And, conversely, I've had a sub forced to surface and sink some small escorts with torps and deck gun fire in a surface battle.

Sept 19th 1942 and time to take a pictorial tour.

In Burma the IJN has some CVLs/CVEs off the Burmese coast as well as what appears to be a mixed BB/CA TF. In response 4 USN and RN BBs as well as their cruiser and destroyer escorts decide to hold firm at Akyab. They are covered by about 140 RAF fighters while 2 USAAF squadrons are tasked to LRCAP Ramree. I've let him bomb there for the past week without interference so I'm hoping he'll have been lulled into a false sense of security.

Overnight I imagine we'll see surface combat. In response I've pulled the infantry-loaded amphibs back to Chittagong whilst the amphibs carrying my OMG are staying at Akyab and unloading. Its a risk since there's a possibility the IJN could blast through my covering forces but since I need to unload the OMG TF in order to reload it with infantry etc this TF needs to stay at Akyab for a few days and so I have to risk it.

Well subs fighting it out on the surface is fairly common. I had one sink a DD. I've never seen a BB on its own engage a surfaced sub though.

The situation in China. Damian has decided to stay and fight as there are now 3 additional units at Amoy and the number of troops there has increased from about 8,000 to 29,000. Well, that's 1.5 divisions of his strategic reserve drawn off into China

I'll attack, just in case, but I doubt I can break through 30,000+ IJA troops behind fixed defences.

And here you can see how I dislocated the riverline north of Katherine. Significant Allied forces are across the river. Overall my entire force is smaller than his BUT he can't stand and fight at the river because that would risk his entire force being cut off.... so he must retreat, even though his force is far superior and in supply.

In the right corner you can see one of the bases in PNG I occupied as part of operation sneaky. I also managed to sneak troops into the base 92 miles from Port Moresby - which I'm rather chuffed with

And lastly the Aleutians. You can see 3 IJN TFs moving on Attu. I think he's going to land in the next 2 to 3 days. In response I'm moving my CA and fast BB TFs from Adak to Amchitka. I'm also moving 15,000 engineers and aviation support troops to Amchitka. That will let it become a Level 2 airfield tomorrow and let me base DBs and TBs from it ( I have 150 DBs and 30 TBs left over from the carrier debacle earlier ) IF he tries to land at Attu and I judge there's an opening.

In addition I've loaded Adak with 160 B-17s and B-24s which should allow me to fly 280 tons of supplies per day into Shimushiri-Jima---- or mount CAP-wearying strikes on KB. We have an agreement that 4 Engined bombers shouldn't be used to conduct low-level naval strikes... I've looked at the AAA on IJN vessels and since 25mm AAA tops out at 7,000 feet I was thinking of sending my bombers in at 8,000 feet where they could draw the Zeroes to them and away from other airgroups.

I kept Anchorage selected while taking the picture so that you could get a sense of the strategic DB/TB and HB reserve I've been holding back and training up while my PT boats etc have kept him occupied.

This made both Damian and myself laugh, USS Mississippi stumbled across an IJN sub which my ASW forces had mauled the previous day. The IJN sub was surfaced so USS Mississippi fired a single salvo from its aft 14 inch batteries and got a direct hit. Scratch one IJN sub.

One shot, one kill BB vs sub kill. Is that a first in AE?

There must be an award in it for the gunner, pretty small target to hit it on the first shot. He'll be getting free drinks off that story for years to come!

Well, in this game their critical vulnerability is, I believe, whether or not I choose to remain on the forum and finish the game. Short of that I don't see Damian being able to turn this one around.

Apart from that though the critical vulnerability would be in xAP, AP/LST/LSI numbers. Without them opposed invasions cannot be carried out in an efficient manner - as I've been finding out due to the almost complete loss of xAPs/APs among the US fleet

People always focus on CVs etc etc etc and while they reduce losses and grant more freedom of movement they aren't really critical.

Yeah, I had an image of the Gun Captain betting his peers he could make the shot, them laughing at him and putting their money down, then everyone saying Damnnnnn when he scored the bullseye.

I'm looking forward to seeing how your air mobile offensive in CentPac goes, since that's the region where carriers are usually most critical for the advance.

