What was 2002 to you guys?

To me it was the year I woke up (that's a personal statement though, but it has nothing to do with wargaming, so don't try connect it with any of my posts hehe).

In the field or wargaming, of course many things did happen for me.

First neat to happen I think, was Margaret (lass I know online from Texas), sending me Lost Victories in the mail. If you want to know the full story locate it in Hall of Heroes.

Next she magnifies herself by sending me Steel Panthers 2 Modern Battles, and asks me to accept it as a gift.

I was able to send a number of cds to friends of mine online this year (generally mushy music selections to girls I chat with or anime music videos and or series).
In two cases, I was able to send something neat to wargamers I know through wargaming forums.
One of those sent me the last 2 Mega Campaigns, so I now have all 3. Thanks man, you are what makes wargaming a great hobby.

I have seen other examples of wargamers helping wargamers. You guys are great too.

On forums, I have seen myself get a bit goofy.
I am thinking of getting back to my roots in the new year though.

I have enjoyed becoming one of the more well known names at Matrix. I have always enjoyed being helpful to anyone that I can be so to.

I have also discovered some other great forums.
This is Sarge's best of his discoveries below.

http://www.militarygameronline.com/forums/
http://www.warfarehq.com/forums/index.php
http://www.wargamer.com./forum/wargamer/

I have also discovered these cool places below.

http://www.hpssims.com/index.htm
http://www.vasl.org/vassal/Download.html
http://www.peachmountain.com/5star/index.asp
http://www.avalanchepress.com/line_Panzer.php
http://www.cdaccess.com/index.htm
http://www.theblitz.org/index.php
http://www.manyhighways.com/sandbox

These places all gave 100%. If I didn't list it, I didn't give it 100%.
(oh just to be accurate, I have not listed Steel Panthers sites due to the fact they are all 100%:) )

On resolutions, hmmm.

I think in the upcoming year I am going to stop wasting time on the great RTS vs Turn debate. Not worth the time.
I am also going to stop reviewing games, I have actually played or otherwise. Not worth the time.
I think I will be trying to avoid threads, that have nothing to do with wargaming. Not worth the time.
I am going to stop pretending yet another wargame might be worth buying.
Once I have Combat Leader and Century of Warfare, you guessed it, anything else will be not worth the time.

Going to see if I can start getting into making some of my models, as I have been wasting a lot of my time heheh.

2002 in wargaming is rediscovery of PACWAR and WIR, my 2 favourites. Discovered a lot of chaps and some assh oles on this forum.

on personal ground, to much work this year, got 1 year older (doesn't help), 2002 is also the year we decided to stop having babies (3 seems to be enough) - a pity, it's the only thing i do correctly.

For 2003, i promise :
- not to get upset by some Euro vs US threads.
- drink less
- listen more

hehe forget it, i never keep my new year promises.

By the way CCB i preferred your old logo.

best regards

I was just paying homage to VF-17. A WW2 US Navy fighter squadron that flew Corsairs over the Pacific and had the 'Jolly Roger' [pirate flag] as their squadron emblem.

Les - please consider at least giving your opinion of a particular game if asked. That kind on information is invaluable to fellow gamers. You know my feelings about buying anything without getting the hands-on opinion of an actual player - I've been burneed too many times by fancy box art attached to diappointing products.

Don't give up on the RTS vs whatever debate, either. I for one still get confused by the blurring and overlapping in the industry, and I suspect this issue may gain importance in the future.

I wish you all the best for the coming year.

Rocky you actually make this jaded forum wanderer a bit happier eh.

I have been mucking about over at Battlefront's SC forum for the last month or so at most.

It's not currently about the game any more, its about forum members learning that most wargamers are to old to indulge teenage anti social behaviour for long.

As such I have not been overly successful in discussing the merits of new games.

I personally think, an experienced wargamer can glean a lot of expert opinion from sufficient postings, and not even have to see a wargame to sum it up reasonably reliably eh.

Take my to most bandied wargames of the last while for instance.

Strategic Command.
If a simple wargame set in WW2, using turns, limited in scope to the European portion of the conflict, and similar in realism to Axis and Allies for the computer sounds interesting, then its very low price tag is just icing on the cake.

It has a marginal AI, which doesn't matter a lot as the game is perfectly suitable to play against people. It has to many "gamey" effects that hopefully will get the boot in SC2 or whatever it's next incarnation gets called. But if goofy strategies that are possible in Axis and Allies don't bum you out, then the game is ok.

I don't currently know of any "software" troubles, and it has one of the best interfaces in gaming I have seen. I think the designer should be showing other game makers how to make games easy to run.

then there is

Hearts of Iron

I actually WANTED this game when I first heard of it. The whole war, and with detail I thought would be nice in SC but wasn't there.
Then I started to hear how it was from a company known for producing games that were often poorly made and buggy. And then I began to hear that it was yet another buggy game.
The AI is not escapable because it is an RTS game, so a crummy AI really counts here.
The game used a game style that was fine for a game that was set against decades or more of time.
But this engine was originally made popular in a colonizing game, something that is entirely worthless to depict WW2 at any level of realism.
It requires a level of suspension of disbelief I don't even allow in my roleplaying paper and pencil gaming.

But through it all, I get derided for not having been foolish enough to line up with 80-100 bucks to buy a game that any experienced wargamer can tell at a looooooong distance has no merit.
I have no respect for people that will buy a product just because they haven't bought a game recently. Yes I am not rich, I would not buy this game if I was.
There are other forms of wealth that have nothing to do with money, such as time. I can't believe that some people will spend their time on this game, even if they have more money than sense.

Final analysis, SC is not yet good enough for me, but I want a lot from my wargame. It is likely not a waste of money. I would suggest a person play the demo a dozen times. You will see if the detail level is enough, the demo is a good demo as demos go.

Hearts of Iron, no point in trying to rebutal me any who might, this game is worthless. I would rather watch paint peel. My housework is more fun.
This has nothing to do with my not being very pro RTS gaming, because I have seen RTS games that at least run.
I might not be in love with RTS, but I won't call em garbage just to say it.

Now I would never say that much on some forums, but at least here in Matrix land, wargamers stick to discussing wargames intelligently. Or at least, our community doesn't tolerate juvenile behaviour as if juvenile behaviour is not a problem.

And at this time, I want to thank Matrix, for running a tight ship, and being a very good example of how a forum should be run monitored and kept worth coming back to.

Les, I'm glad to have made a difference (good I hope) in your year. You helped mine. Glad to have made your online acquaintance.

I got HOI for Christmas this year and I'm not terrible impressed with it either. I dl'd and installed a patch that is supposed to make somewhat of a difference but I haven't tried it since. For me the game is just too busy. Probably why I am not a big fan of RTS.

Give me the objective, some assets to accomplish it with and let me get about my business. That's what happens when you cut your teeth on hexagonal grids, I guess.

Happy New Year to you buddy.

:D

Update.

Is it me or what?

Someone gave me SC the other day (karma thing or something I guess).

So I can progress to test it a bit beyond the demo.

Although hmmm HoI, I am fairly positive if someone gave me HoI I would probably immediately dump it on someone else, and let them be the next poster commenting on how it disappointed them.
