My fine army marching to Singapore decided to ruin itself with 26k losses in a spontaneous shock attack.

I've been annoyed by these uncontrollable shock attacks for a while, but never this much.

Is there a recipe for how to avoid them? Do I need to choose a low aggression army commander for the approach march? Does "move" and "combat" order make a difference? Probably arriving in smaller groups?

If you cross a river or land in an atoll, you will trigger a shock attack... this is unavoidable

you want to change orders to "combat" before entering the hex
and you want to arrive in big numbers so that "pain" is spread