Well, so far so good, I've moved forward over 1200 miles and created 2 strong bases each with roughly a regiment of troops as a garrison. I'm on track to relieve an island which housed 500+ AV of bypassed US troops and by rescuing the 4 Regiments of troops there I'll free sufficient infantry to enable me to garrison the 3rd phase of objectives. I've had bad experiences on this forum with a forumite intentionally leaking my plans to an opponent via PM so when something "sneaky" happens you shouldn't expect to get the details until such time as Damian uncovers it.

So, so far so good.

I don't normally post combat reports as my focus is more on strategy than how strategy plays out at the lowest levels. With that said sometimes posting a CR or portions of thereof is helpful.

Maizuru 3rd SNLF /1

So, he'll need a LOT more troops than that. Tomorrow the BBs will go in. I will send in my CA TF and the two modern BBs. Unfortunately they haven't gotten their upgrades yet and they enter battle in damaged states. Still, I do NOT need them to win. I just need them to not lose too badly. If they can delay unloading for a little while then even if they suffer heavier losses I'll have bought the time I need to bolster Attu Island and create problems for Japan.

Tomorrow I'll put fighters over Attu to kill some more of his fighters and then the next day, after the IJN CVs are weakened and their fleet is in more disarray, I'll bring in my dive, torpedo and level-bombers and seek to inflict significant losses.

Overall today I downed 43 Japanese aircraft for 11 of my own. My exchange rate since taking over is about 3 to 1 which is quite acceptable at moving things along rapidly.

I'm guessing you actually meant all the PT's were sunk -- 25 destroyers in one night would be a disaster for either side.

Still, locating five Japanese fleet carriers sounds like exceedingly useful intel.

Very curious that SS Shark only launched two torps at Soryu. A CV is certainly worth a shot from every tube on that end of the sub. I wonder if he was out of forward torps and only had the two rear tubes to shoot.
If that is not the case, I wonder if something in the leader stats influences this kind of weak attack?

Yes, 25 PT boats. Although in today's turn it looks like I'm not far off losing that number of DDs. I think I lost about a dozen in various naval combat, a dozen DDs, 1 CL, 1 CA and 1 BB have all been sunk in vicious surface combat around Attu island. Details to follow....

Is he really landing with battallions and indipendent regiments at Attu!?!? Damian made a huge mistake here!! He should have committed 2 full divisions, an Army HQ and possibly some artillery regiments... he will never win this battle. No matter how the naval thing will go, those IJA troops are doomed and were doomed from the very beginning

Concur with GreyJoy. Those should be ID and not small Inf Units. They shall not last long there.

Your concentration of SS is fascinating. I rarely use more then 12-15 in a single area because Japan doesn't have a large amount of SS. How successful does this work out for you? Do you feel the concentration is worth it? Certainly has worked for intel purposes!

Greyjoy,

Well, I think this is a case where its easy for people to point out a better way of doing things in theory while, in reality, that theoretical solution wouldn't have worked.

Basically when I took over Attu island was completely unsupported by any bases west of Dutch Harbour and Dutch Harbour was largely undeveloped. There were something like 50 fighters in the entire region and there was only a single Regiment guarding Attu.

Over the course of 3 weeks I managed to build 2 levels of forts, bring in 30,000 tons of supplies, over 400 AV, many engineer units and build up 2 more bases ( one to a Level 3 airfield and the other to Level 5 port and Level 4 airfield ) all while expanding Dutch harbour to a Level 6 port. I also brought in, during those three weeks, over 90,000 additional troops to the region. That's because I made the Aleutians the logistical focus of the entire Eastern side of the map.

Damian knew he was working against a clock and rather than waiting to have the PP to buy out two divisions he went with a collection of small units he had scattered around bolstered by a few regiments he could buy out. If anything he delayed 1 week too long and should have taken the risk of hitting me with less earlier rather than waiting even longer to buy out a division.

You'll note I've had no choice but to throw fragments of a division in also since my predecessor has committed regiments independently all over the map. Over the next month I plan to rescue trapped regiments and rebuild the regiments as divisions so that future operations have a more sustainable ground combat core.

