Got a turn done last night and am starting the current one. Will Post on developments at that point.

I am thinking about Home Island defense against Strategic Bombing. Want to concentrate defenses in the most logical manner. How have players, who have gotten this far, done that? Any good tips?

Having just finished up my R&D for the war, at least for now, I would say protect your main late war fighters and their engines factories from destruction. Next will be Refineries and Heavy Industry.

What airframes and engines do you have at Harbin?

While I made it this far, I am certainly not an expert. Here are a few comments:

1) Identify critical factories and defend those.

2) Make sure you have your AA guns able to shoot to high altitudes in these hexes. Those 20mm AA gun groups will not do anything against higher flying bombers. They will show up on the gun count so they can be used as deception.

3) If you are going to defend a hex, defend it. Not one squadron but multiple squadrons using layered cap from multiple bases. 200 planes is a good start, it is not enough if he really wants to bomb the hex. I faced sweeps of over 500 planes in multiple hexes in 1945.

4) One thing Lowpe taught me was to decide where you will repair your planes. Most late war Japanese planes are SR2 or higher. You need a couple of designated places to send squadrons to repair or replace aircraft. The Home Islands has a wonderful rail network to move damaged planes. You need a big airfield with enough aviation support and supply. Forts here really help. Do not forget about bases in Korea. These can be useful to refill groups if they can transfer out. I made extensive use of Seoul for refilling Kamikaze groups. Supply can be an issue here and needs to be managed.

5) Eventually, supply will be an issue in the home islands. Make sure you move it around to prevent it from being bombed.

I am sure others have more advise.

The above sounds like pretty sensible advice to me. If I were your opponent, I would focus on anything involved in the making of Frank-a/b/r or Sams. Whatever night fighter production you have should also be safeguarded, as that will be a weak spot for you very quickly. Engines, airframes, Fuel/oil to feed HI to feed production as secondary defense goals.

Are you prepared for Soerbaja, Palembang and Balikpapan's oil/fuel to go away? At this point, does it really matter? If you want to keep these production centers intact, what will you do to defend those key fuel/oil centers' production?

I am a bit late in responding to your thoughts on Gettysburg, but I would strongly urge you to go if you can manage the time. If you do go, make sure to allow a small amount of time for the cyclorama. I saw it a few years ago and was impressed with the way they blended in models near the painting to give a 3-D illusion.

Holistic Zen approach to saving the Economy:

You need to constantly evolve your tactics. In the beginning you will have plentiful planes. Make sure every base with strategic VP and within range of B29 is covered with at least one squadron. You need to use fighter bombers, obsolete fighters (at least those with cannons), rex and rufes, splinters, etc.

Bleeding CAP outside the range of sweepers works well and keeps feeding in fighters longer. But watch the fatigue.

Radar...can't be stressed how important radar is. Make sure they have the latest. The AA regiments have them. Night bombing targets need searchlights and radar. The more the merrier.

Make sure you have several level 9 bases in eastern Honshu with plentiful HQa.

Make sure your HQa cover and overlap all of Honshu. Double check the leaders - there are some real dogs.

Make sure there is AA everywhere. Your goal is to give no free lunch to his bombers to start with. Every bombing run needs to run into some kind of resistance (hopefully multiple kinds).

Artillery shows up as guns...and might scare him away. Especially the first time he runs into a nest of 12 cm AA guns.

Rotate around at least 200 fighters...making roving air festung traps. Don't be predictable with them. You want them to be spotted, and to introduce a serious risk for the Allies to bomb lower value targets.

Allies need good to great DL so watch that carefully...but they can do great damage with a 0 dl bombing raid too.

You need pilots badly...the further to the rear increase the percentage flying CAP and use them to train experience.

Night fighters really need to be managed carefully. You almost always have to set range greater to 0...so watch the fatigue and make sure the pilots are always 100 percent staffed. You may want to put nothing but tracom pilots into the night program if it becomes hot and heavy (this is a controversial subject).

You can use Night fighters to attempt to LRCAP a shore bombardment target...sometimes you get lucky and shoot down the spotter.

Check your HI/LI concentrations. Tokyo and Osaka certainly need solid protection.

