Status: offline 		I apologize for this but I just need to vent...

The department I work in is essentially three people X, Y and myself. Whenever I do or say something wrong X always seems to say, "Me and Y think that you shouldn't have said or done it this way." (Y is sort of the quiet type) Whenever X or Y say or do something I think is wrong I generally say something like, "I don't think that was the right thing to say or do."

Now my question which no one here should be able to sufficiently answer since they don't work with me I suppose is: Am I too overbearing or something that it takes two people to put me in my place? What is with this "me and Y" stuff? I'm starting to feel like I'm not part of the team. And we all know that "team work" is the magic solution to all corporate problems.

Last night I said something wrong in an email (at least by some opinions) and today I had three people (including someone from another department) standing in front of me demanding an explanation. I stood my ground and didn't flinch but it wasn't easy.

Note, none of these people are really my boss. Our boss inhabits a different office significantly away from us. Of course X is sort of the "team lead" and reports directly to the boss most of the time where as I don't. So X sort of has the inside track on everything..a significant advantage in office politics.

Anyone else here have this difficulty in life? Am I wrong to feel like X and Y are ganging up on me or to feel alienated from the "team"? (Yes I know it's a question no one here probably knows the answer to) but it just seems like when I'm not there the two are often talking behind my back and I think X is the instigator of it. I never go over to either X or Y behind their back and say, "did you see what X or Y said or did". I generally speak for myself and don't seek strength in numbers. Of course that is probably my fatal flaw. Maybe I'm a glutton for punishment. I should be trying to manipulate X and Y against each other!

Anyway it was an unnerving day at work and I'm just curious if anyone else out there has similar troubles?

I think you already know the answer to that question when you stated;

It's not in your M.O.. It would be too transparent.

Every place has these problems. I've been on both sides; employee and employer so I know a little about those people we politely call co-workers.

The only advice I might have is to do the very best you can do at all times. The cream will rise to the top.

If X is being petty, any intelligent supervisor will see through it and your good work will speak for itself. Clearly Y is lacking in character if he cannot confront you himself so it would be no surprise if he was just a non-willing participant himself.

If all 3 people feel the same about the email I would suggest stepping back and really trying to see it from their point of view as if there was never any friction from X. That could be clouding your judgement. Upon doing so, if you were wrong, I'd apologize.

I've worked at places where it seemed there were more backstabbers than just those that were concerned about putting out a product. I'd work with my X and he would talk crap on Y. Then I'd work with Y and he'd talk crap on X. I'd get both of them and they would act like best friends. Makes me sick. I just keep my mouth shut, do my job, and if I have a problem with either X or Y I ask them personally and get right to the crux of it all. IMO, if they are not ready to resolve whatever it is then they are in fact petty and not man enough to waste any more time worrying about. They'll never change.

So if I were you I'd consider having a talk with X first and try to clear up any source of contention. A little tact goes a long way, mind you.

Above all, it must not affect anyone's performance. If it does, there will be a change.

It never is. But it's that same pride that convinced you of the need to apologize in the first place. You expect it of others and you hold yourself to a high standard, no matter how uncomfortable.

Status: offline 		On a different note, I'd like to work for Matrix, as I've had experience with playing wargames and working with designers, plus being a former forum moderator. I'm nearing my retirement with the state, and I think this would be a great opportunity to extend my career by working in an environment that has occupied many of my free hours over the last 30 years. Hell's bells, what gamer would NOT want to do this as a supplement to their retirement?

Status: offline 		We've had a lot of applications and are still working through them. Everyone will receive a reply though I know we've not sent them out yet! The reason we're recruiting is because we're overloaded and the problem is that makes it hard to find time to do the recruitment.... oh the irony.