In any case don't make the mistake of thinking this force ( 250 AV or so ) is a force Damian considers sufficient. No, this is just what he has been able to land on Attu without suffering disablements or loss. Let's look at the math.
1. About half of the force he landed was disabled on landing by defences etc. So that means he must have landed about 500 AV already.
2. One of his largest troopships sank taking with it 140 combat squads - that's an infantry regiment worth of troops.
3. My SC TFs achieved their primary operational goal of disrupting enemy unloading such that the TF containing this 650AV didn't finish unloading and such that other amphibious TFs didn't unload anything.
4. By my count he has at least as many other amphibious ships in 2 other TFs.

So, overall, I expect that he came for Attu with a force of about 1200 to 1300 AV, equivalent to roughly 4 divisions. 2 divisions wouldn't be nearly enough. With that said he didn't have 4 free divisions hanging around ( although it sounds like he has had to divert a division he was getting ready to commit to 2nd wave operations in the Aleutians to the southern China front where he is FT TFing in large combat formations ( about 1.5 divisions worth of troops ) ) and rather than give me the gift of more time ( which would have raised his force requirement to 8 divisions in another fortnight ) he went with what was available.

Personally I think his problem was in asking the wrong question in formulating his strategy. He seems to have asked which of my bases he need to take to cut off resupply to the Kuriles. I don't think that was the correct question. Instead I think he just needed to ask which bases of mine he needed to render irrelevant to cut off resupply. If he had done that he could have arrived a week ago with a slightly smaller force ( 900 AV or so ) and taken 3 unoccupied islands, using KB and his air force to retard the growth of any of my bases in the vicinity and cutting Attu Island out of my SLOCs --- thus cutting everything downstream of Attu off from supply ( namely the Aleutians ).

Waiting for the PP to buy out 4 divisions instead of going now with the odds and ends he had available would have been an even greater mistake. With the massive IJN naval superiority and IJAAF and IJNAF aerial superiority he could still easily pull this off, if he is willing to accept significant losses to his fleet and IJNAF formations. My guess is that he'll be less willing to lose 20% of his current fleet than I am willing to lose 80% of what is left to me ( although objectively those two loss rates will be fairly equal (although in favour of Japan ) in terms of total numbers and aren't an example of loss insensitivity, merely paying a necessary and small price given the strategic gain - the rescue of 3+ divisions of troops and priceless positional advantage ).

Anyways on to the next turn now.

As to the SS:
Well, in the last 3 days they sank 4 ships and bounced a torpedo off an IJN carrier. They are forcing his cripples to re-route northward to go home and that extra distance will ensure some will sink. Lastly they are hedging KB into the waters east and north of the Aleutians which gives me positional advantage should I wish to attempt a strike on KB - something I will probably do in 2 to 3 days time.

Most importantly though they are in the right place to form transport TFs and bring supplies into the Kuriles ( their primary mission ) once the IJn surface elements are no longer in the region.

His AV is climbing. I'd expect it to top off at about 600 to 700 even accounting for 50% of his squads being disabled in landing. That's enough that this might just work.

So what's the plan for tomorrow:
Well, tomorrow I take advantage of the stress in the Aleutians to dart in and land 900 AV + engineers at Ramree as well as beginning its buildup into a major aerial and fleet base. The Chindit Bde is on the way and I'm eyeing his exit routes from Burma, looking to see if a Bde-sized parachute-drop could accomplish something strategically worthwhile. Otherwise I'll just drop the Bde on Bassein as the tanks go ashore in a week's time. It looks like I should be able to get about 900 AV of armoured combat power ashore. I think that'll be enough to blast through Japanese infantry on the plains.

The USN will feed another BB TF into the fire around Attu and seek to pick off scattering enemy transport TFs with about 100 SBDs and 30 Avengers. The danger is they might hit KB instead in which case they'll die. If they can avoid hitting KB though they should cause alot of damage to enemy shipping.

Overall the Allies lost 170 planes to 90 Japanese planes, including 40+ Zeroes and another 20+ Vals. Most of my losses were SBDs - of which I have over 100 which is why I was willing to take the risk with them.

