Hello My Readers.

The events over the last week have led me to temporarily suspend Dan and I's game.

Reasons are:

1. It appears I need to either upgrade or buy a new computer. Michael and I had a good chat this morning and he thinks the game is crashing due to RAM Issues or too full of a Hard Drive. IT makes a lot of sense to me since this computer is nearly 5 years old. I followed Bill's recommendations and hope to see an improvement. Will try to run the turn tonight and see. If I had ANY technological ability this would be far easier!

2. The toll taken on me by playing three games simultaneously has led to a strong feeling of burnout. For months I was doing turns during the morning, afternoon, evening, and middle-of-the-night. I had hoped that handing Herbie's game over to a new player and putting on hold Michael's game would help. Relieved of those commitments, I looked forward to each turn from Dan to see what craziness he had in store for the Empire! It felt like I was feeling better until the computer crapped out on me. What really told me there was burnout issues was that I really didn't feel an urge to fix things quickly and borderline didn't really care. I realized this on Sunday morning and that really freaked me out. Have been playing UV, WitP, and AE constantly for 13+ years. Guess burnout is only natural. Dan took over a year away from the Forum and two years away from our match when he experienced the same thing. It greatly helped him. Once I had the epiphany Sunday I tried to call Michael ASAP but didn't catch him until this morning. We talked it through and then I called Dan we had a great 30+ minute talk on the phone. As always, he was empathetic, understanding, and totally understood where I was coming from. Lord knows he did it earlier. Love the man to death. We can be at each other's throats yelling BANZAI or issuing the REBEL YELL and then totally separate from the game and talk as friends.

3. I have received three NASTY PMs by AFBs/Fans of his AAR that were completely rude, offensive, and WAY out of line. I was accused of cheating, not being 'man enough' to handle a late-war game, etc... Really served to push me right over the edge. Taking the moral high ground, I have not responded to these messages and will not name names here. I may send them to our moderator so he can see. It vividly reminded me of why Dan left the game when he did for very similar reasons years ago.

4. Life is CRAZY presently. I've mentioned this over and over since school got out. Family time MUST take priority and I am following the right path here until school re-starts. Someone commented about thinking I owned my Subway Franchise a while back. Paula and I are now officially entering negotiations to buy our LaSalle store as well as the store 12 miles south of here in Platteville. Ownership will be a HUGE step and we greatly look forward to it. Once past the family and work, our commitment to the LaSalle Area Historical Society has grown. In serving as the current President, we are aggressively working to buy a building (or takeover an old school house) to create a local community museum. This is another big commitment that has a marvelous up-side if we can gain the building.

Just thought the readers should understand that many elements and events have gone into making this very difficult decision. Dan and I are looking at taking a month-long siesta and then picking it up again in mid-August. This is our agreed upon plan.

In doing this it is my FERVENT hope to re-charge my batteries! I've decided that there will be some updates here as well as some serious time spent working on a new Mod. Mod work always serves to fire me up and clear my mind. Love the thinking and work that goes into creating a new variant/whole new Mod.

This is where we are at. Am sorry to put things on hold and I hope you understand. We're not done---just taking a break. Apologies are in order so here they are.

Warmly,
John

Send em along to the moderator. One of the many, many nice thing about this forum is that political talk of any kind is not tolerated. It leads to uncivil discourse. There is more than enough of that in the world these days, you should not have to tolerate it here. Sorry to paraphrase but those 3 certainly do not represent most AFB's. Tend to whats important and we look forward to your return. Peace

I am hoping for a speedy pickup... To me, this game is just now getting really interesting. It was fun before, but now it is truly interesting! 1944 and 1945 baby! The few, the proud...tough to get to as a JFB.

I think if you posted on the tech forum about your problems you would get prompt and good advice on how to fix the problem very quickly, with the least amount of frustration. That has been my experience...because dollars to donuts somebody had the exact same problem earlier.

The collective knowledge and life experience on the board is truly spectacular - take advantage of it for once instead of always giving to the community with your mods.

I know for me, having just gone thru a zillion and one problems (seemingly) with Windows 10 - I felt quite discouraged about playing too; having to work thru all the problems and play seemed too much.

But I posted a few general threads about the joy that is computers and in no time the rest of the board members raised my spirits with their stories and posts -- and, for now at least, those memories are fading and I can only remember the pummeling I am taking in the game.

I wish my kids were 12 and 9 again. Instead they are 24,22, 19 and two of them are in a world of dangerous places.

Cherish your time with them.

Real life always has priority. I find playing AE as an escape and relaxation, if it ceases to be then it is time to focus on other things. I use to play golf as a young man everyday all summer long but after several years I found it more frustrating than fun so I quit and I have felt no loss over it. I hope you have a fine summer and your life adventures make you happier than you ever hoped.

Take all the time you need, John. I think a little breather will help out with both your fatigue and figuring how best to refocus and strategize for your game going forward. I'm looking forward to seeing how things turn out. Family and real life always come first, however. We'll be waiting.

Sorry to hear you received negative PMs. That's clearly not right. Although a lot of us are highly entertained by your game with CR, we'll survive a hiatus as you prioritize the important things in life.

