Actually, I don't know about other players, but I can quite easily make a difference between a planet defended by 50 units and one defended by 500. I can't say for 5000 though, the highest I've seen in a game was around 1500.

Having said that, I can perfectly understand that it can be frustrating at high unit numbers (ie: above 1k) where it's no longer possible to see a real difference. But to be honest, if it's replaced by a simplistic 'light' or 'heavy', or 50-100, 100-500 and >1000, it won't make much of a difference to me... not much more than the current system, which suits me.

I think the folks wanting it to be clearer are wanting it that way more for aesthetics than wanting to know actual numbers. You could even have a simple 'Light' or 'Heavy' icon for troop level displays.

Well, being interested in the military issues, it would be useful to have some kind of estimate of the firepower sitting on a planet and whether to reinforce or not...

@algoritm
I take your point. Personally I would prefer a readable and accurate troop count. But regardless, the current display is offensive to me. I am going to go break something now.

Could be that they ran into problems in the beta testing, and honestly I'd rather have it done right than to have it done fast.

There might be issues with the transition of Windows platforms. From Win7 to Win8 for instance.
Just a thought.

I'll be posting some news before the end of October. Elliot and I have been working our butts off.

Well, while I realize that you need it to work on the windows 8 platform, I myself won't be going to windows 8. No need for it really, what I've got works fine...since I use a big ol' clunky desktop. The touchscreen stuff is useless for me, I can't reach my screen from where I sit at my desk (a big screen too close to you is bad on the eyes).

I'm one of those that is about to by a couple extra copies of Win 7 in case I ever need them.

Keep up the good work guys. I don't think you have to rush though, most of us here just bark, we're not rabid.

Also, working your butts off, doesn't that make it hard to sit?

Yeah, yeah, bad joke I know.

I use XP as well still Darkspire. But our testing team must test ALL of the platforms that Elliot will
list that the game will run on. WinXP SP3, Vista (Yuck!) Win7 and Win8. must all be tested due to
the many idiosyncrasy's between them all ( Single core, Dual Core, Quad Core, DirectX 10 & 11, I
could go on...).

Too bad there are no PERFECT programmers out there in 4X games (although Elliot comes close)

THAT you have been hard at work is the announcement I wanted to hear.

I'm sure good things come to those of us who wait...

Just one caveat to my comment above - I'll post more info before November, as long as we have electricity and internet here after Hurricane Sandy passes through.

But whatever happens, save the Distant Worlds stuff!!!

j/k - all the best, and batten down the hatches. And make sure that DS stuff is safe as soon as you are sure all the people are.

Yeah, it's a biggie. Already wet and windy here (NYC) and the storm is still 12 hours or more out. And I live a block and a half from the mandatory evacuation zone!