It still looks like a score draw in the Aleutians - which is a win for me - but at Ramree it is an unconditional victory. I've landed an additional 930 AV to make 1200 AV at Ramree + about 500 engineer equivalents. It will expand very rapidly now.

Tomorrow I send a cruiser TF into Rangoon harbour itself to create havoc among shipping unloading there which appears to be reinforcing this theatre.

I got a nice co-ordinated strike out of Attu and Adak, pity it wasted itself against KB instead of impaling all of those helpless xAPs and xAKs.

I didn't have any torpedoes available - hell, 6 days ago I had no airfields available ;-) - so the Avengers had to level bomb from 8,000 feet.

Current IJA forces at Attu. It looks to me like about 8 Regiment equivalents, which with 1 sunk on the way there would have made a 3 division assault force.

The danger is they might hit KB instead in which case they'll die. If they can avoid hitting KB though they should cause alot of damage to enemy shipping.

That turned out to be an uncomfortably accurate forecast. My own humble opinion is that what has been achieved in the Aleutians, while valuable, was not worth the losses -- but that's me. What is the victory point situation (or have you agreed to ignore auto-victory)?

I thought the operational plan was worth the effort. I am just amazed at the difference in effectiveness of the Japanese vs. American forces. Offensively and defensively the Japanese forces demonstrated a superiority that was able to deal out greater damages to the Americans than expected while preventing losses commensurate with the American forces committed to battle.

Based on the correlation of forces this was an overwhelming Japanese success and Allied failure if military losses are the only measure. Despite this the eventual fate of Attu, the geopgraphical objective, is still in question. Nemo definitely threw off the Japanese timetable, and he has created opportunities elsewhere in the war. So I'm not ready to write this off as a strategic defeat just yet.

Ok how about a straw poll. How do people think things are going?

I'll kick it off by giving my assessment.

1. Perception's a strange thing. I think my losses in the Aleutians are not at all lopsided - 1 BB, 1 CA, 1 CL, 1 CLAA and about 12 to 15 DDs in return for 1 IJN CA, 1 IJN CL and about 8 to 10 IJN DDs. In addition the IJN has lost 3 hugely precious DMS, 4 PBs and a few xAKs/xAPs as well as receiving a bomb through Akagi's deck. In the air I've lost about 300 planes in total, including today's losses and the IJN bombardments I had to allow early on and have destroyed somewhere between 200 and 250 of KB's planes ( including their pilots while most of mine have been saved ).

In terms of losses I think the IJN is doing a little better in surface naval action - which isn't surprising as I've been having to send in damaged ships which haven't had their April 42 upgrades. In the air I'm way ahead in terms of pilots and modern airframes insofar as I've lost far fewer pilots and fewer modern airframes ( quite a few of my losses were obsolescent types which wouldn't be on the front line if I had a choice ).

2. Operationally things are, IMO, going entirely my way. He's dancing to my tune operationally despite having a numerically and qualitatively superior force.

3. Strategically this is achieving every strategic goal I've set:
i) saving the Kuriles which gives me the ability to get at the Home Islands in 1943 without carrier support - a HUGELY important strategic coup.
ii) marooning IJA ground troops such that the IJN gets drawn into support operations during which I can attrit them
iii)forcing Damian to expend his strategic reserves to counter my moves instead of using them to create problems for me ( this is the same thing I'm doing in China )
iv) preventing the IJN from being able to concentrate its forces and crush the littoral campaign around Burma.
v) maintaining an open front in which I can continue to attrition his aerial, naval and ground forces effectively at a cost sustainable to me but unsustainable to him.

Really, from my point of view, tactically things are going as well as could be expected, operationally things are going well and strategically this is just a massive win.

Poodlebrain,

Ah, but losses are never the only measure. This operation has to be viewed in its strategic context to be valued properly and in that context I think it is a smashing Allied victory really as my strategic objectives are all being achieved. Also in terms of losses I just don't see what people are seeing as being so lopsided? The IJN has sunk a little more than I've sunk of them but not much more at all.

