Combat Report

The Japanese have had a string a relative successes over the last several days. Yesterday's sinking of the Alaska and modern Light Cruisers Columbia and Phoenix (at the cost of 6 DDs) was a heady event. The evening of the 30th brings the sharp realization that the Americans will probably throw everything they have into attacking Fusan port. Nearly 100 AKs and APs are loading over a dozen units to bring back to the Home Isles. There is a lot left to protect these valuable ships but it only LOOKS like a lot.

Adm Tanaka's BCs are ordered home by Combined Fleet. Though damaged, the crews of these two ships are quite satisfied with what they accomplished but fully understand what is coming. With an escort of E-Class ASW ships, the two BCs and CA Maya depart for Yokohoma. They will have an uneventful cruise. The remaining pair of CAs with 5 DDs depart as well but they are ordered to make a limited offensive sweep west and then head for Yokohoma. The remaining ships is divided into weak Task Forces. They are not much. There are the normal MTB and PT groups. Four small units of E-Class escorts are created as well as one of large PBs. The goal is not to win the battle but to keep the Allies AWAY from the harbor.

Ohhhhh...yes....the harbor. Fusan is protected by its Fortress as well as two full strength CD units. Nearly 500 mines fill the approaches as well.

Fusan girds itself for what is to come.

Beginning at about 1am the hammer begins to fall on the Japanese position. The Allies created five TFs of 6 PT boats and at least five Surface TFs. They are all ordered to attack shipping as well as penetrate the harbor and/or soften up the AFs with bombardment.

What a wild-and-crazy melee follows!!!

Nearly 20 separate TFs clash during the late-night/morning hours. We see the little boys duking it out with machine guns and light cannons, Allied TFs (some with cruisers--Baltimore, Canberra II, Houston II, Gambia, as well as several others--but most with just DDs) fight it out in close quarters. Ships maneuver, fire, and get hit. Many Japanese ships are smashed and sunk but goal always remains the same PROTECT the shipping inside the harbor. This they do. Many ships purposefully attempt to draw the Allies into the minefields and closer to the guns of the coastal defense. This they do as well. The American PT boats get crushed within the minefields. Over TWO DOZEN of them are hit by CD or take mines! Allied vessels work closer to their gunnery targets and take heavy CD fire (at least 10-12 Allied warships are hit) and smack into the ever present mines (over 10 mine explosions are heard during the turn). Put simply--it is a maelstrom of violence.

Daylight comes.

Wrecks fill the area outside the harbor. The Japanese lose 15 E-Class escorts, an AK, 2 SC, 4 PB, and an MGB. Allied losses are hard to imagine. Lookouts claim at least 3-4 American DDs are sunk in the minefield as well as several cruisers hit. Gunnery reports are compiled and the CLAIMED results are impressive.

Now the AA crews go over to alert. The snarl of nearly 200 Japanese Fighters flying CAP becomes the background sound for the rest of the day.

Several Allied Fighter Sweeps occur but are handily brushed aside. Once the Fighters have tried to smack down the aircover, dozens of B-24s bore in from multiple AFs in the NW and W. As has happened two other time in the last week, these bomber crews are jumped but well over 100 Fighters and GET CHEWED UP! Another 40-50 brave crews are killed. Bombs fall but do little damage.

The CAP holds.

By the time the suns sets, Fusan, KOREA is left behind as five TFs of AKs and APs make good their escape carrying 25,000 support troops that can be used effectively elsewhere.

Korea may be lost but this day is rated a success by Imperial General HQ.

A good operation and escape. I don't think I would enter a heavily fortified harbor like that. Truthfully, should it even matter to Dan that the troops left? Perhaps his only concern was to harvest VP. But then again, if he managed to catch the APs and AKs it would have been different. However, taking Fusan itself should garner a haul of VP.

If you look at this as being the closing days of the campaign and both sides fighting over VP then damage to ships is just as important as sinking. Any capital ship damaged is basically out of the war.

I think I got Dan's blood up after taking some serious shots to last two days and so I KNEW he would come. In all reality we will be done within 7-10 turns, however, the Japanese don't know that. I pull out the Base Forces, Air HQ, Engineers, and AA units. They will live to fight again.

He said THIS turn will be wild. I replied that that was doubtful. We're done in Korea and have pulled out Fighter Cover as well. Now if he strikes at Shiminoseki, Fukouka, or Nagasaki THEN there will be serious fighting in the skies over those bases.

Air
The Allies do work to gain some traction after the last set of baffling days to them. Instead of pounding Fusan, the Allied High Command decides to fly fighter Sweeps over nearly all major Japanese cities. I am sure that the results--we hope--are encouraging for the Allies.

Number of Japanese Fighters over given city:
Tokyo 124 F
Nagoya 182 F
Osaka 88 F This city is smacked pretty good by 2EB and 96 B-29.
Yokohoma 90 F

LOOKS pretty weak. By design this is so. Deciding that, after telling Dan his Intel of 1,500+ Fighters in the Home Isles was more like half that, Japanese Fighter Command takes a big risk and puts only about 1/3 of available Fighters up while bringing home all the Fighters covering Fusan. Hopefully emboldened, the Allies will run into nearly THREE times these numbers over the exact same bases. PLEASE come in!

