September 3, 1942 Maybe Shoulda Waited 1) Attack on Moulmein, second day, didn't get good results. The disablements from Day 1 were concentrated in two LCUs, and they were on Reserve, but still I need to rest a bit now. Re-supply happened and all LUCs in attacking stack are in the green. Supply is still rushing over from Bombay where the Cape Town Express is still throwing mega-tons into the Indian railroad system. Rail to Calcutta, ship to Chittagong, and out into storm-ravaged Burma. Two more corps coming into Moulmein from adjacent eastern hex, and a tank unit from the north. Chiang Mai shows 32 LCUs now. Ground combat at Moulmein (55,55) Allied Deliberate attack Attacking force 85170 troops, 703 guns, 406 vehicles, Assault Value = 2978 Defending force 42270 troops, 392 guns, 206 vehicles, Assault Value = 1083 Allied adjusted assault: 1155 Japanese adjusted defense: 2205 Allied assault odds: 1 to 2 (fort level 3) Combat modifiers Defender: terrain(+), forts(+), preparation(-) Attacker: Japanese ground losses: 1654 casualties reported Squads: 26 destroyed, 100 disabled Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 21 disabled Engineers: 1 destroyed, 11 disabled Guns lost 19 (1 destroyed, 18 disabled) Vehicles lost 15 (1 destroyed, 14 disabled) Allied ground losses: 6321 casualties reported Squads: 40 destroyed, 973 disabled Non Combat: 2 destroyed, 72 disabled Engineers: 3 destroyed, 52 disabled Guns lost 22 (1 destroyed, 21 disabled) Assaulting units: 76th Chinese Corps 59th Chinese Corps 7th Australian Division 65th Chinese Corps 53rd Chinese Corps 71st Chinese Corps 20th Chinese Corps 82nd Chinese Corps 85th Chinese Corps 84th Chinese Corps 48th Chinese Corps 39th Indian Division 37th Chinese Corps 3rd New Chinese Corps 33rd Group Army 7th Group Army 24th Group Army 90th Chinese Corps Defending units: 16th Infantry Regiment 38th Division 2nd Tank Regiment 57th Division 13th Ind.Mixed Brigade 24th Infantry Regiment 22nd Field AA Machinecannon Company 3rd Provisional Base Force 50th Field AA Battalion 1st Provisional Base Force 2) Did a bombardment at Pegu to try to burn some supply. Ground combat at Pegu (55,53) Allied Bombardment attack Attacking force 34317 troops, 264 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 2326 Defending force 79948 troops, 749 guns, 254 vehicles, Assault Value = 2684 Japanese ground losses: 22 casualties reported Squads: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled Allied ground losses: 254 casualties reported Squads: 1 destroyed, 27 disabled Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled 3) Mike's email had a beef about the bombardment below. IT's the second time this TF has bombarded and gotten zero casualties. I looked up-AAR and on July 25th a larger TF with these ships plus more hit Rangoon and only got 36 casualties. He thinks it's a bug. I sent him an email with my thoughts, basically focusing on recon at night, that these are not BBs, what was the stand-off range, and that he's bombarding a hex he owns, so my LCUs are scattered. Finally, Aussie 7th got most of the effort, and they're the best-led, best-trained unit in the stack. They don't have any local forts yet, but I think some of the Chinese do. I know for sure some of the Rangoon Allied units had local forts of '2'. Has anyone else had experiences where naval bombardment has resulted in no enemy casualties? The Dutch defenders are hit while in strat mode, in mid-change, and booted up the track toward Batavia in that mode, the worst of both worlds. Bad, bad timing on my part. This force can clean up Java in a matter of weeks. Only Batavia and Merak have scraps of defenders ex-Soerbaja. If he comes for Soerbaja with just two divisions it'll be bloody, although supply there is at about 4000. The internal refinery and LI supply is enough for starvation defenses, and Forts are high. I need time. But regardless, Soerbaja isn't PBang. It helps the oil problem, but it doesn't solve it. If he goes for greater Java to reap VPs so much the better. Ground combat at Semarang (53,102) Japanese Shock attack Attacking force 12815 troops, 120 guns, 32 vehicles, Assault Value = 681 Defending force 3307 troops, 60 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 139 Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 2 Japanese adjusted assault: 180 Allied adjusted defense: 18 Japanese assault odds: 10 to 1 (fort level 2) Japanese forces CAPTURE Semarang !!! Assaulting units: 48th Division 33rd Division Defending units: 4th KNIL Regiment 5) PBang gets its daily does. CAP from Oosthaven has been worn down again and needs rest. I ordered a small av support unit out of PBang to move to the base south of there on the RR to Oosthaven (Prabang-something?) It has anb AF 2 already, and I can LRCAP from there to PBang and complicate targeting. Should have done it weeks ago, but I was sweating Benk. I have a nest of good fighters sitting on Cocos I. waiting for a base. 6) Rabaul Forts hit Madang again for 36 casualties. The first Trans-Pac B-24 unit lands at Rabaul, tired but pretty intact. The AF is about halfway to Level 7. 7) Eniwetok is bombed. A fairly large surface TF left Pearl today for Wake to be used as a raider force for the Marshalls. BB South Dakota arrived at Pearl as well. 8) Another really weird Japanese bombardment mission with no casualties. This time on land. Ground combat at Cagayan (79,89) Japanese Bombardment attack Attacking force 13410 troops, 127 guns, 42 vehicles, Assault Value = 434 Defending force 7843 troops, 0 guns, 49 vehicles, Assault Value = 203 Assaulting units: 16th Division Defending units: 101st PA Infantry Division 3rd PA Constabulary Regiment 102nd PA Infantry Division Cagayan USAAF Base Force III Philippine Corps 9) Took the time today to groom the TOE upgrades for all nations. A fair number overdue, mostly HQs and base forces, but some US Army infantry regiments too. About fifteen upgraded in the combatevents.txt report.
