Here we can discuss Real Issues - Sexual perfection, Top Secret Banzai Beauties and where is that $10,000,000 diamond hoard?!

Combat Report
August 6-7, 1944

The Formosa Area
The air withdrawal from Formosa is in full force as every base is now getting hit without a chance of getting up off the carpet. Here are the two day actions of the various bases:

Taihoku 10 B-24 and 52 B-25 followed by 14 B-24 and 48 B-25
Kagi Bombarded by BC Renown and BB Valiant then 48 B-24
Pescadores Hit by--get this--135 B-29. The GOOD news here is that they didn't hit the Home Islands.
Karenko 24 B-25 and then 36 B-25
Takao 24 B-24 and then 36 B-24
Taichu 157 B-24 on the 7th

Very NASTY!

Amoy
Five Allied divisions are attacking Amoy. The good news is the GOOD news is that the base is held by an ID and full Brigade at Sz-5 Forts. Bad news is that they won't hold long. Aug 6th sees a 1-1 dropping Forts to 4 and then the 7th sees a 1-2 with no Fort change.

Indochina
The Allies are surging throughout the Thailand area heading for the coast of Indochina. All large units (4 ID, a TK Div, Air Army, Air Flotilla, and 3 TK Regiments are already well away. The remaining units will fight a delaying action as long as they can. Konpang Chhang falls on the 6th.

Malaya
Only a single Chinese Corps is moving along the road coming south from Bangkok. There is a very rude surprise waiting for him. Additionally, there may be an opportunity here...

Eastern DEI
Ternate
The Kido Butai and the Reinforcement Convoy arrive at Ternate and deliver a full Brigade and 10,000 supply. They lift off an Engineer unit and Air Flotilla. This base will now hold for quite a while holding the southern edge of my gap as I prepare to shoot the Tanker through to the Marianas.

On the 7th the convoys finishes unloading and loading so it departs for Balikpapan. The Kido Butai moves to cover a supply convoy heading for Davao carrying 10,000 supply to make it more viable as the northern edge of my gap.

Soerabaja
On the 7th, three convoys of Tankers depart. They carry over 600,000 Fuel and Oil for the Home Islands. The plan will be for them to move to Balikpapan, then head east along northern Celebes, and then take a risky two day trek towards Babeldoap and then the Marianas.

The ENTIRE Fleet will escort them out.

Australia
Fenton
The Aussie Brigade that attempts to take Fenton is driven out by the 90th Inf Reg and then kicked back across the river by a second attack by that impressive unit. NICE!

Home Islands
The last Night Fighter unit moves to its assigned base. AA units are at their bases. Army and Navy Fighters up through Tokyo are ready. Am currently working to move supply and several Air HQs north to set-up re-building bases for beat-up air units.

I allow a small number of aircraft to fly on the 7th to test the Fighter CAP over Boela. This is what we find:

Sweep him instead to test fighter cap....dig up a squadron of Georges...I think they are probably your best sweepers. Or maybe Sams make half decent sweepers. As long as you don't lose more than 2-1 then you are doing okay...you probably can and should be sweeping him in China -- what does his defense look like (high, low, layered, etc?)

You have pertty maps too, now!

Good luck with the tanker convoy.

One of the interesting facts about the end game and fuel and oil is that that it lasts longer than you think once you industry starts burning up to a crisp.

A night time raid by 129 B29s usually result in 5-10 smaller waves (the first wave is generally the largest) and, again, surprisingly it is usually the last few waves of small splinters that really do the damage as AA is tired and disrupted and the night fighters worn out. Of course, if there is no combined defense then they will really hurt. A raid with no defense but AA over a Osaka or Tokyo hitting the manpower can easily generate 5-10,000 VPs over several days.

Depending upon experience, morale, leadership, etc all the usual suspects, you will probably get hit with 50 to 75 percent of the total possible bombers as they get lost, distracted, fail to link up, never fly, etc. Your job is to constantly damage them when they do fly...as they are real hard to keep flying. No free bombing flights...think about night bombing their runways and or bombarding them with ships if at all possible (usually not).

As soon as August 15th appears, I shall begin a Night Bombing Campaign. I've got Recon getting ready to to some serious searching of Luzon's AFs. Am already started but plan to really ramp it up in the next few days. No pulling of triggers until the 15th.

Am pulling out the Fighters as fast as I can from Formosa and getting ready to sweep the hexes over Occupied China.

Am currently unloading over 40,000 troops in Shanghai presently. Will show a detail map within a few game days showing plans and movement. I TRULY want to tie him up in China for as long as possible...

