I've had a lot of bombardments do that, even with recon and full detection levels.

Wonder what causes it?

Could it be FOW?

I think I was auto-upgraded to IE11 in the recent set of patches. When this happened with IE10 I had odd forum stuff happen. The font auto-shifted to Courier and the main page doesn't refresh unless I right-click tell it to. Now this. I think the forum software was designed by Fred Flintstone and ain't compatible with whatever Redmond is doing these days.

I've tried Chrome but don't like the interface. If this keeps up I may have to try one of the other options.

Post in the General Forum got one "me too!" so far.

I looked in Tracker and I think it's the real goods. It's good defensive terrain and these weren't BBs, but still, nothing?

You don´t like Chrome?! I tried it once and instantly ditched my long time love Firefox. Firefox might actually be an option for you. Its more like IE. Old and slow...

But try Chrome again. How you can not love it is beyond me!

I've been using IE since 1.0. Probably when you were a baby. It's not better, and it's not good sometimes, but it's set up like I like and my fingers know where to go without thinking. Chrome was too "tabby" for me, too spare. I like big and clunky. I'm a child of the 70s!

My first GF had a Gremlin. If you want to picture of the 70s, it's a pea-soup green Gremlin driven by a girl in high-waist pants and a tube top.

Haha, old habits die hard apparently!

I used IE in my early computer day (win 3.11) but later switched to Netscape. I was then back on IE for a while but in mid 2000 I switched to Firefox. Had that until Chrome was released. Tried it and instantly switched to it on both phone and computer.

Memory is dim, but I think my first "ISP", which was a rack of gear in a guy's spare bedroom, sent me a copy of Mosaic on a single 3-in floppy when I signed up. US Mail sent. 14k modem, 40 hours a month metered service. I remember loading Mosaic, going to an FTP server in South Africa somewhere, and seeing a picture of a guy's dog. I remember thinking "I'm looking into a guy's computer in AFRICA!! That's so COOOL!!!"

I don't remember how I got IE1. I remember the browser wars with Netscape, but I stood aside. Just stayed with what I knew. Now, I have Chrome installed, but I haven't loaded it in a couple of years. Don't think cookies for this forum are enabled or anything. I haven't logged inhere in many years. I have no idea what my password might be. But I may have to do something. This composition window thing is a deal-breaker.

Not Much Happens

1) Dutch sub is roughed up off Tavoy, but sees a 2-xAP, 2-xAK TF heading north, probably for Moulmein. The Port Blair bunch do not attack it. The Aussie 7th is maybe three days, maybe four, away from the target.

2) A little CAP get sup over PBang and takes out a bunch of bombers. More arrives overnight.

3) Troop bombing pretty light. Maybe 100 lost.

4) Japan repulses small LCU in central Java is the continued sparing over a supply route to Batavia.

Ground combat at Madioen (54,104)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 6660 troops, 33 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 253

Defending force 362 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 13

Japanese adjusted assault: 229

Allied adjusted defense: 13

Japanese assault odds: 17 to 1 (fort level 1)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Madioen !!!

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), leaders(+), preparation(-), experience(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
11 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Allied ground losses:
78 casualties reported
Squads: 5 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 3 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Units retreated 1

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

Assaulting units:
65th Brigade

Defending units:
3rd KNIL Landstorm Battalion

5) Rabaul B-17s hit both Wewak and Madang, killing 110 garrisoned troops. More or less vamping for time here waiting for B-24s to work their way across the wide Pacific.

6) A long list of LCUs arrive today. I feel as if the worst is over for the Allies. One more day and it's a new month. P-40Ks begin to arrive, P-38 production accelerates. There will be a bit more opposition in the air. NorPac is getting stronger every week, unopposed and so far as I can tell unobserved. I'm sure the Allies could take the Marshalls now with the fuly prepped USMC, but I dont' now where the KB is. It's possible fuel is starting to bite a little. If Burma goes down it will be interesting to see Japan's reaction. But we have months of hard fighting before that theater is resolved.

The Quietest Day of the War

. . . to date.

