Just mention the words "The Burnley Express" to any Australian cricket fan, and they will be bricking it.

Its not going to be 5-0, but its going to be a pretty comprehensive victory for the old country.

End Of The Merry Month Of May

Time marches on. Another month down finds the Allies in not bad shape, although there are pressure points on the map, particularly in a place I never expected, the high mountains exiting China.

1) Starting there, the lone Chinese corps arrived from the west (Paoshan), opening the hexside into the conflict hex the Big Stack is slowly moving into from the other side, just above Tsuyung. Ideally I would have waited to better coordinate arrivals, but I was afraid, with 25ish LCUs in the conflict hex, the Japanese would come west with some, boot it backwards, and I would lose the hexside. That may happen anyway, now. The battle was a rout for the Chinese LCU, which surrendered, but I now know what's in the stack. The BS is going to come on anyway--the supply situation demands it--but if it loses the battle there may be no retreat route open. Which would be a disaster in the short run. For now, Chungking will get a 1/3 strength corps by and by. And I have intel. The BS won't make the conflict hex for about three weeks and a lot could happen in that time.

Ground combat at 67,45 (near Tsuyung)

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 117297 troops, 1201 guns, 314 vehicles, Assault Value = 4224

Defending force 4175 troops, 33 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 137

Japanese adjusted assault: 7029

Allied adjusted defense: 1

Japanese assault odds: 7029 to 1

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), leaders(+), disruption(-), fatigue(-)
experience(-), supply(-)
Attacker: shock(+)

Japanese ground losses:
1030 casualties reported
Squads: 1 destroyed, 82 disabled

Allied ground losses:
5427 casualties reported

Guns lost 48 (48 destroyed, 0 disabled)

2nd RF Gun Battalion
11th Army

5th RF Gun Battalion

Defending units:
33rd Chinese Corps

2) At Chungking the Chinese put up a CAP of Lancers in a gamble the Sallys will come unescorted. Bad bet as sweeping Oscars arrive first. Three Lancers are lost.

3) 2E bombers hit Kendari TF unloading. CA Kako is showing heavy black smoke. One Oscar is shot down, but no hits on ships. The Allied CA Escort TF has a bit more system damage than I thought, but about the level of flooding a Long Lance usually deals. The third CA is nearly back to Soerbaja where slightly damaged CL and APD/DDs are ready for a second try if it presents itself.

4) On the Sumatra west coast Japan took vacant Benkoelen two days ago, and today the dot base to the east. There are now multiple ways open to march on PBang from the IO side. I suspect he is trying to take the base on the RR from Oosthaven where there is a light Allied garrison. I don't think any force coming is heavy enough to take this and hold it given how close PBang is. The US Army ID on the way is three days out of CT today. As naval activity around SW Sumatra is picking up I will need to escort this one in. Colombo has plenty of assets to do that.

A little north, search finds a TF I thought was a further landing force, but instead seems to be a barrier patrol. Attackers from PBang attack it twice, putting a 500lb SAP bomb into CL Kashima. The only other ship sighted is DD Minegumo. This bears watching. I suspect but do not know that right now Japan "feels" powerful in the IO and Bay of B. To my knowledge the USN injections have not been sighted. Wasp, North Carolina, and several CLAA and DDs arrive in nine days and right now will be sent to Asia.

5) Allied strat bombing mostly is ineffective. Two strikes on Balikpapan by B-17s chew up the CAP quite a bit but score no oil hits. Rangoon Manpower continue to live a charmed life as nothing gets through at night. Kweiyang takes 8 Manpower hits and 3190 Fires.

6) Rounding out the month, at Bataan the Allies bombard again, inflicting 91 casualties. Getting to June with the PI still unconquered (Cebu and several other mid-PI bases are still Allied too) was a goal. Against my usual practice I plan to haul some sub supplies into Bataan in the next two weeks.

A game-play aside, FWIW: I have six pilots in TRACOM. My understanding has always been that it takes a minimum of 20 to accelerate any pipeline nuggets. Today I got some Chinese pilots accelerated. May be a different piece of code, but still interesting.

Accelerated training for 9 Chinese pilots from month-cycle 10
Accelerated training for 3 Chinese pilots from month-cycle 9
Accelerated training for 7 Chinese pilots from month-cycle 7

I had a long debate with Alfred about rugby versus what he calls "gridiron" but we properly call "football." Rugby is rough, yeah. Football, at least the NFL variety, is much more so.

Having had to play Rugby at school, I have developed quite an intense dislike to it that has not mellowed over the years.

Football is probably the only worldwide sport that we have, and boy is it fun!

The standard rejoinder. The games are completely different in velocities, weight of the players, and the rules for helping own team while they are carrying, or, more often for injuries, catching a forward pass while extremely exposed in mid-air open to cross-tackles.

To be morose about it, look at the two games' fatality and paralysis numbers. To really understand the degree of energy in the collisions in an NFL game you have to attend in person. The audio on TV is toned down to disguise the degree of violence.

The biggest cause of head injuries specifically in the NFL is the helmets themselves.

Banning helmet to helmet contact is one thing, but doesn't address the root cause.