Had to run up to Fort Collins to do paperwork today and had a very nice chat with my NOBLE OPPONENT. Dan was doing well. I usually call him at the office and tell his receptionist to 'tell him it is John from LaSalle.' He always hops on laughing. Was concerned about the chaos coming with the store purchase and wanted him to hear it directly that July--August will be pure insanity!

We got the official A OK on the purchase from Corporate today. This is the final hurdle. Will now schedule training in Milford, CONN and then we enter the world of ownership!

Damn but you've got that right. Life is pretty 'interesting' right now and I have no idea how crazy it is going to get when we takeover. It is this concern that prompted my call to Dan yesterday. Just wanted him to be caught up on possibilities.

August 10, 1944

The I-Boats continue to score at a good and reasonable pace right now. For August 10th:

I-5 hits AK Joe Harris with a TT near Los Angeles
I-200 hits AK Fultala with two separate attacks sinking her near Rangoon.

Combat Report

I've just detailed sub action so that is covered.

All Formosa bases are struck with Pescadores and Batan added for good measure.

The biggest news was the fall of Amoy in a 5-1 attack. This was expected though not wanted.

Shoring up the shoulders:
Just like in Sumatra, the Japanese rush troops to form a hard should for the Allied Invasion to run up against. The east is now totally secure with the arrival of nearly 40,000 troops. The west is strengthening slowly and this concerns me. The lack of good, quick roads is hampering the arrival of 7 IDs. IF given some time, Japan has a real chance of causing a serious bellyache for the Allied Troops.

Doubt if Dan will provide that time but one can always HOPE!

Here is the area of active Japanese Operations.

The Allied 1.0x10^6 is seen moving slowly SW (west of Manila).

The three TFs of the Kido Butai are done with their covering missions at Ternate and Davao. Orders are for a return to Balikpapan. There may be an additional opportunity for a punch. We'll know in 2 days.

A troop convoy carrying four CD units, an Air Fleet, and Air Flotilla scoots along the southern edge of Mindanao heading for the Marianas and then home.

Another troop convoy moves westward taking a full strength ID to Singers for a new deployment.

My opponent is predictable. HERE is the first night target for Japanese bombing. The screen shows the massed number of aircraft there, it does not show you the 450+ ships disbanded in Manila Bay. Now THERE is a harbor that could realistically handle that massive of Fleet there!

Which would be the better choice for the first night-bombing: AF or Port?

I am warning you now, you will be disappointed in your night bombing effectiveness. By all means try it...but don't expect great or even good results.

You might be effective where there is no AA and no NFs if your DL is good.

Didn't Ulithi have over 1000 ships?

I'll wager BUCKETS of AA at Manila but it is worth a try.

Legaspi is another target. DITTO that base he took on the coast of China.

Just did the August 11th turn and not much happened. Normal strikes but nothing of note.

The 12th won't be too exciting from the Japanese view but the 13th will have merit...TRUST ME...

AF or Port??

I would have to go with "PORT." If you hit the AF, you will probably just damage airframes and not destroy too many of them. If you go for port, you should be able to get some hits on any Assault Shipping that is there. You may not sink any, but if you can limit the number he has available for his next invasion(s), I would consider that a win.

If he has nothing but the tiny naval shipyard at Manila, well then it is long way back to Oz for repairs of major damage.

Especially good if you can knock out guns and devices on his heavy surface ships.

Like hitting the Port as well as the shipyard. Hitting THAT makes a ton of sense.

Great truth Chickenboy.

I read Dan's AAR when we 'ended' this match the first time and was fairly appalled at some of the personal attacks and vitriol that was said over there. I will not read it again. Don't understand why some people make it so personal (well..with the exception of ONE individual) but it did and does happen.

Uh-Oh!

The enemy is coming south. Think he sniffed out our plans. No big deal. Begin a pullback and--just to make it fun--set-up a CAP TRAP over Manado where I purposefully leave about a dozen ships. Juicy enough target any planes set the attack SHOULD attack. We move in 4 full strength Daitai of IJN Fighters.

I won't read my opponents aar ever I think...I never have yet.

The joy of reading both sides AAR is understanding what is important to both sides...which is often wildly different.

I like Judys, and if you make 1945 then 25percent or so will go banzai on you without having to be in a Kamikaze unit.

But the best aspect of 45 is ramming planes...I love that. Especially if they are poor pilots. I think there is an experience check...the lower the experience the more likely to crash into something...pure anecdotal evidence on my part though.

In my desire to ram planes, I used a Kamikaze fighter squadron on CAP...they did intercept the Jugs but no ramming. I guess it is hard to ram a Jug with an Oscar.