No action of any kind in night phase. No naval action. Air results were mostly sweeps without opposition, and stiff bombing of PBang and especially Soerbaja. Two TF icons seen in the northern Makassar Strait, so perhaps something is going down for Soerbaja soon. The MUTTLEY forces are very near to attack position. Northern NG was B-17 bombed again to take down the garrisons. There was no land combat anywhere.

For loyal readers here I think things are about to heat up. The three major Japanese bases in Burma have about 300,000 enemy troops. If these bases can be reduced it's a whole new war, on the ground and VP-wise. I've been thinking where I can go next to topple things a bit. I could take the Marshalls now except for the KB, for which I have no idea of location. Been debating a thrust into the Kuriles to shake the game up a bit, but I'm not there asset-wise yet. Need more 4E depth and a few more CVEs.

But the marching in place is about to end. September brings a lot of new Allied toys.

Some people probably disagrees with this...But whats the rush? You are still in Mid 42.

Writing on the phone which sucks so sorry if its short.

I would strongly advice you NOT to open another front at this stage. If Burma is about to explode that can put a tremendous strain on the allies Aircraft pools and squads. If Jap AV isn´t a real danger I would advice you to sit back and wait until you know if you can sustain any losses OUTSIDE Burma first. I think its highly unlikely you will be able to.

You don´t need to win the war in 42. There are plenty of time left for that!

OK, good points. From my POV we've been playing for fourteen months and it FEELS like it's much later. Also, I don't have the stuff, but he's gotta be starving for fuel pretty soon. As much as I can force a reaction I accelerate that. But no, you're right, with three USN carriers gone and a ton of cruisers--and no horde of fine DDs yet--I am light. I'm resigned to always being light on planes, especially since we're playing non-historical R&D. But the route I'm planning to take isn't as LBA-heavy as some.

Enough For a Good Cricket Match

1) Wewak is re-taken by Aussies numbering as in the title. Bombed out by B-17s, the Japanese have evaporated. Twenty-seven Forts visit Madang again on what is essentially a training mission. 113 Japanese die. Truk is re-reconned to watch for port activity, the Forts' true purpose.

2) Eniwetok has shown empty of enemy ships for a few days, and both red and green mines are present. AM Grebe is sent from Wake to sweep and runs into a fleet DD and three PBs, which rake her and leave her burning. I assume this force is there to stop unescorted re-supply missions, but Eniwetok still has over 40,000 supply and is good for months. This enemy force is, however, ripe for a DD raid.

Roi-Namur is bombed by B-24s from Wake. Light AF damage. This unit will probably move on to Rabaul now that the AF there can support full-scale 4E ops.

3) Troop bombing in Burma meets increasing CAP and is fairly ineffective. Less than 100 casualties and about five enemy are downed. The Aussie 7th Div. was seven miles from Moulmein at the beginning of the turn, so the time is almost here. Fatigue and supply will be checked, leaders adjusted if needed, and the attack will go in as soon as possible. A small blocking force of one Chinese corps is across the river northwest of Chiang Mai, holding hexsides and pinning the Chiang Mai defense for a turn or three. Six LCUs appear there now, up from Bangkok by RR I think. Perhaps a couple of days strat conversion too. I don't think they will figure in the battle at Moulmein, but need to be watched.

4) The 48th Division begins to land at Semarang in north-central Java. Escorted by DMSes, no bombardment. Landing casualties are 700 on the first phase, perhaps indicating poor prep. The Dutch unit moved there to open the supply route to Batavia had been ordered to strat move to Batavia for airlift to PBang. It will re-convert to Combat and make new plans. Soerbaja is bombed pretty heavily. Supply is shrinking again, down to about 8,000.

5) A massive attack at Chungking drops forts to Level 5, but at a frightful cost to Japan. Chinese casualties are relatively modest. But the Forts can't be re-built.

