When you set your planes for naval search, you can't dictate where they search?

If you send a bomber on a recon mission and you target an empty island at the peak range, will the bomber spot a enemy fleet in the middle ground?

If you have a squad of B17's at an airfield, how can you split one or two planes off just for long range naval searches, but keep the rest for bombing missions?

Thanks.

Nope. They generally search in a "reasonable arc". If you're lauching PBYs from Cairns, they're not evenly spreading out over a 360-degree arc, as there won't be many IJN ships in the desert to the west. But no, you can't precicely dictate WHERE they seach, you just have to trust them to do their job I guess.

Not likely would be my guess, altho I can't say for sure. Be aware that you don't need THAT many planes to recon an enemy base. You can set the unit's mission to Recon, but leave 70% on Naval Search, and you end up with probably 2 or 3 planes on recon, and the rest seaching in "reasonable arcs".

You set the primary mission to naval or airfield or port attack, and then just below that, set the Naval Search percentage to say 20%. 20% will look for ships, while the other 80% will bomb them (or the AF or port) given the opportunity.

So you can't send one of the B-17's on a long range search, while you rest the remaining crews in that squad?

Yes, in that case, you'd set the primary mission to Naval Search, but then only set the percenage below to say 20%. In that case, the only 20% of your crews will be out searching, the rest will be back in the O-club.

Don't forget that there's a "primary" mission and then the percent indicator for the Naval Search below.

Whatever %age you want to go on searches set that percentage. The rest will attempt the primary mission (AF attack, Port attack, whatever).

The exception is Naval Attack, where there's also a secondary mission assigned. First set %age of aircaft to naval search that you want. Then if your primary mission is Naval Attack, it will prompt you for a secondary mission (in case no ships are spotted). Their seconday mission might be to attack an AF that you designate.

So for example. You have 4 squadrons.

Sqdn #1 Primary Mission : Naval Attack; Secondary Misison Rest; NavSearch = 10%
10% of these AC will look for enemy ships, 90% will bomb any ships spotted, if none spotted, they sit at the AF.

Sqdn #2 Primary Mission : Naval Attack; Secondary Misison Port Attack; NavSearch = 50%
50% of these AC will look for enemy ships, 50% will bomb any ships spotted, if none spotted, they'll bomb the enemy port.

Sqdn #3 Primary Mission : AF Attack; NavSearch = 30%
30% of these AC will look for enemy ships, 70% will bomb enemy AF.

Sqdn #4 Primary Mission : Naval Search; NavSearch = 60%
60% of these AC will look for enemy ships, 40% will sit at the AF.

Hope this helps. Time for sleep...

Sure you can, Naval Search mission, intensity 10 %. 12 planes, only one will fly, while rest sit around turned up ammo box and play 5 card draw.