Watch your altitudes...you can be -2K to +3K of the approach altitude.

July 23-25, 1944

The Allies throw a wrench into Japanese plans by deciding to move and do SOMETHING. The 1.0x10^6 moves up from Legaspi and all Japanese planning immediately shifts.

TK-6
The Home Islands Tanker TF heading for Japan makes it just past Cam Rahn Bay and is immediately recalled. The Carriers and BB accompaning these valuable ships all reverse course and begin to retire towards Singapore.

TK-5
The apparent GOOD news is that the empty Tankers of TK-5 makes it past the on-coming juggernaut and make for the Indochina Coast. It LOOKS like they have made it past and are moving on towards the DEI.

We have a plan that has been stated before as to how we'll bring these TKs and AOs home.

Well, kinda. You were considering options (e.g., heavy KB escort or not) and mulling possibilities the last the topic arose here. What have you decided to do after all?

That will be the plan.

I shall continue to load up the TKs and AOs coming south and then, in a massed set of TFs, we'll cut across the area south of the Philippines and head for the Marianas then home. Within about 5 days I shall have the entire CV Fleet concentrated at Soerabaja/Singers.

Going to Post the last three days of aerial losses and explain the action.

July 22nd
KB-1 and KB-2 cut thru the Allied lines at Horn Island heading due west. I have set for strikes to fly in a limited manner at just five hexes. Unfortunately, an American TF is right at the five hex range and massed fight occurs over CL Mobile.

Three Japanese strike go in and fight thru massed CAP. Losses are pretty heavy and the Mobile takes three big bombs.

An un-escorted strike by B-25s try to get thru Japanese CAP over the CVs and it is destroyed.

Here are the numbers for the day:

July 24th

No Japanese strikes this day but several American attacks try to penetrate the Japanese CAP with no success.

The American Armada is spotted and a small Japanese strike goes after it and meets this:

More strikes fly at the Japanese in the south and a group of TB try to attack the American Fleet.

Most importantly the Allies try to crush Takao, Formosa this day. They find the Japanese FULL OF FIGHT! There are 184 Japanese fighters over the base (set at 9K--Franks, 7K--Tony and Sams, and 5 K--Zeros) they work to fight off a series of five Sweeps prior to a massed strike of 12 F and 112 B-24, followed by eight small raids of B-24s and ending with three more Sweeps.

The Japanese defense, more-or-less, holds. Near the end there is nothing left flying but that is good as they don't have to fight the last Fighter Sweeps. There are seven AA units present in Takao and they let go with all they have. At the end of the day the AF is only 11% damaged. NOTHING else!

Replenish Fighter losses and rotate the mangled Daitai/Sentai to Taihoku while flying in 150 more fighters to keep strength up for tomorrow. Will wager he thinks this day will make tomorrow far easier. WRONG!

Ah, the lovely Poudre River Canyon, definitley one of the things I miss about my childhood growing up in Ft. Collins. Used to hike, fish, picnic and x-country ski there often in the early - mid 70's. Enjoy the time away.

We celebrate 15 years in mid-June. Amazing that the time has passed like that. Doesn't at all feel that way. Got a GREAT gal!

The Allied monstrosity appears to be headed for the Chinese Coast cutting off what he THINKS is the last edge of Japanese movement between the Home Islands and DEI.

The air battle over Formosa continues as Takao is swept by 11 Fighter units and Kagi gets swept by 5. The Air-to-Air is pretty ferocious but not terrible. Focus on the Fighter losses on totals of the day and THEN we'll talk about the majority of Japanese bomber losses during the course of the day:

Have not had the time to check Milford, CONN to Gettysburg, PA but it cannot be too bad.

Gettysburg now is one of the finest Battlefield Parks in the Nation. They have really bent over backwards in the past decade or so to make it look as it was in 1863. There are some great shops in town as well. One is an antique firearms dealer. Well worth a visit even if you are not looking to buy a firearm.

There is a Subway in town, where I got one of daily specials and ate it near Little Round Top when I was there during the winter. No lines anywhere or bad traffic...which really hits the town hard during the summer months I recall.

Seems to me that you should have an MRE or some sort of 'ration-like' item to eat when you go to someplace like that!