Looking forward to some gripping entertainment post-August.

Cheers,
CC

Greatly appreciate the comments guys. Really do!

Just want some down time. My crazy boys are growing up SOOOOO fast that it really scares me a bit. I am sure many of you know what I mean!

Michael and I chatted today and we are working on a potential new project that might be really exciting. We'll keep everyone Posted once we make the decision to go/no go with it.

I'm glad you found some resolution. You are not the first nor will you be the last to take on more than you can handle. Coupled with the changes in your life and business, it will probably
be a very good idea to take some time off and do other things. I can not hardly believe that people would send nasty PMs about this. At the very least you were able to do a controlled
shut down, which is much better than just quitting. I do hope you find the time and the enthusiasm to continue on.

This match is in NO WAY over. We're just taking a reasonable hiatus. Course the last time we did that it was two YEARS before re-starting! This will be much shorter. Trust me. The show will go on!

Thanks for all your work with the mods and AARs over these years John. I've had a lot of fun playing them and learning the game through your posts. Enjoy a nice break from the game.

I enjoyed reading the dueling AARs of this encounter. It was like Mad Magazines Spy VS Spy, one planned a move the other planned a counter-move then the first countered the counter-move. It was educational and entertaining to watch the whole thing unfold.

Got the game to run for the first time since things crashed a couple of months ago. Had to buy a new PC (and a ROCKING 25" monitor screen) and do an all new install but things are FINALLY working.

Need to get some things ironed out in RL and then we are good to go...

...if you don't mind that is...

Maybe it is time to 'fix' CR's issue he brought up in reviving a 5+ year old thread.

What say you?

I just sent Dan his first turn in three months. We shall struggle on and move forward.

Have asked him to give me a call (he has really been in-and-out of the office this week) so we can talk some.

The simple reality is that life is VERY busy right now and I am dealing with some potentially scary health issues. Simply say PSA=Prostate and you have a rough idea of things. Don't have a clear idea to as to seriousness/severity of the issue and this, along with crazy busy family schedule, is what led to suspend the game over the last three months. Should have answers on the health side of things within a couople of weeks. Additionally, to say that I am burned out, after 11 years of continuous play, is not an understatement.

I am asking for a slow down in play where I don't feel like I HAVE to do a turn or two every day. Want to keep moving but at a reduced pace so things stay tolerable and within threshold of enjoyment.

Months ago my game files got corrupted and led to the initial cessation of game play. Since that time I have gotten a great big, LOVELY 25" monitor and a new CPU. Did the game install about a month ago and then did all the Mod changes and updates. That really SUCKED and ate up a bunch of time. Ran the suspect turn about 10-14 days ago and saw that everything is fixed and running properly. The remaining time has been deciding whether or not to roll forward.

November 21, 1943

The game crashed on a crazy day! I had ordered a pair of BBs and 6 DDs to bombard one of Dan's new bases on NW New Guinea. This was a simple in-and-out bombardment and it--evidently--went haywire with the BB TF staying at the destination FOR THE WHOLE DAY outside the range of LRCAP from my 4 CV and 4 CVL NW of the TF. Dan's CVs went to work and threw nearly 500 bomber sorties at the TF. Four of the DDs were sunk and the BBs (Ise and Nagato) were creamed by about 15-20 bombs each. NASTY!

While looking terrible during the replay, I was shocked at what I found when getting ready to do orders. Both BBs have damage but not very much for what they endured. One has SYS 21 and other SYS 32. No TTs were dropped--thank the gods--so flotation is excellent. In a horrific situation the news couldn't have been a lot better.

Order the BBs to retire to Peleliu where the CVs and Peleliu will provide about 300 Fighter's worth of CAP. Should be OK.

The Kaigun
With this disaster, my fleet is a mess. I have decided--after looking at this from a perspective of nearly three months time--to retire the main elements of the Kaigun and let repair occur. There are a number of carriers nearly repaired from that disastrous CV battle. I need them as well as new construction coming. Want my naval pilots to draw new airframes as well as train. A few weeks to a month should help...

Will shift to LBA and small units/SS to contest Dan for the next several weeks of game time.

Losses for the day were 3 DD not 4. The Washington simply 'appeared' doubt that is anything but a Japanese 'happy thought!'

Appreciate that thought Dave. It was a rude surprise to have to be worried about this while at the relatively young age of 50. Not NICE!

Dan and I had a lovely chat yesterday. It is always pleasant when I call and tell his Secretary that 'just tell him LaSalle, Colorado is calling' or I look at the ringing phone and it says 'Georgia Backroads' on it. As said many times with each of us, our respect and understanding for each other is quite high. He is a good man and friend. Ten years ago he was there for a very difficult time in my life and that debt can never be repaid.

Sooooooo...we chatted and have agreed to re-starting slowly. I am figuring a turn every day or so. We've got (no big surprise) SYNC issues and so that needs to be watched.

The turn came back yesterday and I am busy at work or shopping until this evening so I'll start working on it then. My eldest son (John) is almost 13 and has grown over six inches the last couple of months. He doesn't fit into ANYTHING! His pants look like capris...NOT good! Got to get that fixed.

Will Post a bunch once I get started on the turn.
