Just an enquiry as to what is happening-it all seems very er.. quiet.
When might we get a thread devoted to it or an Alpha AAR?
From what I`ve read so far it seems very promising.
P.S. Any chance of modification to the the Air war.?It`s been nearly 2 years now and the Air model hasn`t really improved.

The WitW is coming along very nicely but Joel is the man to inform you guys!

As for Air War - well... I hope that all of you that are reading this are sitting firmly in their chairs... the WitW Air War is now a beautiful thing (even in ALPHA) - Pavel made great job and BtR ("Bombing the Reich") stuff in WitW is superb - you would all be absolutely amazed at detail and possibilities of new Air War in WitW (both Tactical and Strategic)!

There is a thread stickied up above entitled basic info for WITW that has some info for you 8)

Like Leo says the new air system is a massive improvement in every aspect. I cant pick which one is more beautiful, the logistics or the air war.. Its like comparing two sunsets.

Bombing the Reich takes hours to play 1 simulated day. Is WITE's details such that players need to decide which airfields will be attached every week? In the real campaign, that probably amounted to 50+ airfields. I think the old SPI War in Europe abstracted the air war too much, but it is also easy to have so much detail that the airwar is the game.

Also, how to model Allied leadership in the early part of the war needs to be seriously considered. In WITE we are seeing well coordinated Soviet defenses a few weeks after the invasion. The Allied weaponary/numbers are on par with the German ones. The Allies were much better on defense than attack, so making their defensive CV weak does not seem realistic. On the other hand, with poor leadership it could take a long time for a big breakthrough to be sealed, or have a well-coordinated offensive. The North African Campaign will be especially difficult to model, since the offensives there were only a few days long and front lines were very fluid. The number of divisions in the theater were generally less than 10.

War in the West '43-'45 starts in July '43. So no north african fighting. With the air campaign there is an incredible amount of detail and research rolled into it. My understanding is that Pavel has some really cool systems in place that allow the player to do as much or little as he wants.

In WITW you create air directive to the Air HQs, which are executed during the air execution phase. So it is very HQ centric and allows to model various doctrine limitations. Each air directive then can be adjusted next air planning phase with no need to set orders for each group or air base every turn. The goal is to allow most of the system to operate with minimal amount of orders.

As an example player should be able to create ground attack doctrine for the 2nd RAF Tactical Air Command. Specify the target (center) hex, area (radius), priority for the targets (interdict, units, air fields, railways, rail yards, ports, etc). After that system will generate certain amount of air strikes using available resources and air HQ's doctrine setting.

Depending on the air directive type, player can micromanage and assign particular groups to it, set way points, set intensity, set how many days a week it will fly, set altitude, set minimum planes (escorts) required, enable/disable partial escorts, set air directive's priority, etc.

The core system is almost in and we are getting ready to teach AI using it. At the end anyone could allow AI to run air war if he(she) wants.

It sure sounds like a dream come true... This would be awesome. I noted the distinction "railways, rail yards"...

Can you give some details as to the air fields? Are they mobile units like in WitE, or predefined spots on the map to be build up like in AE? Or something entirely different?

Air bases are off map units attached to the city dots. There are many air base only cities. It is possible to construct new ones in the existing cities. It is possible to shut them down by setting TOE to 1 or set them to AUTO and it will keep TOE depending on the amount of planes/groups in there. Etc..
