And now for something completely different, a blast from the past: final moments of the German push to Leningrad in 1941, with new map graphics:

...and a winter raid to plunder Kalinin (Torzhok was also raided); those raids (and also poor leaders as well as loss of good units in the Rzhev encirclement) were responsible for 18 months long forced pause to rebuild Kalinin Front into a fighting force.

On the screen above you can see a very important rail line (through Rossosh) retaken by the Red Army. Without it all units between southern half and northern half of the front have to go via Stalingrad and that's a very long detour.

I thought Crimea would be worth something, but because of the unconnected rail issue it was only a truck hog. Still, they have been able to draw a significant number of German divisions including some Panzer ones from the main front.

My armament pool was at 346 030 on 10th June, floated around 250 000 for the entire summer and dropped like crazy when the new Soviet rifle squads entered production (-100k in the first September turn, in late September I had only 9k left).

Sorry for belated answer. I didn't lose much, though I made two costly mistakes due to not knowing the rules at start. I posted some stats in another thread, I believe I have 70% HI, 80% ARM and 100% VEH. The problem was caused by new rifle squad model and Germans retreating along the front, which put a lot of units out of ZOC (increasing their chance to upgrade squads). My mech corps are at 40% rifle squads now, but ARM pool is back to 120k.

Meanwhile, Axis build tank like crazy now (late October).

Yes a tactic I use is to start withdrawing around T-118, the 4 turns before Mud hits.

It causes an arm pt crunch and when mud hits T-122 with lines far from railheads causes allot of trucks to be burnt up.

This will weaken SHC and give GHC some time to slow SHC advances in early summer.

Anything to buy time.

4th Tank Army in action :) Of course the initial plans were more ambitious than that, but they failed to materialize, so I had to be content with "scraps" (3 divisions including the prestigious 1st Infantry Division of the I Corps). For too long the northern forces remained without assistance from Panzer Divisions (all Axis mobile forces at that point were south of Smolensk) and I was eager to exploit that.

What's wrong about "divisions staying until the end"?

edit: your infantry divisions "upgrade", but your panzer divisions upgrade (their upgrade is actually good as it allows for faster tank replacement due to matching slots for in-production tanks).

neat move ... maybe when mud lifts you can dismantle the northern flank of the axis defense lines?

This is a secondary front, because of difficult terrain there are little to none mobile forces (so no decisive battles). The real battle rages on the open terrain in the south. I try to advance here when it's required to shorten my overall front length. So if one front advances on Smolensk, then the next one has to advance on Velikiye Luki, so in turn the next one has to advance on Pskov :) I just give the boys there something to do in their spare time.

About 12th Guards Tank Corps: in a true Soviet fashion I have wasted this elite unit on a pointless attack (made hasty, while wanted deliberate) and it got badly mauled and is now left stranded alone in face of German panzers (not for cut off, but it will get beaten once again most probably and it's already at half of previous strength).

Easiest place to attack (from 4 sides). I was surprised it wasn't defended by at least 2 SS PzGr divisions, but a lonely footslogger division.

looks a lot like you are putting in sufficient pressure to force a lot of the German Pz/PzGr divisions into the front lines.

Rumanians alone are not enough, so they need some backing power. Also, in some clear terrain I saw some PzGr and Pz in the first line.

The AAR is a bit delayed (turn 129 now). Shall I continue it or will cpt flam resume his reports?
