Dan is back to running lightely escorted convoys along the southern coast of New Guinea going up to Boela. My SS are swarming and getting in a nice late-war tally of new sinkings. So far for July we have sink 5 AK, 2 YMS, an SC, and an AP. Like those 'freebies!'

TWO Divisions of the Kido Butai are now down at Tulagi. On the 14th they stage a CAP Trap that blast a nice amount of B-25 and Venturas. Hmmmm...yummy...free, unescorted bombers...

The carriers are ordered to retire to Tulagi, fuel and prepare to make the move along southern New Guinea, past Horn Isle, and head for Timor. We'll scatter everything in our path and totally disrupt his convoying system. These eight CVs will then join-up with the six that are in the DEI to form a massed, striking force.

LOTS of air tussling on the 14th. A lost a bunch of Franks over Bangkok to what, apparently, are some hot Spitfire pilots. Taking those 20 losses out, it is a good aerial day with fights over Taihoku, Nauru, and Laoag.

Spitfires are tough, but you bagged some, plus more jugs. A very good day.

Don't know why. He has a ton of PFs and DEs on hand now. They are just total sub killers.

I am not complaining at all. Seven more I-Boats are about to deploy into the area and I hope to keep the meals coming regularly and often until the force is sunk. Right now if I can trade an I-Boat for 1-2 sinkings I consider that pretty good for this point of the campaign.

You might want to send a few long legged Iboats to Karachi...perhaps bag a tanker of something there? Spread out his worries and escorts, perhaps?

Convoy TK-5 drops anchor and begins unloading its precious cargo of oil and fuel. The 18 TK and AO are too much for Hiroshima to handle so the convoy splits with 1/3 moving on up to Osaka. Three full months of power for the economy is getting unloaded into Japan. Thank the Gods!

We must now think about HOW to bring them back to the DEI. It does have to be tried---RIGHT??

At Singapore, Convoy TK-6 begins to form. This will be a smaller convoy carrying about 150,000 Fuel and Oil. Do we try to time running it thru when the American Fleet is refueling or otherwise occupied? Hmmm...

The screenshot shows the TF with about 75,000 fuel already unloaded.

I am trying to get one good lick in SOMEWHERE on the board every turn.

The Japanese were able to slip a small convoy in to Mindanao to get some very desperately needed supplies there. In doing that several air groups were able to get operational again. Their presence is immediately felt to the detriment of the Allied Fleet:

July 15th 3 Peggy put a TT in DD Dyson sinking her.

July 16th 4 Peggy plant another TT into DD Dixon. Result: SUNK!

A pair of DDs in two days. It isn't much but it is SOMETHING!

Same Day.

Dan has been sending in escorted Squadrons of DB and TB to Ternate and across Luzon. It has been annoying so I decide to attempt a bit of trickery. Batan Isle is the Japanese main base in those islands between Formosa and Luzon. The Allies have ignored it so I fly in a large Daitai of SAMS crewed by my best pilots. Set them to LR CAP over Laoag. Sure enough, a Squadron of F6F Sweep and a squadron of SBDs come in after. The SAMS do some FINE work:

The Allies pull back for re-supply and the Japanese immediately get lots of convoys moving.

We have troops coming in from the West and a BUNCH of troops coming over from the Marianas. There are nearly 30,000 men in these TFs. Just as important is 65,000+ supply moving in to Amoy, Pescadores, and Formosa. If we can move and land all this then it will make a BIG difference for the coming next phase of the fight.

You might notice a Carrier TF on the screen. Those four CVs have all their DB and TB on 100% ASW. Those highly skilled bomber and torpedo pilots are laying waste to the American SS. Yesterday was a sinking sub sound and today there were TWO sinking sounds. NICE! There is considerable risk in operating in these waters but I needed to cover the troop convoy from the Marianas.

I wrote details on the screenshot so you can see what is going where:

The Allies probe Japanese fighter defense over Takao with six separate Sweeps and get a solid whacking. Fighting over Ternate and Laoag as well. Here are the numbers on the day:

It's early yet, but do you think your low altitude stacked CAP approach is bearing fruit on Formosa?

It appears so. I need to get my fighter groups up to full strength. Supplies have been low enough in Formosa I have had issues with that. Now that these convoys are unloading I should be able to. Right now I am converting a Frank-A to -B group every other day and every three days for Tony-100.

Congrats on the business! Terrifying indeed; let's hope the Trump reforms happen and there is no recession over the next few years. That said, I would imagine Subways are well-insulated against macro economic effects - they might even have an inverse relationship!

If I ever get around to finishing my other games (three currently: May 43, Feb 43, April/May 42), would love to face you. Love your style and the way you approach the game. Some AFBs deride it, but it is bliss to read about. Keep up the good fight and may you continue to frustrate Canoerebel. He's getting too cool and sure of himself in his thread!

Traditionally Subway does better when the economy is having issues then when the economy is soaring. Definitely counter-intuitive!

You would be a good opponent. There is no doubt as to that.

My next game is spoken for. It has been for about 18 months.

I have NEVER, EVER cared for what others think. They play their way and I'll play mine. Pretty simple really. The issue I have is when it becomes personal and not game commentary. I love to help other players and do so whenever I can. Others tend to really enjoy their sideline commentary without ever putting any skin into the game. For me the game is about letting it go and having a GOOD time. That is what I love. This game is a great escape and when it becomes a burden or personal is when it is time to get out and take some time off.

Well, Subway has low price points. A lot of people turn to more reasonably priced meals when the economy is slow. Had my first subway sandwich last month while at the airport. Not a bad meal at all..

Yup. McDonalds and other perceived 'value' quick service restaurants tend to do better in economic downturns. High-falutin' markets like Whole Foods not so much.

crsutton-how'd you go through most of your adult life without visiting Subway until now? You livin' under some Birkenstock-wearin' rock?