Ground combat at Chungking (76,45)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 200067 troops, 2047 guns, 1430 vehicles, Assault Value = 7611

Defending force 163166 troops, 1108 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 4964

Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 5

Japanese adjusted assault: 13775

Allied adjusted defense: 8589

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 1 (fort level 5)

Japanese Assault reduces fortifications to 5

More than a week I'd say. Mike has historically been careful with his ground forces. That's his background, as mine is subs. It shouldn't matter in the game, but I find it does from my side at least.

No move on PB. With 200,000 at Chungking and over 300,000 in Burma I don't know how much more he has handy for overseas once he garrisons.

The LCU count at Chinag Mai went to 28 on the turn I just sent back. Interesting. It's rough terrain westbound from there to Moulmein, and I expect a lot of them are arty, engineers, and HQs. Some combat guys I'm sure, but it must have stripped somewhere pretty badly. Bangkok? Some of Malaysia? Saigon?

I ordered the attack on Moulmein to go. Fingers crossed. Could be a mistake, but I'm committed. Time is the most important resource now, and if I can tie up 300,000 plus 28 LCUs at CM, good. Virtually nothing American is involved in this theater and the Americans just get stronger every day. Next to no attrition of their forces since the battles in the Marshalls months ago.

MUTTLEY Rolls In

1) The Aussies had fatigue of 18, leaders were great, supply was so-so, and the attack on Moulmein went in. The combat screen showed the two IJA divisions in fine shape, but the other guys not at full strength. Arty is not that robust, and the defense relied quite a bit on forts. They were dropped one in an even-odds attack. Allied casualties were bad, but I have to look at which units. If the disabled are mostly Chinese, as I suspect, I will attack again tomorrow most likely and keep up the pressure. He will try to hustle some supply in by sea; I don't have the luxury of 3-4 days between attacks.

After so long positioning the forces it was nice to finally be on the offensive.

Ground combat at Moulmein (55,55)

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 108628 troops, 822 guns, 406 vehicles, Assault Value = 3874

Defending force 43743 troops, 392 guns, 206 vehicles, Assault Value = 1223

Allied engineers reduce fortifications to 3

Allied adjusted assault: 2274

Japanese adjusted defense: 1957

Allied assault odds: 1 to 1 (fort level 3)

Allied Assault reduces fortifications to 3

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), forts(+), preparation(-), experience(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
1945 casualties reported
Squads: 5 destroyed, 155 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 13 disabled
Engineers: 1 destroyed, 6 disabled
Guns lost 26 (1 destroyed, 25 disabled)

2) In prep of this attack the first strong unit of P-38s swept Moulmein from Port Blair and did very well. It's nice to occasionally have a stand-up fight in the air.

Maybe Shoulda Waited

1) Attack on Moulmein, second day, didn't get good results. The disablements from Day 1 were concentrated in two LCUs, and they were on Reserve, but still I need to rest a bit now. Re-supply happened and all LUCs in attacking stack are in the green. Supply is still rushing over from Bombay where the Cape Town Express is still throwing mega-tons into the Indian railroad system. Rail to Calcutta, ship to Chittagong, and out into storm-ravaged Burma.

Two more corps coming into Moulmein from adjacent eastern hex, and a tank unit from the north. Chiang Mai shows 32 LCUs now.

2) Did a bombardment at Pegu to try to burn some supply.

3) Mike's email had a beef about the bombardment below. IT's the second time this TF has bombarded and gotten zero casualties. I looked up-AAR and on July 25th a larger TF with these ships plus more hit Rangoon and only got 36 casualties. He thinks it's a bug. I sent him an email with my thoughts, basically focusing on recon at night, that these are not BBs, what was the stand-off range, and that he's bombarding a hex he owns, so my LCUs are scattered. Finally, Aussie 7th got most of the effort, and they're the best-led, best-trained unit in the stack. They don't have any local forts yet, but I think some of the Chinese do. I know for sure some of the Rangoon Allied units had local forts of '2'.

Has anyone else had experiences where naval bombardment has resulted in no enemy casualties?

4) Landings continue at Semarang. The Dutch defenders are hit while in strat mode, in mid-change, and booted up the track toward Batavia in that mode, the worst of both worlds. Bad, bad timing on my part.

