A reasonable choice, but for that position I would nominate Jeff Lowpe, who is currently getting crushed after attempting to take Los Angeles and San Diego.

John strikes me more as akin to "Fighting Joe" Hooker, who could play a superb game of poker until it came time for the last raise, and then he would lose confidence. Where is that Christmas present?

He propounds to be a Southern boy but he is the most U.S. Grant like admiral that I know. He brings everything to the party and does not fret too much over losses as long as it get the win in the end.

John has dropped off the grid a bit this weekend, the earmark of a player not eager to dive back in. He's not jazzed about anything at the moment. He probably doesn't have anything in the works. I think the trap sprung at Torres Strait was probably what had generated a great deal of interest on his part. His level of interest probably won't increase until he comes up with a new plan or luck smiles on him (a sub attack or the like).

So he's almost certainly not committing KB past the Torres Strait. He'll retire to the Coral Sea or the Solomon Sea. I don't want it there, complicating Death Star's eventual egress. So I'm working on a plan to ramp up things in the DEI so that he has to respond.

The Civil War analogy is Sherman in Georgia. After he takes Atlanta, the Rebels conclude that they can sever his supply line and force him to retreat. So Hood moves north. But Sherman doesn't retreat. There's nothing to prevent him from moving on Augusta or Macon or Columbus or Selma.

At the moment, John is sitting on my "LOC" to Oz. But there's probably nothing that can stop Death Star and the Herd from moving deeper into the DEI. LBA will always be a concern, but probably only subs, combat ships or KB can really stop DS. I'd like to draw KB to Big Tent, so moving forward, deeper into the DEI, is under consideration. The situation is fluid and will morph depending on what John does with KB. But for now, the plan is to flex some muscle and make some noise in the DEI.

I don't know, Dan. I see a significant difference between your situation and that of Sherman's army. In his day an army truly did march on its stomach and thus could get by on "liberated" supply. Your fleet needs fuel, and unless you move on and capture Balikpapan, you are sooner or later going to have an issue with the Death Star being cut off from your supply sources. Are you able to get enough fuel up to Normantown to indefinitely supply the Death Star?

I didn't do a good job of explaining the analogy. I don't intend to stay in DEI indefinitely. I have enough fuel for another month or so of operations (and can extend that, if necessary, by refueling from xAK fuel tanks). That should be enough time to complete the remaining Big Tent and Third Ring objectives. If John commits KB to the DEI, that will clear the route of egress through the Torres Strait. So I'm working on ideas to motivate him to commit KB. Ramping up offensive operations to include Bathurst Island, Flores Island, Waingapoe, etc. are some of the possibilities.

No word from John III since he Saturday morning, when he apologized for not sending a turn and said he'd send one that afternoon. He was last seen fleeing into the wilderness, tossing aside his garments one by one, muttering oaths about the Torres Strait. I'm a little concerned about his state of mind. If I don't hear from him by tomorrow, I'll send him an email.

On the other hand, it seems to me that if the KB simply stays where it is for a month, you should be able to open up a new route elsewhere. (Grant re-establishing his supply line at Vicksburg. )

Dan, You do realize that John has other priorities than flipping turns? Father of two young men, manager of a small restaurant which can always throw a monkey wrench into things, a wife that seems to always have a 'honey to do list' for him, deacon at church, local historical society, and now plans to remodel the kitchen. I usually get surprise phone calls when he is mobile (going to get more supplies for his Subway store). He often promises to call me later in the day or the next day, but usually doesn't do so. I spoke with him late last week and I didn't get any comments or sense that he wasn't jazzed to continue playing on. We did discuss your game and my two at length along with prez politics. Tuesday is inventory night for him, so he should have time to send you one today, but be proactive and drop him a quick email right now.

Yes, I realize those things, but it doesn't take long to send an email, "Sorry, no turn coming today or tomorrow or however long."

Third Ring: CA Pensacola TF bombards to good effect, while the invasion troops stand down to recover fatigue. The replay screen (below) suggests that the enemy garrison is relatively weak, but the actual combat report shows and AV of 156. First probing attack probably two days away. This will take awhile unless supply is a serious issue.

Big Tent: Deliberate attack at Ambon comes of at 1:1 and drops forts to 2. This base is ripe for the taking, as the enemy garrison is really on fumes now. John will have to reinforce or it will fall soon, probably two attacks from now. 33rd Div. is 98% prepped for Ambon, so I may rest it two days before attacking again. The USN will continue to impose a blockade. Today three DDs sank five enemy MTBs.

S-46, on patrol between Kendari and Flores Island, put two TT into CL Nagara. I don't think she went under. But that's an important strike, as John is woefully short of light cruisers.

Paddle, operating a few hexes off the Japanese coast, encountered Yamato and Mutsu. I assume these are outbound and making for the DEI. That's where I'd send them, anyway.

John pulled KB back. I thought he might be frustrated enough to go after the CVEs at Cooktown, but he's not taking that bait. Will he send KB to the DEI via New Guinea's north coast? That's what I'd do, but he may still have his cap set on a Torres Strait ambush.

