Playing turn 1 as Soviet. Found a rifle corps in an exposed situation and scoped out its leader. He had a very good rating so I thought I'd promote him up to a safer berth.

The general is Vasily Yushkevich - unit is 44th Rifle Corps. Located near Minsk - at least as I start turn 1 that's where he is. 44th Rifle Corps reports to 13th Army. Ratings are very solid for USSR:

Infantry: 6
Admin: 6
Morale: 6
Political: 6
Initiative: 4
Mech: 3

Funny thing is, he doesn't show on the Commander Report and neither does his unit. (I did screen shots but apparently can't post them for 7 days after my tenth post?) As a test, I replaced him with a non-entity. Now the unit shows up in CR, but Yushkevich still doesn't. And he doesn't show up in the list of potential replacements when replacing other generals.

Any ideas? Unit's not frozen. Might have been displaced in the first German turn - don't know where he started out. Doesn't seem likely as both attached divisions are nearby and untouched.

If you look for him in the editor he starts in the HQ 1 hex NW of Minsk stacked with an infantry unit. It's possible that the corps HQ disbanded on the Soviet turn 1 of the logistics phase. The corps HQ begin to disband in the game, IIRC from the first turn. It is also possible the unit was forced to retreat on turn 1, but if it didn't disband, it should be on the map somehwere.

Thanks for the reply. That's where he was and his divisions were undisturbed. So that's not it.

Playing turn 2 now. I moved him out of harms way His unit shows up on Commander Report now, but he still doesn't. Hope he'll show up soon so I can promote him up. If not, I'll put decent reinforcements in his corps and assign it to a good Army. Until, of course the Corps level goes away. Hopefully he'll survive the dissolution of his unit and maybe then I'll be able to put him to higher use.

Interesting. He was here June 22. There are a couple more stealth generals as well.

Make a CSV dump from the editor and check the leader file. The date given is when a leader becomes (re-)assignable and visible in the CR even if they start the game on-map. I'd guess it's a promotion date issue.

Thanks for the suggestion. Running a stock 1941 Campaign, so fired up the editor for that one.

The CSV shows a bunch of German Generals that show up mid-game (i.e. have Available Years/Months after 6/22/41) that have non-zero delay numbers.

The CSV also shows a bunch of Soviet Generals that have initial year/month after 6/22/41 .... but no Soviet generals have anything but zeros in the delay field..... In fact, in this data only some of the Germans have non-zeros in the delay field - for all the other countries, even the generals appearing mid-war have zeros.

I wonder if part of the program uses the 'Available Year/Month' fields and the other part uses the 'Delay' field?

Curious.

Most probably - how the game engine does things is a little like contemporary Kremlinology.
