF for a surface battle.


Second, sometimes an intercept is made, but doesn't work out. Like you are describing the prey gets away.

Other times, however, a carrier force gets smacked mightily in such a surface intercept.

I'm going to see if I can find some battles to post for you, but you can find plenty of them in AARs, including intercepts of the KB as it stays around Hawaii past the first day. I've written of carrier intercept in my own AARs and I've seen other. And, in a 2x2 game we have going with no formal AARs we have had several such intercepts. One of them was so significant that our opponents wrote a mini-AAR thread on it. That one involved battleships catching USN carriers.

Bear in mind that battleships are both less numerous and less maneuverable than destroyers and cruisers, so that might affect the numbers of intercept examples.

Meanwhile, here is an article I wrote on surface intercepts a while back, maybe 1 to 1 1/2 years ago. It's also been posted to the AE Wiki.

Surface Intercepts

There are two facets to achieving intercepts with surface forces. One is Intel and its influence on the choices made. The other is the mechanics in setting up and executing the intercept. Both are important and each must be given adequate attention for positive results. Obviously many of the considerations discussed here pertain to intercepts conducted by carrier aircraft.

At first it might look like a lot of material, but most of it you will do automatically with hardly a thought. It just takes a bunch of words to describe things.

Intel

Where can an intercept be achieved? What can be intercepted? What enemy forces might interfere? Will surprise be achieved? Is the enemy aware of the forces making the attempt? What is the geometry and terrain involved? How many and what routes for attack are available? How many and what routes for escape are available? What about ports for a) rearming, b) emergency repairs, and c) extensive repairs? Are replenishment TFs available at sea for emergency refueling after extended high-speed escape runs?

Using your knowledge of the overall situation and any SigInt judged reliable, consider where the enemy is likely to send forces that should be intercepted. What are the likely next invasion targets considering enemy strategy to date? What areas likely need resupply, evacuation, reinforcement? Identify which areas can be targeted for intercepts.

What scouting assets do you have to cover the target area and the approaches to it? Maximize your search coverage, bringing in more assets if you can.

What scouting assets and locations does the enemy have? Minimize them if you can! Determine where the enemy can likely see and where he likely can not see.

Mechanics

In choosing your force composition, consider: TF and ships commanders' stats; damage to ships (can increase the chances of ships being spotted and reduce ships' speed); speed of the overall TF is reduced to the slowest ship; presence of float planes for scouting the prey (if enough are available, put some on night duty); combat capability of the ships (main guns, torpedoes, AA and ASW for protection); splitting up your available combat ships into multiple TFs for a) more effectively sized TFs, b) covering multiple avenues of approach, c) covering multiple possible target areas, and d) rotating TFs into action to maintain coverage while some TFs replenish.

Choose locations (or areas) where each of your TFs will lie in wait. Prefer areas that are where the enemy will not see you. Distance from his search bases is important. Also critical is distance from the intended area of intercept. How close a TF needs to be is dependent upon the geometry, meaning where will you sight the prey, how long will it take the prey to reach the target area, and how long will it take your force to reach the target area from the waiting area.

The actual game orders to give the intercept forces are critical but easy as long as you don't mix the wrong things. It is important to remember that the "Remain on Station" order overrides any reaction setting order. In other words, TFs ordered to "Remain on Station" will not "React"! You should only use remain on station orders when you specifically do not want your force to react.

The most useful order is the maximum reaction range. Set this to what you deem appropriate, which - maybe surprisingly - should not always be "6". Consider the TFs speed. A TF with many 21 knot battleships might enter the daylight phase in a very vulnerable position if it reacts a full 6 hexes to engage in combat. Be advised also that a TF can (and they sometimes do) react more than one time during the surface combat phases! This means that you can have a TF react 2 or 3 or 4 times as it chases and repeatedly engages a fleeing prey. Such a TF can wind up much closer to enemy air and other assets than you intended.

As noted above, remain on station orders are very limiting. That can make them the right orders in some situations, but most often they are the wrong order for executing the actual intercept. The choice is between "Retirement Allowed" and Patrol.

Retirement allowed orders will give you only one pass at making the intercept, and then the TF will route itself for its home port. There might be times when you want that, but most of the time the geometry if the environment will be less convenient. Reaction range settings do work with retirement allowed orders.

Setting a patrol is usually the best way to conduct an intercept. Reaction range settings do work with patrol orders.

Note that when surface TFs are some distance away from the beginning hex of their patrol zone, they will move faster than cruise speed and will accumulate routine damage at a higher rate. Unless time is short, moving to the waiting area is best accomplished with remain on station orders, which you later change to patrol orders when the time is right.

The exact patrol orders you give depend on the situation. If the prey is well inside enemy air search range, then wait until they are approaching the target area. On the turn you expect to intercept, give your TF patrol orders at the target area (the target area might be more than 1 hex), making certain to also give a maximum reaction range. Ensure that the combination of the patrol zone (even if a single hex) and the reaction range gives your TF a good chance to intercept. After the intercept it is likely that your TF will "retire" toward its home port, so set its home port to somewhere in the direction you want them to escape. There is also a small chance that your TF will not retire, if it has plenty of ammo remaining and does not perceive a great air threat, etc. That's a risk you take.

If the prey is near the edge of the enemy's air search range then you can try another technique. As before, set a reaction range that you feel is appropriate. Set a patrol zone as follows. Look at the cruise speed of the TF in hexes. Set the first hex of the patrol to be where you expect/want to intercept the prey. Set the second hex of the patrol zone back toward the waiting area, outside of enemy air search range. Make certain that the second hex of the patrol zone is at least as far of the TF can travel on cruise speed in one movement phase. If the intercept does not occur you might want to adjust the patrol zone on the following turn so that your TF goes in for the intercept during the (first) night movement phase and comes back out during the (second) day movement phase.

i'm gonna second what Puhis said, large SurfTFs can be unwieldy in battle, & have a greater chance of suffering a collision.

in addition (this advice is fathered on some posts by Nemo) your TF composition should have ships of similar (if not identical) armament performance - better to have 2 8" CAs that have the same MA guns, rather than an 8" CA & a 6" CL in your TF. i try to keep my TFs composed of class-sisters for each combatant type.

But the only options I see available are to increase production (double it) or end production. How do you get a factory producing 12 Zeroes to produce 30? I can only get it to produce either 24 or 48.

Also it seems every time I click expand I have just made a permanent change and cannot undo a mistake by leaving the production window.

You can increase them in the industry screen. Also this rule of 30 applies to R&D and not production.
