Couldn't have two better leaders for our notes - Lady Thatcher and Sir Winston Churchill - simply the best in fact (as Tina Turner would say).

In agreement with you on the caveat of 80 years ago, he would probably be a right nightmare now just like the current bunch of jokers along with the opposition and wannabes.

It's from an early 70's cartoon that I used to watch when I was a kid called "The Adventures of Sir Prancelot" http://www.thechestnut.com/prance/sir-prancelot-2.htm Count Otto the Blot, or "Blotto" as he was commonly known, is a "nasty piece of work" and the bad guy in some of the shows. My avatar is also the character from the show.

A ytube snippet where he is introduced. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cuRY7rZyje0

Seemed like a good name as I tend to play with a drink in my hand.

Likewise. Actually, for the benefit of non-Brits, the only other politician deemed as worthy to date was the Duke of Wellington and considering he was actually a pretty lousy politician I think we can safely assume it was for his earlier military achievements

Only two that are worse? Come now wodin you exhibit a frightening lack of imagination: Balls, Milliband, Cable, Clegg - god, the list is long and depressing.....

Okay to all the British out there.

There is a new £5, £10, £20 and £50 note about to be printed. Which person would you have on each and a couple of lines on why? HM Queen Elizabeth obviously keeps here place on one side so its just about who appears opposite.

I am not British but I nominate four men anyway. I would appreciate if anyone with more knowledge than me suggested some other names. Preferably female.

Since my nominees are all pretty famous I do not write down any motivation. If there is any question on why I suggested the names I did I am willing to answer them.

Alexander Graham Bell
Isaac Newton
Charles Darwin
Isambard Kingdom Brunel

To be honest I've no idea..but those have and so has Florence Nightingale..All the big names would have appeared by now..so you have to look for more obscure Brits.

Bank of England may have something on their website..I know the public suggest names and they then choose one.

I nominate Warspite 1 & Wodin. For us forum members it should be clear that between the two of them they pretty much know everything.

+2 from me! Two of the best. When history is written they will get their well deserved honored place.

To answer a different question, I'd put the Otto von Blot character on the 50 pound note. He does look like a union boss, eh?

My choice would be

Charles Darwin : He established that all species of life have descended over time from common ancestors, and proposed the scientific theory that this branching pattern of evolution resulted from a process that he called natural selection, in which the struggle for existence has a similar effect to the artificial selection involved in selective breeding. So ended the age of religion.

Tim Berners-Lee. The inventor of the World Wide Web. So ended the age of the High Street shop.

Alan Turing. The inventor of the computer. So ended to Age of face to face socialisation.

Rosalind Franklin. Work was crucial in the discovery of the DNA double helix.... Sufferer of sexism , trashed by Watson.

Runners up...

Isambard Kingdom Brunel
Frank Whittle
Peter Higgs
Alexander Graham Bell
Isaac Newton

Churchill was a Great British leader but I feel that perhaps we should be looking to honour people who have made great contributions in other walks of life.

It was done by the same people, Captain Pugwash was also brilliant they also did Mary Mungo and Midge.

Noteworthy Britons that are not politicians (but people of hope and creation) even if they have been on a note in the past they can still make a re-appearance.

Isambard Kingdom Brunel
Charles Darwin
William Dampier
Elizabath garrett Anderson
Emmeline Pankhurst
Stephen Hawking
Josiah Wedgwood
Wat Tyler
Mary Shelley
Tim Berners-Lee
Cadbury brothers
Ada Lovelace
Joseph Mallord William Turner

The only real politician worth considering in my mind would be William Wilberforce

Wilberforce was a driving force in the abolition of slavery. And, championed the importance of religion, morality and education.

+1 from here!
He espouses the values of my home State of Pennsylvania. At least when it was founded. Not so much now.

Speaking about Brits that were influential to our American friends and the rest of the world I would further also like to nominate Thomas Paine to my list.