Ground
Singapore
The Allies storm across the Johore and smash into Japanese Defenses. They get a 1-3 result with Forts--6. Casualties are Japan 2,469 (8 Squads Destroyed), 99 G, and 10 V for the Allied 8,646 (237 Squads destroyed), 154 Guns, and 122 Vehicles. Supply is great at 20,000 and the AF is filled with nearly 600 planes.

Sea
Sabang
The British Eastern Fleet appears just north of Great Nicobar and flies small strikes against shipping at Sabang. The two strikes are mauled. Hopefully, he will approach to six hexes. Bring in a 49 plane Frank and 48 plane George Group to cover 36 FB Kamikazes and 68 well-trained Judy DB.

SS Action
A group of six I-Boats have entered the waters of west Australia.

May 1st
I-193 SINKS AK Demodocus with 2TT and hits AK Khandalla with another just off Albany.

May 2nd
I-207 hits TK Aristophanes with a single TT near Albany.

FYI
On the sunk screen this turn appeared five US DD and CA Canberra. All the DDs are attributed to mines and the CA to 8" shells. Those DDs would be REAL NICE if actually sunk!

The Imperial Palace

The Cabinet Meeting occurs as scheduled in the early morning and the 'normal' business is dealt with as reviews of the previous day's action are presented. General Tojo Hidecki and Navy Minister Yamamoto Isoroku glower at each other from each side of the table. The men hate each other. Tojo led the country into this disaster and, though not Premier now, he still wields immense power through his post as Army Minister. Yamamoto, despite choosing to his risk life to ascend to Naval Minister to stop this war from ever happening, prepared his beloved Kaigun for the war he never wanted. His missing two fingers are really bothering him on this day. Despite being lost all those years ago at Tsushima he still 'feels' them and silently wishes for his Katana to use against his nemesis who, even now, is posturing about the strength of the Home Islands and how no barbarian could ever successfully land on the sacred soil of Dai Nippon.

As the bickering grows, it suddenly becomes clear that the Emperor intends to speak. Rarely done before, the young Hirohito reads a poem written by his grand-father the Emperor Meiji:

The seas of the four directions—
all are born of one womb:
why, then, do the wind and waves rise in discord?

Stunned silence follows and, suddenly, a sound not heard in Tokyo since the war began occurs. The wailing of the Air Raid alarms begin being heard throughout the city. The Allies have not dared to attack Tokyo. Surely they know that only doom awaits them? Normally there are nearly 500 Fighters protecting the city. Only a scant 125 Fighters take to the air (no one knows that there are many more but it is noticed nonetheless) and do battle with three formation of Allied Fighters. Dog Fights breakout over the city and a downed planes crashed scant blocks from the palace. Thankfully there are no bombers but SURELY they COULD if they wanted. That possibility is quickly noted by many people.

The combination of the poem and the air attack set two men's plans into motion...

Something MUST be done!

This is the IJN Azura. Why do you get a screenshot of her? Simple.

The Azura is the final warship to be built by the Empire of Japan. She is commissioned this day and all other work is ordered stopped. Japan was still building DDs, E-Class Escorts, and two remaining I-Boats. All are now stopped and done.

The workers are ordered home and plan to join the Self-Defense Forces of Imperial Japan. Though they have accomplished great things and kept their nation in the war their services are no longer needed.

Kobe

Within sight of the great naval port, Battlecruiser Kongo sinks. Many attribute it to the recent battle fought with Alaska. While true, others claim she sank from simple eghaustion. three-and-half years of constant stress, strain, and battle kills the old gal. She takes with her over 700 crew. News is sent to Tokyo.

Yokohoma
The four remaining heavy cruisers of Combined Fleet (Maya, Chikuma, Atago, and Kumano arrive with six DDs providing escort. A few hours behind them comes BC Kirishima (now the LAST of pre-war Capital Ships) and 3 E-Class escorts. The weary crews drop anchor.

Tokyo
Naval Ministry
Sitting at his mahogany desk in the Naval Ministry, Adm. Yamamoto strongly suspects what is to come. His nemesis, Tojo, is desperate and must be planning some sort of action. He needs help to counter these possible plans. STUPID FOOLS of the army. He had counseled against war, resisted as long as he could, and now his Fleet and Nation were on the verge of total annihilation. Staring up at the ceiling he contemplates options for quite some time and reaches a decision.

Yamamoto summons an orderly and dictates orders. At Yokohoma, the recently arrived warships receive immediate orders to enter Tokyo Bay and have their Marines ready for an inspection by the Naval Minister himself.

Army Ministry
Near where Yamamoto sits, Tojo Hidecki also dictates orders. There are numerous Army units being rebuilt in the Tokyo area. Three fine, young Colonels have been selected this day to lead their new recruits. These Colonels are perfect for the most important mission of their lifetimes. They are zealots...

Three Imperial Army Regiments are about to get new commanders and orders...

Hmm ... looks like Yamamoto and Tojo may spark more fireworks than the B29s!

Pends on when it gets reported. Sometimes it is immediate and at other times it takes a while.