Death Star and the Herd moved between New Guinea and Taberfane (map to follow later). I've divided the merchantmen into eight TFs. Seven of these carry reinforcements (Saumlaki, Babar, Taberfane, Kai-eilenden, Boela, Morotai, and Ambon) and one carriers invasion troops fro Wessel Island.

Groote Eylandt fell on auto attack today.

Death Star sucked out the remain fuel today. All AOs are empty, which is always a sobering sight. I still have 150k fuel aboard transports (xAK) at Boela or with DS.

I considered moving forward into the DEI immediately, but elected not too. The lack of a secure LOC is a priority. I want to open that up so that there's a route of egress should something go awry. So, the first order of business is to unload the reinforcements at Babar, et al. The second order of business is to see if Ambon is ripe to fall without further ground troops. If so (and I think so), then I have 2nd Marine Div. ready to go. She may be used to reinforce at Merauke, to invade Gove (Oz) or (unlikely, but not impossible)to invade multiple bases like those on Flores Island.

That looks promising at both Ambon and Merauke. Ambon especially is an important base IMHO and would definitely cap off a successful Big Tent.

Do you think the Japanese will hold KB just out of range of the Torres Strait, trying to bait you back into or through it? Given your fuel situation you do need to come out sometime, someplace, right?

John's had KB in place for weeks. This and his email commentary make it clear that springing and ambush in the Torres Strait is dear to his heart. He put a lot of though and preparation into it. I think it will be hard for him to let go. But if DS just hangs around in the DEI as the tumor continues to grow, at some point he's got to pull KB back, just to keep the Allies honest. (I think, anyhow).

I should have enough fuel for at least another four weeks of ops in Big Tent. All combat and carrier TFs are pretty much topped off. xAKs hold another 150k in fuel, which should be sufficient to handle the next two to four weeks. The emergency reserve is the "organic" fuel in the tanks of all the merchant ships.

Very interesting since that sub was launched on July 29, 1942.

Does it still allow the "upgrade?"

With Death Star returning to Big Tent, an elaborate dance will ensue.

First, troop transports will bring reinforcements (especially engineers and base forces) to the key islands on the southern front: Babar, Saumlaki, Taberfane, and Kai-Eilenden. That should take about three days.

Even while that is ongoing, whether Ambon will fall without Allied reinforcements will become clear (it will unless John can get his own reinforcements in). If Ambon does fall, that eliminates the second step. At that point, 2nd Marine Division is available for a different mission.

The most likely mission is to then move on Bathhurst Island and Wessel Island, and possibly on Gove, to secure the southern side of the LOC. Bathhurst and Wessel appear unoccupied. Gove will require some work.

When that is done, DS returns to the DEI to attend to the final distribution of supply missions, concentrating on the major bases of Ambon, Boela, Morotai, Sorong and Manokwari. When that is finished, Big Tent is essentially complete. I'll leave behind at least three combat TFs (and possibly some CVEs, more as bait than anything else).

DS and the Herd then make for the Gulf of Carpentaria to finish of Merauke. From there it moves to Normanton to pick up the Horn Island invasion troops. That's where things may (or possibly may not) get dicey. I think Horn will be a tough conquest, and John will get the clash he's been looking for, assuming he's still in position and still wants it.

All of this should indeed occupy the next month. So Big Tent/Third Ring are on schedule.

There is then a major question. Allied transports must egress to return to Hawaii for Fun House. The question is whether to send the carriers to Hawaii or to keep them in the Coral Sea, able to respond to any crisis in Big Tent. That's probably what I'll do, at least for some time.

Big Tent: 4th USMC Tank Battalion (with 48 Stuarts) attacks solo at 1:2 odds, appears to drive adjusted AV to zero, doesn't touch forts, but destroys five squads and disables 10. I think Ambon will fall to the infantry tomorrow. I owe a Forumite (BBFanboy, I think) a thank you for suggesting, weeks ago, alternating attacks at Ambon. I was apprehensive about committing a small tank unit solo, but the tank commander seems to know what to do. He doesn't fling his tanks forward in a suicide run, but stings and then breaks off. The alternating attacks seemed to work very well.

A gaggle of IJN subs are posted in shallow water between Ambon and Boela, trying to pick off the USN combat ships imposing the blockade. There have been a number of engagements the past few days, with no hits scored by the subs. It's good to have them up there shooting at DDs as opposed to hunting DS.

DS and the Herd take station near Taberfane. The merchant TFs are fanning out to deliver reinforcements and supply. This part of the mission should take about three days. If, during the interim, Ambon falls, then the next step will be to occupy Wessel and Bathurst. I don't have the means (enginners, aviation support, supply) to turn these into big bases short term, but I'm hoping the sudden prospect of an Allied blockade at Darwin will goad John into improvident action.

Signals intercept makes me wonder if KB might be exiting the Solomon Sea bound somewhere distant; probably the DEI but possibly elsewhere.

Third Ring: I let the troops at Merauke rest again. Probing deliberate attack the day after tomorrow.

The reconfiguration of Allied cargo/fuel TFs continue, as I try to boost levels in Oz.
