Somebody asked while back whether there was way of searching through multiple combat report files and find references to specific units/locations etc.

This is perfect description for "grep" which unfortunately is a Unix utility. I was never able to find a user friendly Windows equivalent that I could recommend.

Until now!!!

The screenshot below is a search for the text string "BB" in my WITP-AE\SAVE directory and was as easy as typing in the search folder and the text to be found. It's freeware and installation was a breeze as well!!

CNet rates it 5 star. http://download.cnet.com/GrepWin/3000-20432_4-75338321.html

Available from the authors' site: http://tools.tortoisesvn.net/grepWin.html

It also does text search and replace so you can use it for lots of other tasks.

(For advanced users: Search is based on regular expressions so you can get really specific with your search criteria. )

I'll be using grepWin for a lot of other tasks.

This is a generic tool if you just want a quick and dirty file search without any setup or going into the full analysis.

You can also use NotePad++. Just open all your combat reports as individual tabs within NotePad++, hit Control-F, type your search string, and click on "Find All in All Opened Documents". It'll even give you a nice organized list of every found instance of "BB" in each file.

You can also use the 'Find in files ..' from Notepad++ to look through files in a directory, just filtering to specific file extensions.
The results are listed and just clicking on the result will open the file for you.

Did normal humans ever use emacs? Anything LISP based is automatically suspect.