I think the future of football in America is bleak for roughly the same reason that hotel swimming pools no longer offer diving boards.

Helmet to helmet is against the rules, but it happens every game. A bigger cause of brain injury IMO is the full-body collisions themselves. Basic Newtonian physics when the brain keeps moving forward when the skull is already stopped.

The average NFL lineman is now over 330lbs I think. And they are not slow. They run FAST.

I agree. In 2050 football will be what boxing is now versus what boxing was in 1960. Parents increasingly won't let their sons play HS football and the supply chain will dry up.

If some would go back to baseball I'd be happy, but I could stand to see an explosion of lacrosse too. A great game.

I don't want to sidetrack this AAR too much, but properly addressing steroid and HGH use throughout the game would bring future linemen down in size.

(and yeah rugby has a serious doping problem as well...)

I'm glad I have a daughter so I don't have to face the prospect of HS football in her future.

Football is a victim of its own success and the siren call to human nature to excel. What began as a collegial game of roughly normal sized human beings at roughly normal speeds has, over a century, evolved into a frenetic excessively highspeed game in which ultra aggressive behemoths (even the "small" players) launch themselves at each other at top speeds. The danger factor has increased exponentially. I wouldn't want my kids to play the game. I marvel that anybody lets their kids play.

The NFL has pretty good programs for detection, but colleges less, and HS not really at all. The problem is in the HSes. It's not uncommon now for colleges to begin to recruit in 8th grade. My stepdaughter went to a Div 1 school on an athletic scholarship and they first contacted her in 10th grade, a decade ago. I have a friend whose son in 8th was visited by a recruiter for basketball.

To play in the NFL most guys start in elementary school. The weight training is 100% better than twenty years ago. There are the summer camps, the off-season conditioning, the club teams. My HS had three football coaches and all were full-time PE teachers. One big-time HS program near us has a staff of 11, including full-time weight coaches, indoor practice facility on Astroturf, whirlpools, massages, nutritionists, etc. Stuff most colleges didn't have in 1980.

All of this combines to get the NFL to a place the game and its rules were never designed to go. Just as the NBA outgrew Dr. Naismith's basket height a long time ago, so has the NFL outgrown a 100yd field and the current line of scrimmage rules. When I was a kid a big offensive lineman was 275. We have linebackers at that now. Dick Butkus went to the Hall of Fame playing at 245. The NFL is in nutso land now and I find myself less and less interested every year.

And more interested in baseball.

The "cheerleaders" (snort) are interesting, sure, but watch a Fox broadcast now. Every time they do a pan down the row a corporate logo will fill 80% of the screen covering up the view of the women. Compare to the shots from the 90s. The money won.

From the dim recesses of the attic I would say . . . Septin. I did not look it up.

Yes, he was very good in that movie. He was also very good in one of the "I Love Lucy" episodes. Lucy has a big crush on him, but does something embarrassing and mortifying. Then Ricky invited Holden to the apartment, so Lucy disguises herself using modeling clay (which ends up melting).

OK, that's not in the attic.

Holden was huge, and then he seemed to just fade away. Sort of like Gary Cooper. Don't know if it was age, drinking, or something else, but the studio system was about as relentless as the media-driven life spans we see today in movie stars.

Yeah, when they want more money than the box-office draw of the day, their acting days are limited.
Lots of competition to be idol-of-the-month, or back then, idol-of-the-decade.

June 1, 1942

Upgrade City

Mike's work schedule is needing lots of odd hours and overtime right now, so turns are a bit in fits and starts. We got one in today before we lost our power for several hours here. Over three inches of rain and 60+ MPH gusts. The summer that never was goes on in the northern plains.

1) June 1 opens hundreds of upgrades to the Allies, especially merchants finally getting some AA. About 75 ships go in on this first day. Two USN CVs as well. The 1942 upgrades are important for them, and I don't see a lot of need in the next few weeks for their services. If SNAGGLEPUSS goes it won't need them for sure.

2) S-36 sinks one of two PBs on ASW patrol near Donggala.

3) Night bombing fails everywhere. Bangkok is visited at 2000ft. and 5 of 6 B-25C are damaged. Day strat bombing is better as Medan loses 5 Oil, and Kweiyang's industry continues to burn with 11 Manpower hits and 8505 Fires. I have gone there many, many times now, and still there is no CAP. Yet there are large sweeps over bases with no Allied opposition day after day.

4) There is a lot of bombing all over the map by Japan amounting to the usual results. The Big Stack is hit pretty hard. Looking at the hexsides there (I am no expert on this part of the game to be sure) it seems my attempt to open one to the west has failed with the destruction of the lone Chinese corps yesterday. The BS is moving into the conflict hex with no retreat route. This will probably result in utter disaster, but they will at least severely damage the huge stack on the road east of Paoshan. There are only two LCU in Tsuyung, and I could march the BS to the city, but the 25-stack on the road could get there as fast and then there would be a city battle with the BS still having no retreat options. Better to forge ahead and see what happens.

5) Allies bombard at Bataan again. Two subs leave Soerbaja with a trickle of supply. More are inbound. All I want to do in the PI is hold the Japanese for a little while longer. Out of Java, out of Rabaul.