This force can clean up Java in a matter of weeks. Only Batavia and Merak have scraps of defenders ex-Soerbaja. If he comes for Soerbaja with just two divisions it'll be bloody, although supply there is at about 4000. The internal refinery and LI supply is enough for starvation defenses, and Forts are high. I need time. But regardless, Soerbaja isn't PBang. It helps the oil problem, but it doesn't solve it. If he goes for greater Java to reap VPs so much the better.

Ground combat at Semarang (53,102)

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 12815 troops, 120 guns, 32 vehicles, Assault Value = 681

5) PBang gets its daily does. CAP from Oosthaven has been worn down again and needs rest. I ordered a small av support unit out of PBang to move to the base south of there on the RR to Oosthaven (Prabang-something?) It has anb AF 2 already, and I can LRCAP from there to PBang and complicate targeting. Should have done it weeks ago, but I was sweating Benk. I have a nest of good fighters sitting on Cocos I. waiting for a base.

6) Rabaul Forts hit Madang again for 36 casualties. The first Trans-Pac B-24 unit lands at Rabaul, tired but pretty intact. The AF is about halfway to Level 7.

7) Eniwetok is bombed. A fairly large surface TF left Pearl today for Wake to be used as a raider force for the Marshalls. BB South Dakota arrived at Pearl as well.

8) Another really weird Japanese bombardment mission with no casualties. This time on land.

Ground combat at Cagayan (79,89)

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 13410 troops, 127 guns, 42 vehicles, Assault Value = 434

Defending force 7843 troops, 0 guns, 49 vehicles, Assault Value = 203

Assaulting units:
16th Division

Defending units:
101st PA Infantry Division
3rd PA Constabulary Regiment
102nd PA Infantry Division

9) Took the time today to groom the TOE upgrades for all nations. A fair number overdue, mostly HQs and base forces, but some US Army infantry regiments too. About fifteen upgraded in the combatevents.txt report.

Bombard with mostly CLs and you won´t get much in terms of casualties.

That's true, and a look at the July 25th entry shows this TF with some CAs even do only 36 kills at Rangoon. But zero anything? Twice? Not even a squad disabled? I don't think it's a bug or a pwhex issue, but sometimes the game just hornswoggles me. And Mike too FWIW.

He responded good-naturedly, saying he'll keep trying. If I shift some 2Es to Naval it will be an, um . . . coincidence.

Do you think your opponent is running up against the problem with lessor ranged ships do not engage in bombardment missions? Which is fixed in a later beta...

We are playing the 'R' which I think is OK on that.

I think it's a combo of smaller guns, bombarding an own-side hex and not an enemy hex, the targets having a small amount of local forts already, maybe stand-off range (he hasn't said what he set), and terrain type. In the target detail all except the Aussie 7th got about a DD's-worth of attention and that's not great odds of casualties with the other variables. It's the twice without even a disablement that's surprising to me.

Don't Do That!

Rapid turn-around on the movie considering Da Bears (Mike's team) is playing the Vikes right now. Maybe he did it at the half.

1) Slow day. Resting troops. Bombarded at Rangoon and Pegu both to burn supply and recon. Pegu got good info:

5) Burma troop bombing continues light. Hope it's supply problems. P-38s from Port Blair sweep Moulmein again, score 3:1 on Zeros and Nicks. 4Es from Mandalay hit Moulmein AF and destroy three planes on ground.

6) B-24s get into action on Madang, along with B-17s. Garrison being systematically reduced. Recon shows no ships in at Truk.

7) Other bombing at Soerbaja, Chungking, Eniwetok. Another day at work.

8) Odd thing yesterday in comabtevents.txt. Forgot to mention. It reported Yamato NOT sunk, even though combat report reported her sunk. I have never seen FOW applied to a firm combat report sighting of "sunk". I have seen the sinking not seen first-hand and the report retracted, but when the combat reports says "and is sunk" that is usually the truth. I'm 90% sure there was a sunk ship sound effect too. The combatevents.txt substituted in another BB, one of the K-names I think. (Not Kongo; the other one.)
