I should also have added Moo2 and Master of magic and the newer one who's title I can't recall, Age of magic 2 or something.

Imperialism 2 is now on GOG.

Well spotted, what. In order to avoid you any further embarrassment, one decided it would be kind to adopt the Minnsoda method of numbery stuff and county things.

It seems to me a game like this would be a good port to tablets. While tank battles 1944 is not SPWaW it reminds me of it very much.

Good question, I wonder my self. Wish they would make a major updated version.

What I find odd is that several of you join me in picking SPWaW as one of your all-time faves. Matrix Games has had several failed attempts at coming up with a successor to this game, but why is that? I honestly have no idea.

It would seem that a modernized tactical game with SPWaW's depth would be a natural choice, but so far they have come up empty. I have some suspicions as to why, but I won't speak of it any more. Let me leave this subject by stating that at one time many years ago, SPWaW was Matrix' flagship game. The ownership of the source code was bought up by Matrix, and the development of the game as it now stands was done by fans of it with assistance from Mike Wood, who was one of the original programmers. This is how the Enhanced Version came to be. It was a strange series of events, and I still don't understand what happened to this day why Matrix decided to wash its hands of it.

For Civ II I can't really remember - other than after visiting Egypt I played them for ages. But for Civ IV, yes, I think the English are the most played civ - you gotta love the Cross of St George

I also like playing the Russians, the Romans and the Portuguese.

I agree with pretty much everyones top games here. Some have jogged my memory aswell or I've kicked myself for missing them out. Dominions 3 for starters and UFO Enemy Unknown and X Wing vs Tie Fighter...and..I could more or less list everyones games here!! All I would say are classics in their own time and genre.

What is strange considering we are all wargamers is the overall lack of wargames in our lists.

3) Close Combat III/COI: The Russian Front

4) Duke Nukem, Colonization, Doom II, Medieval Total War, Age of Empires-AOK, IL2, Age of Mythology Titans

That is spot on. I have tried, and enjoyed, pc/platform games of every genre, but I always return to war games.

I would choose

1 - War in Russia by SSI and I still have the original box with 3.5" disk right behind me.
2 - All the old SSG Battlefront games
3 - I love TOAW3 and of course SPWAW would be top two if the graphics issue was fixed to be more crisp

My choices would be:

1. Civilization (stayed up many nights playing this one)
2. MOO2
3. Baldur's Gate series

All fun games and sucked up a lot of my spare time.