As to the effectiveness... Well, the American forces missed their upgrades in April 1942 and many missed the August upgrades and most were committed to combat with significant unrepaired damage. I just didn't have the time available to repair them before they were required. As to the IJN dealing greater damage than expected - I'm not so sure about that. I never expected more from the USN than disrupting the landings while taking more serious losses than the IJN suffered - which is pretty much what has happened. The USN was NEVER going to beat the IJN in night-time or daytime naval combat around Attu. It just didn't have the necessary upgrades or crew experience.

As I said, perspectives are interesting though. My thinking has shifted, after the last day, to going over to the offensive in the Aleutians and beginning to focus on supporting the Kuriles since I felt things were going so well in the Aleutians. Sure the Japanese have naval and aerial superiority but that isn't going to stop me from doing what I want to do in that theatre. I also can airbridge in half a regiment a day to Attu anytime I want to. I just amn't doing it yet since I don't want Damian to decide it is hopeless and pull all those troops out. I want them to be marooned there so he has to mount another major operation to take them off the island.

Funny how people see things differently. I think a lot of this has to do with excessive sensitivity to losses and not comparing the losses to the strategic gains being made. I just don't see how any player could turn down losing a few BBs and 400 or 500 airplanes whilst dishing out about 75% of that damage to the Japanese PLUS maintaining two footholds in the Kuriles as anything other than a major strategic victory. Those footholds in the Kuriles will take a year to 18 months off the game and that will save multiples of 400 to 500 planes and multiples of the number of ships I've lost in the past few days.

Each to their own though, I amn't deriding anyone's viewpoints or calculus. I'm just always surprised how large losses in a short period of time ( although be no means one-sided losses ) keep being viewed as bad while much, much larger losses over a longer period of time, incurred because of the foregoing of high loss, phased operations are accepted as somehow preferable or "better". It just mystifies me.

I think it will take a major commitment of manpower and material for the Japanese to pull their chestnuts out of the fire to achieve a strategic victory in the Aleutians, and I doubt they will make the commitment because they can't afford to ignore other threats. I did not want to speculate about future events, and I tried to keep my comments to current events. I believe I did acknowledge that control of the geography was the critical strategic element and not the losses. I honestly expected the Japanese would suffer greater losses than they did given the forces you had available, and the way in which you forced exposure of the Japanese forces.

poodlebrain,

Feel free to speculate. Hopefully readers enjoy reading the AAR. For me, the speculations and discussions sparked within it are what I enjoy. So, speculation's welcome.

In my experience in 1942 the Japanese tend to run rampant even if a numerical accounting of forces would suggest otherwise. So, a well-organised USN TF with 4 BBs, a few CAs and a half-dozen DDs is likely to be steamrollered by an equivalent IJN TF and likely to be very roughly handled by even an IJN CA or DD/torpedo attack TF.

Add in the fact that I had to engage the IJN at night to avoid KB sinking my ships before they could get into main gun range AND the fact that I had to engage them when moonlight was 78%+ ( which minimised the disadvantage to the IJN of fighting at night since ) and that my ships, because of their damage, were carrying all sorts of negative spotting and visibility bonuses and, really, it was never likely that the USN would actually achieve much attritionally.

That's why, if you look back, I never expected much from the USN's commitment in terms of sinking IJN surface combatants. I only ever saw their commitment as disrupting the amphibious operations and spreading it over time such that I'd be able to accurately assess whether and/or how much I needed to fly in using the airbridge to have Attu hold. The plan always recognised that the USN couldn't beat or even draw with the IJN. The plan was all about how to accept those tactical losses but have them mean something operationally and strategically.

In 1942 Allied surface combatants will suffer excessively in return for inflicting lower casualties UNLESS:
1) the USN upgrades religiously
2) takes care to create properly balanced TFs ( something most don't do and which I didn't have the luxury of doing during this operation )
3) commits only undamaged shipping - this is particularly crucial at night
4) the US can fight night-time actions under the worst possible visibility conditions - since visibility impacts both sides equally it imposes a greater relative reduction on night-time efficiency on the side which is most effective at night, namely the Japanese.

You'll note that night-time visibility conditions were worse on the 2nd night ( even though the raw % moonlight was superior ) and that USN combat results were far better on the 2nd night than the 1st even though the combat TF on the first night contained my most upgraded ( radar etc ) ships.

