I had 4 mostly idle construction ships. The AI adviser kept wanting to build 6 more :) I have used to play with automated constructors, but have switched to manual in order to get better defense setups, and also get more of a feel with what is actually needed. If you got a number of colonies for luxuries, I figure you can get pretty far with 8-10 mines. Fuel sources excluded.

Hm, discussing this game in the past tense. A bad sign.