I've noted that people either fail to account for this at night OR seek to commit the USN to night-time combat only when visibility is best in the belief that this gives the USN the best chance. This is precisely the opposite of what they should do given a systems analysis of night-time combat a la Lanchester which clearly shows that any improvement in USN performance will result in a greater baseline and adjusted performance by the IJN such that losses will increase logarithmically as damage inflicted decreases logarithmically the more "favourable" sighting conditions are for the USN.

In any case I was unfortunate that on the 1st day when my premier combat assets went in that the weather was good and visibility was good at night - leading to predictably inferior outcomes - while on the second day the poorer night-time conditions allowed far weaker USN elements to inflict far greater losses on the IJN. Those are the vagaries of weather within the game. All you can do is set things up as best you can and recognise that chance will, over time, reward that but may, from time to time, choose to kick you in the groin irrespective of what you do

I think its interesting though insofar as it highlights the perverse relationship between favourable conditions and favourable outcomes and how unfavourable conditions can often benefit the weaker side through lessening the relative dyscorrelation of forces. You rarely see people playing that side of the odds here, there's far more ( too much IMO ) focus on finding the most favourable conditions for one's own side as opposed to also looking for the least favourable for the other side - these are not necessarily one and the same.

Ramree:

So, the use of the Eastern Fleet Naval HQ with 285 Naval Support to facilitate amphibious offloading at Ramree has allowed me to land 900+ AV and 500+ engineer equivalents + commensurate supporting elements in a single night. I'll have to withstand a couple of days of aerial assault with insufficient numbers of my own fighters to prevent leakers but, overall, losses should be relatively light - especially as I plan to let the IJN SC elements close their trap on empty air. I should explain, mini-KB is off the coast and visible in the picture below, just 2 hexes below my subs is a major IJN SC TF containing several BBs including, IMO, 1 to 2 Yamato class BBs. At Rangoon there are several IJN TFs unloading troops and supplies etc.

Tomorrow I intend to send a strong cruiser TF into Rangoon harbour itself to engage the IJN TFs there as they unload. I want to make Damian worry about what I plan to do to him in this region and a raid into the harbour itself bypassing his carriers and surface combatants should do the job. Even if it is intercepted by his surface combatants there's a good chance I can strip escorts away through this action and that'll help even the odds when his BBs face mine.

I'm going to continue loading armoured units and transporting them to Akyab while infantry units are moved to Ramree. In the end I'll bring approximately 2100 AV of infantry in to Ramree and have 900 AV of armour at Akyab. I'll then open up the 2nd phase of the littoral campaign.

The question I need to answer now is how best to use the Chindits. I have about 80 transports available for them but I don't believe that that will suffice to let them take even a lightly defended base. This is a pity since I'd quite like to cut his forces in Burma off using paradrops on his bases in northern Thailand/southern Burma. Ah well, c'est la guerre.

For those wondering: Yes, there's supply spoilage. I'm not bothered as I am delivering an additional 90,000 tons of supplies and will only have to tolerate the spoilage until such time as I can walk 40,000 men across the river and into coastal Burma. At that point spoilage should, largely, stop... it will reduce, in the meantime, as I expand the airfield's capacity, With 510 Engineer equivalents I can expect it to be a Level 5 airfield within the week - even in the face of bombing when I remove my fighters, which I'll do in a day or two.

Nemo, your narrative shows first South Dakota taking mortal damage and later North Carolina. After each, you state that the BB was doomed or sank. Did you lose one BB or two?

As for battle range and effectiveness, in 1941-42 while US torpedoes are junk, close range combat favours the Japanese and their Long Lances. Further out, say 8,000 yards, the Japanese tend to miss much more often with those deadly LLs; seeing a shadow at night is one thing and estimating its direction or travel, speed and exact range is another. Neither side hits very effectively at these night ranges but at least the USN is spared the devastation of the torps in most cases.

By 1943 the USN have gained the most important factor in night battles - experience, and coupled with radar fire control they will dominate most battles. British ships, especially cruisers and DDs, come with a good deal of experience and can hold their own in any fight on equal terms with the IJN, even in 1942.

Having said all that, if attrition by close-in knife fight is your goal, you are getting what you wanted!
